Is there such a thing as a Maho Shonen series?

Yes. Check out Matantei Loki Ragnarok. It's a show about the Norse god Loki, banished to earth in the form of a little boy. He has the cardcaptor staff going, with music and everything.

Ultra Maniac is about the closest thing to "mahou shounen" I've ever seen.

I suppose Shaoran Li in Cardcaptor Sakura might count as "mahou shounen", since he does have a rather elaborate costume.

Also, maybe "Rumiya" in Magical Girl Pretty Sammy/Magical Project S, but that's a "mahou shoujo" spoof show.

I used to think Kyosuke Kasuga in Kimagure Orange Road counted, but he doesn't have a costume and his powers are more "paranormal" than "magical", and, while he has used his powers to save the day in emergencies, he's never fought against an arch-villain.

Saint Seiya (Knights of the Zodiac) might count as a mahou shonen.
