Well, as lon as they have enough sense not to compete with giants like "Iron Man", I (in my eternal optimism) think they can do better than that. |

Hmm... Can't wait to see what happens. The movie industry is starving for ideas and if the companies play their cards right, we might have some movies worth watching.

I'm glad Monster is still being talked about >.<, I only know of the premise but IMO it is a perfect story for a live screen adaptation.

The linked article makes no mention of Kadokawa, are you referring to Kadokawa Pictures USA? There's likewise no mention of Aniplex, however I've found mention of it in another article:

Speed Racer rocked. Granted my ONLY childhood memory of Speed Racer is talking to my sister & looking up at the tv as a race ended so I went in with no expectations. Most of the people I saw said much the same-they didin't expect anything & had a real good time. I think if you went in expecting to hate it, you did. Come on, it's a CARTOON from the 60's. They were pretty simple back then. Complex motives? In a cartoon? Yeah, right. It's almost painful to watch how black & white things were portrayed back then. And in 6 weeks Speed Racer's made $42 mill Harold & Kumar in 8 weeks is up to $37 mill. It depends on how much each cost to make vs box office & dvd sales & rentals on if it's deemed enough of a success I love how so many people dumped on PitC3 lastr summer, yet a poll over at MSN asked what franchise do you mss most this summer? Harry Potter & PitC Humans are fickle And American (& others?) anime fans seem incredibly harsh on movies made from their precious anime. Jeez, when I was younger, we rejoiced at a favorite book being made into a movie or tv series. We wanted to see the characters move & speak. It also meant more people would possibly read the book after seeing the movie & know how wonderful it was which also meant the author would make some extra cash & maybe be inspired to write more. Now the first thing out of all the fans' mouths (keyboards) seems to be "It's gonna suck!!!!!" "I'm boycotting Company Hollywood for daring to try to make a movie from the awesomeness that is Japanese Cartoon We're Making These Things To Make Money & Not As Art You Know" "I'm downloading all my anime now because Studio Moneymaker sold the rights to JCWMTTTMM&NAAYK to Company Hollywood. Sell outs!!!" Will the DN movie be faithful? Hell, no. If we're lucky we'll get something more like Grudge than THe Ring (more faithful to the original story), but all movie adaptations tinker with the original (I saw the DN movie Viz put in the theaters last month) |

I've been a fan of Dragonball and the author, Akira Toriyama for years now. I'd hate to see his work be mocked. That is why I don't think this movie will be much of a hit.
Dr. Slump and Dragonball have been Mr. Toriyama's greatest works since he started, I doubt he'd want his series to be mocked by Hollywood. Though if Viz Media is involved in the movie, then this movies stands a chance. I've always enjoyed and thought highly of Viz Media for several years now. |

Viz Media has made quite an impressive haul. About a million of those dollars are from me
Nah, just kidding of course, but I'm pretty sure that this is a good sign that not everything in the anime industry is doom and gloom right now. On top of that, the potential for some awesome Hollywood flicks of our favorite animes...what could be better? I'm excited!!! |

Yea a bunch of my money went to them last year. I think ADV got a good bit too, but alas that didn't help them. There is a lot of potential for more films based on anime, but knowing how some transitions are these day they may not be that good at all. I'm given the benefit of the doubt and hope as well that great films are based off anime favorites. |

Yueh: Harold and Kumar was a low-budgeted R-rated cult stoner flick, so of course it was going to make less money. And I'd be glad if my anime was made into movies by people who actually knew what they were doing. The Wachowskis is as good as it gets, and look how bad that ended up. Now we're going to get the crap directors next. And The Grudge remake was basically Ju-On with a fast-forward button. Shimizu must really think that's what we want, though, since it made so much money.
Teriyaki: I think Dragon Quest is Toriyama's greatest work. 
Anyway, hopefully the news means I can find work with them. Not sure why they want to set up shop here, though, considering the commute's awful, and they'll be overpaying for whatever ratty building they buy/lease. |

Toriyama had a lot of fun doing Dragonball. He put in a lot of mockeries within it and even mocked (for fun) the sources of his ideas, including Hollywood sources. As long as the film follows his model, the fun "mockeries" will be fine. |

I enjoyed Speed Racer. Everyone I know who went in to check it out with no pre-conceived idea it would be great or awesome or suck loved the film. Hell, I saw it twice in one week & was more pissed I teared up at the same place. I know they're manipulating me-it's what Hollywood does & I knew how it would end before I saw it the first time. But it was a great film, particularly considering the original material was a simple '60's cartoon where good & evil didn't have to have any shades of grey as it does now in comics. The Grudge benefited from having the Japanese director handling it. The Grudge 2 was infinitely superior to The Ring 2 (My teen & I pissed off the others in the audience at the theater because that deer scene made me laugh out loud. I swear I could just hear a ganster-mode "You talkin to me" then that deer stood there staring at them) Ring 2 was very, very sad. Grudge & Grudge 2 worked. The American Ring worked to a point (could have lived without some of the added symbolism) But I felt that DN movie we saw in May took a AWFUL lot of liberties with the material. I enjoyed it overall & will get the dvd, but I didn't like the portrayal of Light in the early part HOWEVER, a film is the director's interpretation. Just as there are countless versions of Hamlet & Romeo & Juliet as this director or that actor interprets it, ANY film is someone's take on the story. I've read more than a few stories of scriptwriters seeing their original movie script shredded to where nothing they wrote ended up in the final product. Dragonball Z is not a sacred cow. Toriyama knocked it out to make a buck & tired of it, but was forced to keep it coming when he wanted to end it. In one interview I read (a translation fo one of the artbooks allegedly), he said he & a couple other artists would do lunch & bounce ideas off one another/steal outright jut to keep up with the pace. It was just a paycheck. Most of this stuff is just a paycheck, not some museum-worthy effort. Yes, it's what we enjoy, but smash those pedestals, folks. The guys making this stuff usually seem pretty damned thrilled someone is interested in turning their humble effort into a film, particularly a Hollywood film. For all the nasty comments, Hollywood does have the bucks to make stuff look pretty damned slick. At least they can afford special effects that aren't laughter-inducing. |
