11 episodes for The Tale of Genji...really? I guess I can understand because they don't want to make it too boring with all the material. It still seems a little on the short side.
They better keep the old school giant-sparkly-eyed character designs.

Holy wow, how are they going to condense 13 volumes into 11 episodes? The original novel was over 1,000 pages too.

It's pretty modular; there's a lot you could take out. Like, say, the entire last third of the story [basically a sequel with new characters], and most of the seduction-of-the-week stuff from the first half. The big problem is the Akashi empress, who is concieved, is born and grows to adulthood in the course of the novel. It's a lot easier to do that in a novel than in motion pictures; you could patch over that with a timeskip, but you'd have to put it in an awkward point in the narrative.

It's doable. Me, I'd rather buy a Taylor translation to go with my Waley; haven't seen the manga, I'm told it takes some significant liberties with the narrative.

I guess none of you have seen the Tale of Genji anime movie. I can't compare with the novel, because Genji is written in a genre I don't care for, but it was amusing in that it was like a guy and his harem with no characterization. Compare to that, 11 episodes is a lot. Smile
