Pretty much agree. It's a fun detour, and more manga-ka should do similar one-shots which aren't just cash-ins.

I'm glad Viz is working on releasing some of the one-shots from Toriyama, but I don't think Cowa! was a great one to start with. Kajika would've been the better choice. Either way, I generally agree with the review. The story's got a nice balance, but the art might a major factor for some manga readers. It's too simple (even by Toriyama's usual standards).

I read the first two chapters when they previewed Cowa! in Shonen Jump and I though the art was great. Yes it is simple, but often manga artists go too much the other way with overly complex art and too much screentone.

I do agree that either they should have left the coloured chapters in colour. Even in the larger page size of Shonen Jump, the bits that were force printed in black and white are a bit grungy. It would have also been nice if they had taken the colour and screen tone out and just printed the whole thing as black and white line art, preferably in a larger size so kids could colour it in themselves.
