Assuming this doesn't die in preproduction like so many other live-action anime adaptations did, I'm predicting a $50 million budget, a B-list lead, and a February or March 2010 or 2011 release date.

Well, Fox could break it or make it, I say. There's nothing definite yet, other than they have the rights.

Wow, this is some cool news. Hopefully this film will actually get off the ground.

Don't you mean Justin Chatwin? Andy Serkis playing Ein though. Genious.

I thought that was the Hollywood adaptation of Outlaw Star?

Same thing I was thinking. But Speed Racer was... a different... type of movie (like epilepsy on a movie screen), so maybe they're banking on that?
This should be interesting. As long as it's marketed well (and it doesn't suck), it has real potential for the mainstream audience as well as the otaku. Hope it all goes well.

They're moving ahead with the Dragon Ball movie, though. I think the industry consensus on Speed Racer is that it failed because the property was old and unfamiliar to the film's target audience. You have to be at least 40 to remember when Speed Racer was at its peak of popularity.
On the other hand, Bebop is a much more recent series that's known to most anime fans and many non-fans (we all know someone who says "well, I hate anime...except for Cowboy Bebop.") It should do well, assuming they don't screw it up. They'll have a really hard time doing justice to the series, though. That show was lightning in a bottle, it's going to be really tough to recapture that feel.
