Unless you're one of...THOSE people, you probably dig anime with ridiculously oversized metal mechanoids. But what's YOUR favorite aspect of these shows?

One of my personal favorites is the absolutely insane and often nonsensical names for the robots themselves. Not only do the names sound like someone just pulled it out of their behind when the military committee was trying to come up with something other than a random designation number, they just SOUND bad-ass in their incomprehensible glory.

That's one of the aspect I love about Macross. All of the human mecha have names that you could actually see real-life military forces using.

I'd generally have to say that my favorite things about giant robots are their often ridiculously powered weapons.

I'm not into mecha; what does your "THOSE people" suppose to mean?

Just sarcasm. I wasn't trying to be a jerk to people who don't like the stuff.

Don't most names for military equipment and projects sound like that? Razz

Unfortunately, the way you wrote your thread opener was quite insulting to those who were not into giant robots.

Well, sooorrrryyyyy. I wasn't trying to start any drama. -_-

Back on topic! I love the fact that these things would be impractical due to their design (a bipedal battle suit that stands upright like a human? What do you do if it falls over, eh?), but somehow, in cartoon world, they move around like frickin' NINJAS.

I really just like the fact that giant mechs often lead to so good action. I also like to see how ever giant robot anime has a different idea of how the mechs would look, act, fight, and be used. There are huge differences in Gigantor, Gundam, Evangelion, Gurren Lagann, ext. Some show the mechs as already being a major part of the military and being high quality (like in some of the Gundams) while others present them as being imperfect machines that are still being tested (Evangelion). And then of course there's the flat out crazy (Gurren Lagann). There's allot to like when it comes to giant robots.

I like the ability to get away with fighting between human shaped objects in manners that would tend to get rated, censored or just not shown were the same fight to be done with actual humans - impalations, limbs torn off, heads crushed etc. Admittedly that can be done with human sized robots as well, but mecha give you that while still having human character pilots at risk, increasing the tension.

I also like stuff that reminds me of what it was like first watching Transformers as a child in the 80's, so anything where giant robots can change in planes or combine to become a bigger robot sets off my inner child, regardless of if it's actually any good or not.

In for Tengen Toppa Gurren-lagann.

Personally, giant robots amuse me only if they are [expletive] huge. A gigantic mech standing on a galaxy is what I'm talking about here, TTGL is the largest of the large mechs in any animu out there...PROVE ME WRONG.

Giant robots with axes are cool, whether they're Zakus or Getters.

I've always liked biomecha as well. The animation of the Eva units in Evangelion looks really unique.

I don't really have a preference in terms of design when it comes to super robots vs real robots, but I tend to prefer super robot shows because they are usually more fun, hah. Masami Obari shows are my guilty pleasure...

I'm generally not a mecha fan, but I think I get tired of looped transformation sequences and hearing pilots scream out their attacks before performing them. Maybe I just haven't seen any "good" mecha shows.

I've seen shows like Aquarion Age, Gravion, Robotech S1, Big O. There's one more where a 16 year old girl marries some guy that saves her, and her mother works for the mech company the guy does, but then the guy's love from earlier comes back to life and they all fight together.

I like Gurren Lagann and Diebuster, but Gainax could make a show about grass growing and i'd probably love it.

Show with a little bit of mecha, like Full Metal Panic are alright, but as soon as i see mecha every episode.

Another problem is a lot of mecha shows seem to be from the older catalog (pre/early 90's) and I don't like the style from that time as a whole.

Well for one I'm a gainax fangirl....
Eva is one of the greatest thing ever IMO and I grew up watching gundam on toonami so it's kind of like a tradition for me. Giant robot anime comes out, I watch it. I even watched Zegapain but quickly found out that the theme song was it's best quality. Plus more recent pilots tend to be great characters like kamina or renton... or rei.

The mecha genre did kind of in my eyes define my view of anime when I was younger. I think this is especially true of people who dont know anime very well in western countries. It may also be this genre therefore that people enter into first when they watch anime for the first time. . Of course this much may be true for shows like pokemon and digimon as well. Even those shows were mistaken for normal cartoons rather than japanese anime by many young children however.
