I'm referring to the Kare Kano re-release (3 volumes per book), Rurouni Kenshin, Fruits Basket and the like.
Personally, I think it's a great idea. I can give away my old copies and also keep a more convenient (fewer volumes) version at home.
I wish they'd release them more quickly, but they do have a lot of other mangas that haven't been completely released yet, so I understand why there's a delay (4 months per volume for FB).

The volumes are a bit bigger in size, but it is convenient when there is less of them to have to worry about when it comes to shelf space. Somehow for me though I prefer to just keep the original ones.

I didn't own the regular manga versions of Fruits Basket, so I just started purchasing the Ultimate Editions. I am reading volume two now. I think they are a good value for the money. If I already owned the regular manga, purchasing these might be a tough decision (and probably would not happen).
Also, a minor problem. There are two issues bound into one volume, but the pages are numbered like they were one book. This causes a problem in the second half (volume two of the manga), they have a bonus section called the Sound Effect Index. The page numbers indexed do not line up, so it is hard to figure out what they are talking about.
I also wish they'd release them more quickly, mainly because I worry they will stop printing them half way through the series.

Ack! You took the words right out of my mouth! I was really surprised when I started seeing Kare Kano its "ultimate" format...I always wanted to buy the whole series, but the cost plus shelf space just wasn't worth it for me. I really want to buy it now, but I'm worried that they'll just drop the idea midway. I would look to Fruits Basket as a sign that they'll keep it up, but that series is darn popular...so it's only natural that they keep it up IMO.
