I was flipping through Play Magazine and they had reviews for this anime called Ex-Driver. It looked pretty cool (Especially this one screen shot where it is one of the chicks from the anime driving a Impreza 22B). Now my question is: Is it any good? Has anyone seen a fan sub of this or purchased the first DVD?

I almost reviewed that Anime, and generally I agreed very much with the review we did post, but I have a few points I'd like to highlight.

I was very dissapointed when the girls turned out to be High School girls, and the introduction of the boy. The show would have been much better (and more believable imho) if they had used 20 somethings as main characters... But instead we get another highschool fantasy Anime.

Regarding the real cars they drive. The stuff they say the show is very realistic. At one point one of the characters gives dissertation on different drifting techniques and what not... very well researched.

On the other hand, the animation of the driving scenes is very unrealistic. You have scenes of cars supposedly drifting through corners, but the cars momentum is more stop and go, as if they had slowed down, turned then sped up instead of drifting.

And then we get to the actual design of the AI cars and what they have to do to stop them when they go crazy... ridiculously stupid.

I actually liked the car animation in eX-Driver. Tempest of course has a much better eye for realism than I do in that department, and I agree that the animation is herky-jerky in places. But cars are VERY tricky to animate at all (at least by hand), so I'm impressed that they got it to look as good as they did.

Of course, I really can't recommend anything else about the show... Razz

BTW, I heard they actually made an eX-Driver movie?!? What's up with that??

Slim, from what I seen in th snapshots of it, the auto scenes did look good (They should of done that for Intial D, although raygal said the CG ain't bad as the show progresses).
But as far as the other content, When I was reading the plot synopsis and they said 12-year-old hot-rodder, I was like "Oh dear...". I totally agreew with Temptest, they should have used 20 somethings at least.
Well thanks again everyone, you saved me 30 bucks

We should probably have more word of mouth discussions n anime, video games, etc. to see what's good out there (because personally, I do not trust Animerica or any of those other mag reviews).

well, I thought it was alright. I'm not into going indepth with anime, I just love to see stuff explode and people die, and I found eX-Driver to be kinda fun. Yes it is kinda stupid, but it's worth a laugh. I wouldn't buy it, in fact I borrowed it from a friend who did, but it was ok.

Overall, I'd say, it's worth a rent, but not $30.
