Wow, I would have expected that all the hype for Naruto Shippūden: Kizuna would haev launched it to the number one spot...

Yeah, me too. There have been advertisements plastered around Tokyo for months... There was even an entire Naruto EXHIBIT in the observation tower of the sunrise 60 in ikebukuro I randomly stumbled upon (which was actually pretty cool and had a lot of original art, but I digress).
Opening at number 3 and not even being able to bump pokemon off after it's been out a week. Lame.
I think that with the fast rising prices for things here in Japan, families are really starting to cut back. Either that or everyone is just waiting to rent it.

#7 for Sky Crawlers on opening week?
Really? Man... was it like a limited theatre release for the first week or something?

Considering the online marketing it's received over the months, I'm surprised about this as well.
Taking a stab in the dark, could it be the price of cinema tickets affecting films like this? Or is it because (unlike Miyazaki and Pokemon) TSK won't appeal to kids?

Both Ponyo and Pokémon were out for two weeks, actually.
You shouldn't be surprised, though. In 2007, Pokémon was the highest-grossing anime film in Japan.

I feel kinda bad for Naruto. Making less than 2 million in its opening weekend and debuting at #3 can't be a good thing. I wish more companies get on the ball with simultaneous releases.
The last pokemon movie that got a wide release (the last two were only at 300 or fewer theaters compared to the first one being at over 3000 theaters) made $8 million in its US opening weekend.

Only #3? I would've thought that Naruto would've came in at at least #2 (since I know nothing can really beat a movie by Hayao Miyazaki, even Naruto =P).
But meh. Still, coming in at #3 is still good. ^^ Way to go for Naruto!

When does The Dark Knight hit Japan? It will be interesting to see how the Japanese take it.

Wow...Naruto at #7? It's getting its butt whooped by Kung Fu Panda? o.O
That's really...sad. I understand getting being low in the charts thanks to The Dark Knight (I mean, look how it's doing in America; I kinda expected it to do well in Japan), but to be in #7 behind Kung Fu Panda...tsk...
