Missed the voting last time around, but all of the matches either went the way I wanted them to or were overwhelmingly against the way I wanted them to go.
Group B-25 Solty & Roy Revant from Solty Rei Shinichi Chiaki & Megumi "Nodame" Noda from Nodame Cantabile Decided to watch a few more episodes of Solty Rei for this tournament's purposes, and I have to say I like how things are developing between Solty and Roy. From Roy's original reluctance to have anything to do with Solty, they've shown a lot of promise in the direction of Action Duo and father-daughter-esque pair. Group B-26 Ayato Kamina & Haruka Shitow from Rahxephon Tomoyo Daidoji & Sakura Kinomoto from Cardcaptor Sakura I have to say that my disappointment with RahXephon and its character will last until such time as I can re-watch the series. So I have to go with the always-cute yet sometimes-suggestive friendship of Tomoyo and Sakura. Group B-27 Rakka & Reki from Haibane Renmei Lumiere & Eclair from Kiddy Grade Lumiere and Eclair certainly deserve to be in this round, but I've always been a much bigger fan of Haibane Renmei and the very distinctive relationship that Rakka and Reki have. Lumiere and Eclair are better than most action duos, but few pairs manage to provoke the range of emotions and ideas that the two angel girls manage. Group B-28 Nanoka Kohinata & Koshiro Saeki from Koi Kaze Sousuke Sagara & Kaname Chidori from Full Metal Panic This was a tough decision, but ultimately the FMP duo offer a greater variety of laugh-out-loud funny, nail-biting suspenseful, and take-my-breath away romantic tension scenes throughout the three series. Hopefully we get the novels and a fourth anime at some point in the future. |

Group B-25
Solty & Roy Revant from Solty Rei [ Video Clip ] vs. Shinichi Chiaki & Megumi "Nodame" Noda from Nodame Cantabile [ Video Clip ] Voting for: Shinichi Chiaki & Megumi "Nodame" Noda Reason: Others' arguments. I haven't seen the series. Group B-26 Ayato Kamina & Haruka Shitow from Rahxephon [ Video Clip ] vs. Tomoyo Daidoji & Sakura Kinomoto from Cardcaptor Sakura [ Video Clip ] Voting for: Tomoyo and Sakura Reason: from the clips Group B-27 Rakka & Reki from Haibane Renmei [ Video Clip ] vs. Lumiere & Eclair from Kiddy Grade [ Video Clip ] Voting for: Rakka and Reki Reason: Tough choice. In the end, Rakka and Reki's interactions are more believable to me, putting aside the fantasy elements of each series. Group B-28 Nanoka Kohinata & Koshiro Saeki from Koi Kaze [ Video Clip ] vs. Sousuke Sagara & Kaname Chidori from Full Metal Panic [ Video Clip ] Voting for: Sousuke Sagara & Kaname Chidori Reason: Koi Kaze is a wonderful series, but as I've argued before, I don't believe the brother-sister pairing is going to last. Therefore, I vote for FMP. |

Group B-25
Solty & Roy Revant from Solty Rei vs. Shinichi Chiaki & Megumi "Nodame" Noda from Nodame Cantabile Voting for: Solty & Roy Reason: This duo made the series for the most part. It was great seeing them develop the bond and how it effected their lives, even though Roy tried so hard to hide it at first. They had such an impact on each other and complimented each other nicely in pretty much any situation. Group B-26 Ayato Kamina & Haruka Shitow from Rahxephon vs. Tomoyo Daidoji & Sakura Kinomoto from Cardcaptor Sakura Voting for: Ayato & Haruka Reason: It's been awhile since I've seen either, but I liked Ayato and Haruka, but I never cared for CCS or Tomoyo in the least. Tomoyo and Sakura never struck me as a particularly strong duo, heck, the fact they're from such a highly regarded series seems to me to be the only reason they've made it this far. This one is a no brainer for me. Group B-27 Rakka & Reki from Haibane Renmei vs. Lumiere & Eclair from Kiddy Grade Voting for: Rakka & Reki Reason: This one is a no-brainer for me as well. Rakka and Reki faced so much together and helped each other through it all mutually. Neither of them would have survived if not for the other. Reki was there for Rakka from the very start, and Rakka did so much to help Reki by the end. Lumiere and Eclair on the other hand were a good duo, but nothing that really compares. Group B-28 Nanoka Kohinata & Koshiro Saeki from Koi Kaze vs. Sousuke Sagara & Kaname Chidori from Full Metal Panic Voting for: Nanoka and Koshiro Reason: Frankly, I've always found Sousuke and Kaname to be a disappointment. As I stated the last time I voted against them, they just go around in circles and never really hook up and meet their full potential. They're used for comedy quite a bit, otherwise Kaname just gets in trouble and Sousuke saves her. The best element, the romantic element, is a continued source of disappointment for these two. I'm not altogether familiar with Koi Kaze, but based on the information provided they seem a better pair than Sousuke and Kaname. Sadly this is another one that I feel is making it further than they should simply because they're in the more popular title. |

Sorry for not voting resently. I kind of got intimidated by the whole thing and everyone. I have a suggestion to fix that for the next tournament but I'd like to know who to suggest that to.
Group B-25 Shinichi Chiaki & Megumi "Nodame" Noda from Nodame Cantabile I've read alot of good things about them. Group B-26 Ayato Kamina & Haruka Shitow from Rahxephon Again, the same reason as above. Group B-27 Rakka & Reki from Haibane Renmei I can't see any reason not to vote for them. I think that they are such a strong group that I want them to move on. Group B-28 Nanoka Kohinata & Koshiro Saeki from Koi Kaze I'm more convinced of them as a pairing after watching the video. |

I could say the same thing about Rakka and Reki, but it sounds like I'd get little agreement on that. I have come to the conclusion, though, that arguing B-27's match-up further is a waste of effort. Lumiere and Eclair are much too strong and dedicated a duo to be losing by the kind of margin they are, regardless of the strength of competition, which makes me wonder how much general perceptions of the respective series are playing into decision-making. It will be very interesting indeed to see how Rakka and Reki fare next round against the far more beloved FMP duo - and no, that shouldn't be an automatic decision, Keonyn, since Sousuke and Kaname have far more going for them than you're giving them credit for. (But that's an argument best reserved for group B-30, I guess.) |

Meh, sorry, but aside from their comedic partnership, Sousuke and Kaname go nowhere and do little for each other. Heck, Jo and Meg from Burst Angel are about as good of a duo as Sousuke and Kaname are. Meg gets in trouble, and Jo saves the day, yay, but at least they seem to have a strong relationship. Maybe Sousuke and Kaname will make a good duo, but so far they are stuck in a relationship that goes nowhere and never grows. It gets old, and it just doesn't work well when it just doesn't build.
You're right though, Rakka and Reki will likely be dropped in the next round because they will face the more popular series. It's an undeserved loss if you ask me, but these contests really are about what titles have been seen the most more than anything aren't they? |

personally they shouldn't even win this round. They aren't the stronger of the two duos and Eclair/Lumiere could do better later on. But that's just my opinion lol. I do think Rakka and Reki are getting a nice boost of popularity though do the starting of the ANN bookclub and that might push them further still. |

As much as I like Lumiere and Eclair, though, I don't know that I'd pick them over Kaname and Sousuke even in the (now incredibly unlikely) event that they made it to the next round. Sousuke and Kaname actually have the more entertaining relationship of the two, and that more than balances out the minor advancements in their romantic relationship. Kaname holds her own or outright contributes often enough that she's not just being saved by Sousuke all the time, and The Second Raid adds entirely too much to discount them as unworthy; the way both react when spoiler[circumstances force an apparently permanent separation on them] gives a powerful indicator of how strong their relationship is, and I'm going to personally recommend the semi-famous haircut scene for the next round of video clips. As far as popularity = wins is concerned, that has already proven to not be entirely true. Jinto/Lafiel ultimately beat out the far better-known Excel/Hyatt duo in Round 1A because people who had seen the former recognized them as a truly great duo compared to the more marginal Excel Saga duo. Likewise, Scrapped Princess seems to be far better-known than Kurau Phantom Memory, but that didn't prevent the passionate support for the latter duo leading them to a relatively easy win. |

By request, voicing my opinions. (Someone has to right?)
Group B-25 Solty & Roy Revant from Solty Rei [ Video Clip ] vs. Shinichi Chiaki & Megumi "Nodame" Noda from Nodame Cantabile [ Video Clip ] Voting For: Solty & Roy Revant. Reasoning: Of these two groups, I feel that Solty and Roy Revant make the better duo. With a beginning that sees Solty save Roy's life that eventually leads to a familiar bond so strong that not even the dark events of the end of the series can break it. It's just impossible for me to vote against them. The other duo clearly has chemistry but the father/daughter bond of Solty and Roy trounces all in this battle. Group B-26 Ayato Kamina & Haruka Shitow from Rahxephon [ Video Clip ] vs. Tomoyo Daidoji & Sakura Kinomoto from Cardcaptor Sakura [ Video Clip ] Voting for: Ayato Kamina & Haruka Shitow. Reasoning: This one's a little tough for me since I feel both are strong duos but in spite of my Yuri love, I must vote for Ayato Kamina and Haruka Shitow. As much as they were friends, I think Sakura at times tolerated Tomoyo more than anything. Ayato and Haruka's bond formed the core of the RahXephon anime and in terms of character development it was their interactions that fueled the development of both of them into the strong charcters they became. They are clearly a worthy duo and far stronger together than they ever were apart. Group B-27 Rakka & Reki from Haibane Renmei [ Video Clip ] vs. Lumiere & Eclair from Kiddy Grade [ Video Clip ] Voting for: Lumiere & Eclair. Reasoning: No contest, Lumiere and Eclair. While the other is certainly valid, I just can't see any comparison. Lumiere and Eclair have not only faced incredible battles together but also spoiler[many lifetimes] of struggles. They have been together spoiler[over and over through time], experiencing every terrible thing the world has to offer, their bond giving them to strength to continue to live. Even more than that, they are halves of a whole. Neither could happily exist without the other, even if they were in a paradise. That is a true duo. Group B-28 Nanoka Kohinata & Koshiro Saeki from Koi Kaze [ Video Clip ] vs. Sousuke Sagara & Kaname Chidori from Full Metal Panic [ Video Clip ] Voting for: Sousuke Sagara & Kaname Chidori. Reasoning: As much as I was moved by Koi Kaze and the story of Nanoka and Koshiro's relationship, I think Sousuke and Kaname are the stronger duo. While I do think both are lasting pairings, there is a desperation to Nanoka and Koshiro. Sousuke and Kaname compliment each other and provide what the other is missing. Their strength as a duo is unquestionable and Kaname is the only person with whom Sousuke can be at peace. In turn, Sousuke gives Kaname inner strength to face anything. This was a very hard choice for me to make because Nanoka pretty much provided Koshiro with the only meaning his life has ever had. Yet that is also the reason why I ultimately had to chose Sousuke and Kaname. The bond between Sousuke and Kaname exists because of both their weaknesses and their strengths. While both men fall apart when seperated from their respective ladies, Sousuke still managed to keep going and provide Kaname with the skills to find him again. Kaname only became stronger after meeting Sousuke, growing as a person. She also triggered possitive changes in him. They made each other more than they were and even parted, they are still more than they were before meeting. Koshiro actually became less when he separated from Nanoka, losing the meaning he'd found. Only in having her near him again could he really live. Both duos are strong but Sousuke and Kaname are stronger. Though I recommend that despite the incest angle, people should watch Koi Kaze. It's fantastic, in my opinion a masterpiece level series. The Full Metal Panic franchise is awesome too. Go buy both on DVD and you'll earn my respect. And possibly a cookie. |

Group B-25: Shinichi Chiaki and Megumi Noda (Nodame Cantabile)
Reason: I hate to admit it, but I've never seen Solty Rei. Chiaki and Nodame do have a fun and goofy relationship due mostly in part to Nodame's bad habits. Group B-26: Ayato Kamina and Haruka Shitow (RahXephon) Reason: This is a pairing whose love for each other crossed time and underwent many painful trials to reunite with each other. Group B-27: Rakka and Reki (Haibane Renmei) Reason: The scantily-clad coupling of Eclair and Lumiere turned me off more due to the implications of their physical age differences. Rakka and Reki were both supporting each other during their toughest times, a bond so strong that Rakka helped Reki out during her lowest moments. Group B-28: Nanoka Kohinata and Koshiro Saeki (Koi Kaze) Kaname and Sousuke aren't a serious coupling to me. In the case of Koshiro and Nanoka, the two have a relationship they know is wrong due to the taboo of their love. But, they can't help but be in love with each other. |

Round 3 Group B is now closed. A link to the results can be found here, but in simple form: blow-out victories for all winners, with the weakest winner still taking 67% of the votes. (First time this has happened!)
Group C will be up momentarily. Last edited by Key on Wed Jul 02, 2008 12:17 am; edited 1 time in total |

Round 3 Group C is now closed.
Yes, this is Key temporarily (?) taking charge of things. 27 votes was a move back in the right direction in Group B. Can we do even better this time? And one minor rules update: Beginning with this group the round will end at midnight EST on Wednesday (i.e. an hour earlier than before). Group C-25 Edward & Alphonse Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist [ Video Link ] vs. Spike Spiegal & Jet Black from Cowboy Bebop [ Video Link ] Winner: Ed & Alphonse Elric Score: 24-2 Group C-26 Zagato & Princess Emeraude from Magic Knight Rayearth [ Video Link ] vs. Batou & Motoko Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell: SAC [ Video Link ] Winner: Batou & Motoko Score: 20-6 Group C-27 Yuji Kaidou & Marlene Angel from Blue Gender [ Video Link ] vs. James & Jessie from Pokemon [ Video Link ] Winner: Yuji & Marlene Score: 19-7 Group C-28 Meryl Stryfe & Milly Thompson from Trigun [ Video Link ] vs. Christmas & Kurau from Kurau Phantom Memory [ Video Link ] Winner: Christmas & Kurau Score: 26-0 - FLAWLESS VICTORY!!! Since I happen to still be online, guess I'll go ahead and vote.
Group C-25 Edward & Alphonse Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist [ Video Link ] vs. Spike Spiegal & Jet Black from Cowboy Bebop [ Video Link ] This one should be no contest. Spike and Jet were always pushing it to be regarded as a true duo, but they've managed to persevere so far due to their popularity and weak competition. Now they've run into the juggernaut that is Ed and Al, anime's strongest and most popular sibling duo. Unlike S&J, they are a pair whose status as a duo (and top contender) is beyond reproach. Group C-26 Zagato & Princess Emeraude from Magic Knight Rayearth [ Video Link ] vs. Batou & Motoko Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell: SAC [ Video Link ] A tougher match-up, since I still don't find the GITS:SAC duo to be all that strong as a duo. The clip for Zagato and Emeraude did not impress me, however, nor have past comments made them seem particularly strong. I am reluctantly voting for Batou and Motoko here, but am open to changing my vote if I see strong enough arguments the other way. Group C-27 Yuji Kaidou & Marlene Angel from Blue Gender [ Video Link ] vs. James & Jessie from Pokemon [ Video Link ] This one could get interesting, but anyone who's seen a good deal of Blue Gender is not going to be voting against Yuji and Marlene here. While Jessie and James make a great and fun team, Marlene and Yuji go through entirely too much crap, and entirely too long and difficult a path to be together, to ultimately get denied. They literally save each other from themselves (Yuji by gradually opening Marlene's closed-off heart, Marlene by dragging Yuji back from the brink when he later loses himself) and manage to hack a loving relationship out of a world and environment that no longer seems to have a place for such sentiment - and that counts for a lot. The provided clip for them shows a time where they have been traveling together for many days, and the scene of Marlene smiling in it is, I believe, the first time in the series she cracks even a faint smile. Group C-28 Meryl Stryfe & Milly Thompson from Trigun [ Video Link ] vs. Christmas & Kurau from Kurau Phantom Memory [ Video Link ] Another one that should be no contest. While I ardently supported Millie and Meryl against Rock and Revy, I cannot support them here, as they are utterly outclassed. Kurau and Christmas have vastly too much going for them to even be seriously challenged in this match-up; I cannot imagine anyone who's seen both series voting against them here. The provided clip shows a beautiful early moment between the Rynax Pair, and that is but one of many scattered throughout the series. (Hopefully it will inspire more people to check out that wonderful series.) |

I think this one will be even more of a landslide compared to the last. I am tempted to write "see above" for my votes, but will write out my choices for formality.
Group C-25 Edward & Alphonse Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist [ Video Link ] vs. Spike Spiegal & Jet Black from Cowboy Bebop [ Video Link ] Voting for Ed and Al. I'm sure it will come down to these two versus the Kurau two. Group C-26 Zagato & Princess Emeraude from Magic Knight Rayearth [ Video Link ] vs. Batou & Motoko Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell: SAC [ Video Link ] Voting for Batou and the Major. I'm still a bit surprised that the Rayearth pair made it this far. Group C-27 Yuji Kaidou & Marlene Angel from Blue Gender [ Video Link ] vs. James & Jessie from Pokemon [ Video Link ] Voting for Yuji and Marlene. I'm also surprised that they made it this far. Blue Gender is so underrated. Group C-28 Meryl Stryfe & Milly Thompson from Trigun [ Video Link ] vs. Christmas & Kurau from Kurau Phantom Memory [ Video Link ] Voting for Christmas and Kurau. It is nice to see these matches since previous rounds consisted of strong pairs matched up and weak pairs matched up. |
