It was not pointed out, that the novel is actually the fifth one. I don't like this idea of messing with the order of the books, which IMO is similar with Tokyopop's tampering of Kino's chapters. While I'm getting this, I also highly doubt this will boost the sales of the overall series.

I actually won't be buying this specifically because of the change in printing dimensions. At least, not until Seven Sea's re-releases the original three novels in the new format if they ever do. I am interested in reading though so I guess I'll check it out at the book store or the library.

From what I know Seven Seas will be releasing the first three novels in the format.
But their original printing will become a sort'of collector's item

I hope the novels have some sort of coherent plot, because the anime was all over the shop and pointless to me.

Boogiepop at Dawn was actually the sixth novel released, but chronologically, the book takes place first.

Ximpalullaorg, your comparison to what Tokyopop did with the first Kino novel is completely unfounded. None of the Japanese editions of Boogiepop ever carried volume numbers on them to begin with, so the reading order is really up to interpretation much like the Narnia books.

For "Boogiepop at Dawn," we opted to not put a volume number on the book at all so that it would stand alone. Since it's the origin story and the one book that Boogiepop fans have really been wanting to read for years, and it made for a great way to reintroduce the franchise.

As for why we chose to release "Boogiepop at Dawn" before "Boogiepop in the Mirror" and "Boogiepop Overdrive," it's really because the book's content made for a stronger seller (i.e. Mirror doesn't even feature much of the core cast at all, and Overdrive is like a Godzilla movie--complete with the American Godzilla!). You have to put your best foot forward and make sure that the books you put out instantly grab people or else no one will buy the later books.

We had plans to rerelease the first Boogiepop books as part of our Light Novel line, but we learned that our license was only for three years and we opted not to renew. So a rerelease is unlikely.

I've been waiting on this and will be buying it in the next week. I just wish they could come out a bit quicker. As far as book size, they can make it what ever size and shape they want as long as they keep releasing them and at a reasonable enough price.

Nice spin. However, Kadono published it as sixth. Therefore, he didn't want people to understand the history of Boogiepop till then. The impression I get is this was done because the general public couldn't understand a non-linear story. This is a book, not a manga. Publishing it messing with the order is something I consider highly questionable, and I don't think it'll help sales much (I bought it, but I won't read it till I get the other novels, to read it in the proper order).

Business decision, I see. Again though, there's no way to see it'll sell, and I personally think, despite liking it, that the general public will simply skip it again.

I thought the objection that the book looks out of place on a book shelf is a bit questionable since one look at my bookshelf provides a glimpse of books with all kinds of different sizes. So what exactly are people expecting, that all books forever will have the exact same dimensions?

Boogiepop at Dawn isn't actually as stand-alone as the reviewer claims, since without the first book the reader can't understand the sections with Echoes, without the fifth book the reader can't understand the references to the Piper and the other creature (I don't have my copy with me so I can't remember the name), and without the second and third books the reader will not understand the full weight behind the conversation between Kirima Seiichi and Minahoshi Suiko. But I don't think any of that detracts from a book I would still rate as an A+. Keep up the good work Seven Seas. Very Happy

The novels do not have any of the pretensions that the anime is weighed down by. They're more akin to action thrillers with a couple mysteries thrown in (or vice-versa), and actually have substantial characterization compared to the tedious proxies in the anime.

But, really, why don't you find out for yourself?

Not available over here in Blighty, and I really can't be arsed to import it. Wink

Boogiepop is available to international stores. It's just a matter of them stocking it.

Actually, it was serialized in Dengeki's novel magazine, and would have appeared at roughly the same time as the fourth and fifth volumes.

What matters is that it wasn't meant to be the first. Hence, screwing up the order isn't something I'd call wise.
