We all know that targetting end-users (i.e downloaders) doesn't solve any problems.
Whoever is in this Canadian Conservative party didn't do their research. |

Sigh... like this is going to solve anything trying to copy the US just irks me more. When will people learn you're not goign to stop downloading m no matter how many times you try?

I dunno- having there be a 500 dollar fine makes it easier for companies to take down illegal downloading, while also ensuring they don't sue some soccer mom for 500000 dollars for downloading some MP3's. If it's enforced, it could be pretty effective, while not going overboard.
Net Neutrality is pretty important, guaranteeing big and small businesses equal opportunities on the internet. |

This sounds like it has potential because $500 per illegal download could be given back to the Japanese licensors. But I don't know how Canada handles the piracy issue as a whole but this should be more widely used in the US. Alas, like it was mentioned, you can't really stop the illegal downloading except for maybe one tactics that's very unorthodox and not really possible: shut down the internet/web as a whole. However, that is so illogical.

this has nothing to do with anime whatsoever, this story belongs on sites that focus on p2p news and such, anyways, this seems to be a watered down version of US copywrite, and we know it doesn't do much good.

Looking back over the past month I've downloaded and watched over 200 episodes of anime. So assuming that law had been in effect at the time I could have been held liable for over $100000. That's utterly ridiculous. If they ever tried to fine me that much I have five words for them. "Collect it from my grave."

oh, so now it'll be just like the US, as much piracy as ever, but now innocent old grandmothers receiving lawsuits from the RIAA because their kids, or their neighbors kids downloaded and shared music through their wi-fi connection.

I also saw an article on the cover of The Province (BC newspaper), which stated that police will soon be ALLOWED to check someone's laptop for such files. So basically if you walked into a Starbucks, grab a coffee, turn on your laptop and a cop comes in, he has the authority to check your personal files and possibly fine you -_-; Well, something along those lines.
Also, here's an interesting comparison: downloading and drug dealers. lol, yeah quite an interesting comparison, but with that people who buy the drugs are fined, but who are the main ones that are targeted for prosecution: the ones who DEAL it. So, why is it the downloaders, rather than the uploaders more charged for something? Why are programs such as Limewire etc STILL available? I see no legal purpose that they can carry. And what about the so-called 'grey market', when it's ONLY 'legal' to download stuff like anime, before it's licensed here? Companies like FUNI just don't care until they are the ones who want it. Hmmm I hope someone knows what I'm trying to get at here^^ |

I would think that targeting uploaders would be more effective than downloaders...or at least downloaders would have to pay a smaller fine. Or uploaders will pay a larger fine. $500 is the mark

It is of great concern to most people who read this site, though, and it's very important that awareness of this issue is raised. Apparently, Industry Minister Jim Prentice is set to introduce this bill in Parliament tomorrow. I strongly advise all of you to, at the very very least, send your MP an e-mail, or possibly even a letter, via http://www.onlinerights.ca. This site makes the process ridiculously easy, so everyone who has even the remotest of concerns surrounding this issue should do whatever they can to make their voices heard on this. It doesn't matter what political alliance your MP is - as long as we make it clear that this bill is an embarrassment to our current government and does NOT hold the support of the general public, we can ensure that it doesn't have a leg to stand on.

Well, if you believe what they claim they are trying to find a balance. That is at least a little reassuring. It's really tough to say anything before we know any further details about how this will actually work. I'm not completely against the restructuring of copyright laws as long as they don't infringe on our rights or result in a few random individuals being stuck with huge and unreasonable fines. If nothing else, this at least worries me less than this crap.
Indeed! After all, it's not like anime has ever been illegally downloaded. It's not like illegal downloading of anime is the single most controversial issue that exists within anime. That would be ludicrous. Oh well, I guess you'll have to settle for just not reading it if you feel it doesn't apply. EDIT: somebody beat me to it... |
