Well, I just got through reading this unusually short title by Clamp, and have to say that I was rather very disappointed with ending. It looked like it was really going somewhere towards the end, when they were seemingly able to free the princess and restore order to the world they had been summoned to save, but in the end they ended up killing the princess and destroying the very world they were supposed to save. And in the end, they were in a circle crying. Now I have to say, what went down with that?

I really liked the ending, because it wasn't what you expected it to be.
You know that there is a sequel series, right?

Yes, I am aware of the sequel, which I will probably be looking into as well.

This series was not originally split into two parts, it was one continous story, so I'm not sure you can say much about the ending, as it wasn't really an ending, but just a small stopping point on the way to the next storyline.
However, I understand your disappointment.. I kinda felt that way myself.. I did like that it was unexpected different, but it still left you with that disappointed feeling.

I also thought it was an amazing ending BECAUSE it was unexpected.
Thinking on the overall ending though, you... may not like it^^ I watched the anime before the manga. The anime ending was fine and dandy, and then the manga ending.... well... you'll have to see it for yourself^^ It's interesting, I'll just say that.
Oh, and if you ever want to see the chars in an alternate retelling, try the Rayearth OVA. I actually enjoyed it Many people aren't a fan of watching their favorite characters 'change' personalities, but I like it as the same people, different story

Welcome to CLAMP rule number 1 : The good guys aren't guaranteed a happy ending, no matter how much they might deserve one. Personally, I think it's a brave thing for them to do, because sometimes real life turns out that way.
The thing to keep in mind, in retrospect, is that everyone assumed the mission was to save Emeraude - something which she never actually confirmed herself. It was a logical conclusion that most people would have made. No one would have thought the real mission would turn out being to kill her, and it wasn't the type of thing that was easy for her to come out and ask directly.
Personally it isn't one of my favorite CLAMP titles (picked it up because it's short and a few characters show up in Tsubasa), but a few good renderings of fantastical creatures and the kind of ending which CLAMP would later perfect make it worth reading at least once to get a sense of CLAMP's progression. The second series is just about the same in quality in my opinion.

I'm a big fan of dark and unexpected endings, so I gotta say, I really liked the ending.
Wasn't what you were expecting at all. A complete gut-punch.

OMG!! I love Magic Knight Rayearth too. I seen the whole show back in 1998, except I didn't see the sequals. But, I did read the manga version.

I think Magic Knight Rayearth is my favorite CLAMP manga. It was one of the first mangas I read way back when and the ending really shocked me. When I finished it I was like "That...That's it...?" Sufficiently mind-fudged. I did not enjoy the second series as much though...but if you're looking to be surprised again, you will be.
I don't think it could have ended any other way though.

I always enjoyed the ending because of the play on convention; as CLAMP dismissed the typical happy or perhaps satisfying endings that would be expected to conclude the series. It suprised me at first but I think the journey in the first part of series was very much a coming of age story and that things not going exactly as planned; with Emeraude dead and the world they were trying to save destroyed. It was a further test of their strength. Though, if you were disappointed with the ending; you'll probably enjoy the sequel's ending much more.

I'm sorry that bothers you, I'll remember not to do that in the future.
