Anime News Network, you're very welcome. We break incoming news on a somewhat irregular frequency and I thought everyone might be interested in hearing that Kousuke Fujishima, anime and manga creator of one of the best manga series of all time, was in the stages of creating a new manga series.

From what I'm hearing, Ah My Goddess isn't ending anytime soon. This next week celebrates the 20th Anniversary of the manga series and there's some huge announcement regarding the future of the series coming in the next week as well.
From what my sources are telling me, that there may be some announcement regarding the future of the television series, possibly involving AMG in either a new series of OVA's, a new movie (which is unlikely) or a new season of Ah My Goddess. I have to tell you that previously, it was rumored that Gohda-san and Hidenori-san wanted some time off from the television series since they had produced two seasons worth of episodes nearly back to back and that with Hidenori-san working on the new Evangelion movies that he wanted to wait until the movies were finished. However, with the Evangelion movies taking two years to complete and get to theaters with each movie, I think that Fujishima-san, Kodansha and TBS are wanting to put another season into production since Gohda-san hasn't really been working on anything recently ... I'll do my best and keep everyone updated as the information being supplied by my contacts are coming from none other than the members on my website who have inside information. Also, from what I heard, that Fujishima-san has placed a temporary mangka over the duties for the artwork for Megami-sama, which has a lot of manga fans up-ended. My guess is that he's going to start the new series off and then probably pass on the art-chores to another Manga-ka and that they may be testing the new artist on Ah My Goddess for the next few chapters. |

I'll be the minority here, but I just wish Fujishima would stop drawing. OMG has become terrible since ages, both in drawing quaility and in story quality. I dropped it long ago, since it showed his total inability in ending something that should have completed years ago.

If you can't something nice don't say anything at all ...
While, it's true that the manga series has been going on forever, it's a cash cow for Kodansha. The manga series as well as the anime series and all of its merchandise generate a lot of money in revenue for Fujishima-san and Kodansha and it was Kodansha's insistance that they wanted Fujishima to keep the series going through the 20th anniversary celebration. IN addition, Ah My Goddess is Kodansha's flagship series for their company as well as for the Afternoon publication and they aren't going to want to end it until they can replace it with an equally great series. Recently, Fujishima-san had cut back on the number of chapters from 12 per year to nine per year ... With the manga series slowly approaching its 250th chapter, 241 was just recently released, don't look for it to end anytime soon. Oh, and his artwork is better than ever and you can't judge the sometimes awful translations committed by Dark Horse Comics. Ever since Studio Proteus sold out to Dark Horse Comics, the translation for the series has been awful, committing new translations to the earlier works done by Toren Smith. It's just sad that Toren Smith sold out ... |

I'm no basing my ideas on the US version . I'm basing them on the Italian adaptation, that has been going on far longer than Dark Horse version. But the lack of backgrounds isn't a figment of my imagination, and the same can be said for the now stale Keichi and Belldandy characterization, among the others.
Perhaps this manga will be a fresh start, but I doubt it. |

gack, I've heard aboutj the Iltalian and German adaptions ... you have toi realize that the manga adaptions in the various countries they are licensed to for distribution are translated in a way that makes sense to the manga fans living in those countries.
90% of the time, the manga translations are edited so that it makes to sense to those reading the series in their own language ... for the English market, I know a lot of references relating to culture and whatnot in Japan are often edited out so that they amke sense to westerners. I suspect it's the same for the French, Spanish, Italian and German translations as well. |

Not in OMG case. The trend is to leave all the references, including honorifics (something I hate, but I digress). So I experienced the manga near to the original (something is lost in the translation no matter what) as far as adaptation. And this isn't related at all to the topic at hand.

Why is it unlikely? I loved the OMG movie so incredibly much, it pains me that there will never be a sequel, everything was tied up and all, but still with talented writers like there are I'm certain more stories could come from it. I've watched that movie like 10 times and I love it each and every time, massively quality production. As for this main news, it's incredibly exciting to hear and I sincerely hope Dark Horse will license it and publish it in very good time to its Japanese tankoubon release. It might end up going to Del Rey though, with their ties with Kadokawa, or even the newly established Kadokawa USA might publish it directly.... Who knows, I just want to read this ASAP!!! |

I'm just going to pretend I never read that and enjoy the series, gah sometimes I hate reading so much stuff because I find out things I'd be happier being ignorant about. I'm sure the translation will suffice anyway... I'm just starting to collect the second editions. |

First, I never said that there would never be a movie, but any such movie sequel would be more in lines with the original OVA/Movie Timeline.
Finally, for the manga series, I think to completely re-translate the original manga releases instead of using the Toren Smith translations is a dishonor to the work that Studio Proteus did on the series. Also, my main issue is that Dark Horse oftentimes has edited certain dialogue, so that it would make sense to American readers. This is just a great disservice to fans who have always enjoyed their manga but who want an authentic translation done. I think after the butcher job that was committed when Nausicaa of the Valley of the Valley of Wind was brought into the United States with the horrible dubbing, the editing and the badly retitled movie to Warrior of the Wind, that American companies who license Japanese anime or manga would be careful what they edit ... and how they translate. I never said I didn't enjoy the new releases, I have them all, I just think they could do a better job of it. Just look at OMG Volume 21, where Peorth is speaking in French and that Dark Horse editors didn't even have a clue and include a translation guide in the same volume. Peorth doesn't even speak French in the original Japanese version. |
