I'm assuming this is a way of finding out which VA's have international appeal & thus maybe making a title more valuable in other markets by using those VA's.

The impression that I got from the article is that non-Japanese fans will be picking their favorite Japanese seiyuu. If that's the case then you seem to have it backwards. I like the idea myself, as I keep track of the seiyuu I'm hearing and certainly have my favorites. And as CCSYueh said it could also serve as market research as to what non-Japanese fans like. |

Seriously though, i'm just a bit confused, are we voting for Japanese voice actors and/or English dub actors and/or foreign ones as well? |

minakichan does make a somewhat interesting point, although I, myself could easily misinterpret what he/she wrote and maybe it is just flamebait. But wouldn't the majority of fans simply not have enough proficiency in the Japanese language to enable them to judge a quality seiyu from the garbage that is out there? Considering the fact I've seen a lot of anime, the only seiyu I've ever disliked was the lead voice actress in Arjuna. As it has been said though, it will be interesting and I will be casting a truly bias vote. |

You are over analyzing it. The only thing that matters is what rubs you the right way. It doesn't matter if you can't understand em, its all about whose voice makes you 'wow I think that fits really well'. So its more of a feeling contest a.k.a swooning, rather than intellectually debating who you think is the best. Hope shinigami-sama's VA is in the contest, and mamiko noto, lelouch va, etc.. ^^ Argh 3 more days! |

It's actually quite the interesting question... I dunno how many hard core Japanese Otaku would actually import an English dub of a DVD just to hear an American take on what is a native property to them. I suppose an analog would be importing Southpark to Japan and watching it with a Japanese subtitle... but do they really care about Cartman?
The interesting thing in being curious about how foreign fans react to seiyuu is deciding exactly what we are getting out of listening to something in such a different language. I watch things subbed because so often the tone and sound of the seiyuu matches well with everything else about the character onscreen... dubs seem to be quite uneven in this respect, especially for older works. Not to mention when they have to change the dub wording so much for the lip sync that the idea of the conversation is changed, and sometimes simply lost. I guess we are all prolly familiar with the question. It is interesting to me that the originators of the anime might be in some way curious about how we as gaijin percieve their work. It may just be a personality/popularity contest, but there may be more to it than that. I would have to wonder about the timelag issue though. If the contest is about what a seiyuu has done recently, we likely don't have much access to that. We may well be looking at things several years old, thet they have already moved on from. For example, I may [and do] adore Sayaka Ohara's Yuuko from -Holic but I am not looking at Kei which is the current work... I'll be sure to vote though, however they allow us to do so. |

Realistically a good actor is a good actor whatever the language. THe only thing one may not get exactly is the specific wording where the emphasis is made. I mean, I assume the Japanese audience is STILL impressed with Jack Nicholson even though he's probably dubbed when they see him.
Look at music. People around the world can enjoy the emotion carried by the music & the sound of the singer's voice. For my money Koyasu is incredible. He seems to just knock it out effortlessly. Daisuke Gori always sounds damned funny whether I understand a word that he's saying or not. Tanaka was damned evil as kid Krillin & Luffy has his moments & he's just joyously fun to listen to. (yes, I do know it's a gal voicing him) It's really not all that hard to judge a foreign performance. In fact, I get so busy listening to the cadence of the voices, I often realize I haven't been reading the subtitles & have to go back. |
