Is it possible for an anime fan to develop crushes on anime characters?

There are lots of people that I have met on-line who say they have had crushes on anime characters (crushes as defined in the "puppy love" catagory). I don't know about any of you guys, but I find it a little odd for someone to have any sort of emotional attachment to a drawing or 2-dimensional character. Though seeing as I have not yet experienced such a feeling, it probably isn't fair for me to be the judge of that.

Is it possible? I say yes it is. I mean, there are blow-up dolls of Anime characters, and body pillows to boot. And of course, there was the case of the Japanese man who wanted permission to "marry" an Anime character.

Some people need to get a life. And some people need to be locked away. Of course, they might already be "locked away" in their apartments, but I was thinking more along the lines of getting professional help.

I've most certainly had a few short term crushes on video game characters when I was younger (and just Portal as a game), but not on anime characters. They usually would break any potential for any sort of "crush" the instant they open their mouths (which was why I tended to like game characters who either don't speak, or lack a voice over)

Sure, I make paper model figurines of some game characters (have yet to for any anime), but I do it because I think they look cool and not b ecause I nearly worship the said character. That just reminded me of Welcome to the NHK with Yamazaki's odd mega crush on Pururin ("They've got a Pururin body pillow!"). He also said that he'd starve for Pururin and he played her theme song 24/7 for months on end. I think that's creepy enough in an anime, but for someone to do that in real life (which is apparantly true) would just freak me out to go anywhere beyond a joke.

Its possible to become attached to characters and want them to be happy and stuff like that. Even think they are cute and your ideal type, which would likely be a unrealistic fantasy guy or girl you'd never find.

But an actual true crush sounds rather strange. I really like Tamaki and think of him as my ideal guy (fantasy) He's really cute. But I dont have a crush. I want him with Haruhi. spoiler[Lucky for me she likes him back! Yay!] Want my boy to be happy.

I have seen fangirls go overboard and hate the main character because she likes the guy..I dont know if they are serious but it creeps me out. Laughing

Well, it's true that there are otaku out there that go beyond their normal limits of infatuation. I've seen a documentary once where I man keeps an entire harem of life-size anime dolls in his apartment (apparently because real women were hard to deal with).

Would you say the same thing about a crush that may be more subtler than that, maybe just a mild emotional attachment?

I can do you one better...I've come across a few people who are convinced that a certain character is real and in love with them. Gives me the willies just thinking about it. If there were ever the equivalent to a flashing neon sign over someone's head yelling, "I need professional help!", I imagine that's what it would look like.

I once remember seeing a freeware dating sim where you have to form a relationship with Eva's Misato, in spite of her being purely fictional even within the game.
Needless to say, I gave it a miss.

Of course you can get crushes, that's what every guy in a shojo manga is there for, to keep the ladies interested Wink It's no different to a regular novel. But that's nowhere near the same thing as creepy Japanese otaku who have sex with character dolls.

When Digimon fist came out I had a crush on Yamato (Matt) durring season 1. Of course I was only 13 at the time. These days I just like it when my favorit character, whether they be boy or girl, gets to be with the one they love.

Sure.... going off the deep end and acting as if it were a real person is pretty weird in my opinion. But it's possible to be attracted to the idea of a character, or find the art visually appealing. Obviously people do, why else are bishounen so popular?

I feel I should point out that there is an earlier thread raising this same issue: Crush on an anime boy or girl?

You may be able to find some interesting viewpoints in that thread.

Of course you can! It's called "Having an unhealthy fantasy about an animated character you jerk off to!" When you go this far, you find yourself in somewhat of an awkward situation, and you really should start talking to actual living people if this is the case.

Then again, who says it's so unhealthy? Personally I think having a stalkery crush on some celebrity you'll never meet is pretty damn weird... at least having a crush on an anime character is pure fantasy and isn't really objectifying anyone.

It's perfectly healthy to use your imagination and have fantasies I think. They allow us to escape the pressures of every day life once in a while....and allow us to self reflect and work out issues in a safe environment. The point that it becomes unhealthy is when you become obsessive and begin to lose sight of reality. Characters aren't real, they're just ideas and artwork... but of course artwork can be stimulating to look at and can inspire real emotions. Good art is intended to make you feel something, after all.

It doesn't mean you want to ditch your girlfriend or stop hanging out with real people. Besides...I think most of the fangirls and boys that you see know the difference between reality and fantasy. They just think the character design is cute. That's it. People who become obsessive to the point they avoid real people or buy dolls to sleep with are an extreme case... they have real emotional issues, which don't necessarily have anything to do with anime.

One word: Fangirls.

That sums it up quite nicely. That's the reason I got over my 'childhood crush' on an anime character (I was 7 years old back then, so meh). Seeing how these airheads fight over a fictional character that is NOT of their property makes me fantastically SICK. My worst enemy is the worst Wakabayashi Genzo fangirl in Latin America. Evil or Very Mad

An atraction to one is definitely possible. I mean there are several anime I've watched which have had girls that make me think "If she was real, I'd definitely go after her" and several hantai characters that succeeded in making me want them sexually. However, I'd say anything beyond that is impossible considering they're fictional and all. There's a barrier between my sense of reality and fiction that's impossible to cross.
