*Sigh* I must now go and listen to the Mortal Kombat theme song.
Which I have. On my iPod. ... Don't you dare judge me! |

I was expecting more Haruhi-hatred ("Haruhatred"?) in the responses. I watched the entire series and still don't see what makes it a masterpiece. The premise is new but it was handled miserably. And no it wasn't too "complicated" for me. I just think it's overrated crap. It's not the worst anime ever created but I found all the characters so stereotyped and dull... and the plot just sort of sat there.
Don't feel bad, I own the soundtrack. Last edited by scortia on Thu Jun 26, 2008 11:16 pm; edited 1 time in total |

I'll admit that I couldn't care less about sports, but its definately possible to make something good based on a sport. I mean, just look at "Angels in the Outfield."
And did anyone else search on Hiropon knowing they were going to regret it anyway? EDIT: That little bunny is too cute. |

That is perhaps the cutest little furry creature I have ever seen. Now I need to find my head.......
I've already expressed my liking for Haruhi on this forum before..... It's just such a visually appealing and fun series with tons of OMG moments that gave me fangasms. I don't think it's a masterpiece. I don't think it was ever MEANT to be one. But it does what it does very well. And yes, I bought the LEs for each volume just so I could have it in broadcast order. Even though I didn't care about all the extra crap that came with them. |

answerman uses stock footage..........
Haruhi was good and fun, but is still too new to really judge it's status, in 10 years if Bandai is still releasing editions and their doing Haruhi "Rebuild 1.0" then we know it's one of the greats, lets just leave it at being a good bit of fun. You wanta know about econ issues, we've had a recession going here in Detroit for the the last 7 years, the rest of the world is finally starting to get hit by what we here in Michigan have been dealing with for the whole of my adult life. Things will get better. -Gabe |

Nozomi looks like they will be announcing two titles at Expo. It could just be the rest of Aria, but its still something. |

I had never heard the about those statue things until the article. *shot*
But I have to say, I didn't find them to be particularly " eww gross". (Though that might be 10 years of desensitization from internet shock pics and stuff talking) I actually found them... I suppose 'cool' would totally be the wrong word. I think "interesting" would be the right way to put it. And funny. Hillariously funny. Included in that funny though is that particular question submitter's reaction to said statues. Obviously they've never seen anime porn before. From their reaction, I was expecting something much more in the gruesome category. |

I don't think that Haruhi is a masterpiece, but it IS one that I want to own and I eagerly await the second season. I'll admit, it took me two tries to get through episode 00, but I stuck with it. I watched it Broadcast order, knowing full well it was out of order, and for the first few episodes I was on the fence about it. Then I saw the baseball episode and was full-out in love with it. No, it's no masterpiece, but I don't care. I enjoyed it, darn it, and that's all that matters in the end.

I'd also argue that a reason sports anime doesn't do too well in the US is because they have a very hard time appealing to actual fans of the sport(s).
Take me, for example. I am a huge football fan; I watch it every week during the season and always watch the Super Bowl no matter who's playing, I have debates and discussions about all the various issues or events and I'm even an ex-player. But while I do enjoy Eyeshield 21 there are several times during an episode that my knowledge and experience with the sport causes me to be a little cynical to some of the elements in the show. A good example is how the teams have a tendency to take much much longer than 40 seconds between plays and spend that time talking about a strategy. Don't get me wrong, I like the show, the manga, and how the creators themselves are also fans; but I can see how it would have a hard time convincing other fans of the sport. Oh, and those sculptures were funny, in a gross out kind of way but still amusing. |

As for that gross-out sculpture, you have to remember the immortal words of Taro Okamoto (not Deidara!):
芸術は爆発だ。 Art is an explosion. |

I think DemonEyes is onto a good point. I know that given a choice between reading a manga about sports and actually watching sports, I'll choose to actually watch.
