That article has to be the most unintentionally hilarious piece of bilge I've read all week. And since we are in the midst of Presidential election hysteria here in the U.S.A. that is saying a lot. Of course, given that this is coming from MSNBC I am hardly surprised. Oh, and if you ever need a good example of what an editor is supposed to do, they are supposed to point out little inconsistencies like:
When the hack reporter writes this...
And three paragraphs later...

You can't buy anything without looking like a perv if this article is to be believed...
This is the best they could do for non-sexualized adult anime, comparing it to an american comic that started as a dominatrix bondage fantasy? Clearly the writer wasn't a anime fan, I would think it wold be hard for anyone outside to understand, most of the article was fine, a bit misleading in some respects, and a bit of hyperbole at the end there,
Oh my, who allowed that to happen at a book store?!? Call the managment... I found it funny that they talked about the men with figures being proud of not real needing women, and blaming that on Americans becoming like the Japanese...lots of men have been doing this for years already with internet, no figure or real woman needed. No need to go looking to blame Otaku for that. |

I hate how articles like this act like anime/manga or Japanese influence is somehow worse and more corrupting than the things we already have in this country. There are some pretty freaky and depressing fetishes out there folks. Not to mention the writer doesn't seem to understand that there are a great deal of non-hentai anime and manga out there. The writer can't even correctly explain the lolita complex nor the correct definition of otaku. Is the idea of journalistic integrity and research dead? It's not like it would take much effort to have gotten that information right. And a few of those quotes are badly out of context but, hey, that's the drive-by media for you. |

I think a lot of it was true, but either he's a hack writer or has a very bad fact-checker.
I think one part of the article sounds like it came from 4chan... lol |

I think they mean that Gurren Lagann is suggestive and is Overfiend is explicit, respectively. GL is kind of suggestive, yeah, but it's so not the first thing to come to mind when I think 'suggestive anime'. And naughty anime is hardly mainstream. |

You want a prime example of how most of us are going to look like pervs? Wait until Nanoha comes out in stores. It's mostly the soccer-mom's/religous nuts that complain about anime being porn or being the work of the devil that the MSNBC article is written for. Hell, whenever I'm in Best Buy or Barnes/Borders, if I'm asked or see someone trying to find something for a certan age group or for a school, I tell them straight out which titles would be best to get, plus I also show them the suggested age group on the back of manga's. "Women dressed in maid costumes pose as part of a promotion for shops in Tokyo, Japan. The Japanese-style Maid Cafe, which evolved from video games, is now open in Los Angeles and Canada." THESE ARE MAIDS? I HAD NO CLUE! I give this article a 1 out of 3 to match the accuracy of its content. |

Much as I disagree with the tenor of the (apparently misreported) article, if anyone has actually taken the trouble to watch Gurren Lagann then you will know that in episode 6 there is a clear "mock-hentai" depiction of a young naked boy (Gimmy?) inserting his finger into Simon's rectum. Call me a perv if you will, but I can't help but think that some people will find this sexual.

I didn't realize that otaku sex fetishes were catching on so well in America. I guess people see otaku as sex fiends. Does that mean everyone wants in these days?
I megas hate this article. I almost hope the internet burns because of it... But then, of course, I wouldn't get my helping of internet hentai, right? |

I thought I had something to say to this. Something witty. Something informative. Something satirical.
But in the end, I can't find the right words to say about this article. So I have no comment. |

I've seen bunch of young kids reading mangas. They haven't been "trained" to like rape or becoming sex addict. No young kids are smarter then that. Just like how kids on video game, they can tell the differences between reality and fantasy.
So what about the caucasian people that got involved in anime convention in that time also. I wonder if they knew there were anime in Europe before America got into it also.
Well they got Legend of the overfiend right. But Gurren Lagann, were they watching Episode 5 only. Because that was the only episode with a lot of fanservice. Did they watch any episode, maybe not.
Yeah just like Fox News and Jack Thompson get involved in video game. This is nothing but a coup against the new medium. The public are trying to keep their children away from a certain medium. It's not going to work. They did with music, movie, and video game. They won't win this one. I better not see Jack Thompson getting involved with both video game and anime/manga. I'm worried that he may say something stupid (even if he is barred) like he might say: -Warren Jeff was "trained" on Harem anime. -Michael Vicks learned dogfighting from Pokemon. -Jonbenet Ramsey's kidnapper was "trained" on Elfien Lied he might even use video game and anime/manga to support this: -The Akhirbara killer was "trained" on Manhunt 2 and When they cry-Higarushi. |

Well, this isn't really anything different from other anime related articles I've seen on mainstream media sources. Like others have said, I think there's actually a fair bit of truth to what was said in it, but exaggerated in most cases. I wouldn't generalize TTGL as sexually suggestive, for instance, but there are certainly bits of it that could be construed as such.
Having said that, I'm amazed that the article got the spelling of Gurren Lagann correct. Seriously |

That's how I read it, but it's worded in a way that a reader could interpret both to be explicit (can't really be suggestive and explicit at the same time, lol). Coming from a Sexploration column, I really wasn't expecting anything insightful when I read this. I'm just annoyed that my hobby is painted as "perverted" yet again. |

As one might expect, the reporter is taking a serious beating in the response thread.
While I could see the points the article was trying to make - and certainly think there's content worthy of discussion within anime and manga on this subject (hell, you could easily write a whole book about it) - this was a shoddily-executed and myopic way to handle it. |

This is your typical trash tabloid journalism. I've looked at the link to Sharon Kinsella's blog and most of what she has published is dated at 1999 at the latest. I've taken the bother of e-mailing her with a link to that article, asking for her opinion about it. I'll post it here if she bothers to reply either way.
