This looks like a very appealing series, but I thought I heard Dark Horse cancelled it. If this is so, I hope another publisher decides to rescue it.

Bride has not been cancelled. Philip Simon, Dark Horse editor, announced in a DH forums post that they had to find a new translator for Bride. Now that they have a replacement, Bride is back on the schedule. Volume 3 is planned for May 2009, and Volume 4 is planned for September 2009.

This review really makes me want to get this series. The cover alone is gorgeous. Does anyone know how many graphic novels this series spans?

Six volumes total in Korea so far. The series is still ongoing.

It is indeed very pretty.

This title was actually mentioned in the new The Gallery column,

Quote:
ANN: You won the Rising Stars of Manga "Best Romance" category with I'll Be Waiting, and the judges mentioned in the intro that your use of space and tones. What inspired those creative decisions?

LL: I was very inspired by the Bride of the Water God manhwa. The way that the work is set up inspired me to aim for a "softer" art style, and from there things just fell into place. In my eye, I saw how everything should go – the pacing, the lighting... everything. The plot was inspired by a Chinese folk tale that I first heard about 7 years ago, where a captive woman jumps off the tower and turns into butterflies as she falls. I wanted to tell that story in my own way.

The timing is impeccable.

Thank you for this info - I had wondered about volume 3.
The DH publication includes all the gorgeous colour pages from the original Korean manwha, by the way. And the book is larger than standard manga format too.
Volumes 3 & 4 will probably be the best of the series so far, if the scanlations are anything to go by - but then the story slows right down to a crawl. I think the manwhaka(?) hasn't quite got the pacing right yet.

wants... badly... but... has no... money... >.<

I'm definitely putting in a purchase request at my library for this series; they've got a huge graphic novel collection, and this looks like a must-have.

Excellent review of an excellent series. This manhwa has a bigger format than usual and also several gorgeous color pages. It deffinitely deserves more attention.

Let's hope this wonderful review gets some visibility for this title. Ido appreciate the background on it.

I agree with a previous post that pacing could be an issue with this series. Volume 1 was languid and pretty sensuous. Volume 2 seemed more determined to get somewhere, no less lovely though. But these are quibbles. It will be a tough wait until next year.

I'll have to look for this at my bookstore to flip through, it sounds nice in any case.

I bought both volumes of Bride of the Water God due to: 1) Gorgeous color art, 2) Great reviews, 3) Friend's recommendation. However, I'm not sure if I'm a harsh critic or I just got my hopes up, but I felt the first two volumes were C+/B- range.

I hope the story picks up and everything becomes less vague. So I look forward to the 2009 releases.

"The Bride of the Water God" contains one of the best artworks I've ever seen in a manga OR manwha. I've already read it online, but I went out of my way to buy the two volumes that were published because of its beauty, it's an awesome read as well. I recommend it to everyone who's into shoujo/seunjong graphic novels. The artist of this book is one of my favorites along with Takeshi Obata, Uhm JungHyun, LeeHyeon-Sook Hayakawa Tomoko [Well...her full body shots]SADAMOTO Yoshiyuki, Kusunoki Kei, Yung Hee Kim, Kayono etc.
