Does anyone besides me really hate this!!
I'm really getting sick of this, i'm a hardcore Jump (franchise) fan. All this Cartoon Network crud is getting on my nerves. I can't like even talk about it anymore, people will think I like the kiddie crud like Pokemon. I can not even name all the reasons it's bad: 1) Naruto has the worst scratchy voice in history. 2) They skipped R*O*C*K*S, and replaced it with Jeremy Sweet's crappy opening. 3) On the VIZ trailers the narrarator is cheesy. 4) They edited all the blood and everything out!! I'm gonna tell it like it is: this is almost as bad as 4Kids! They make a Shonen anime look like Kodomo!! |

Could always buy the uncut boxsets. Wal-Mart sells them pretty cheap, around $30 for the earlier ones.

I don't know what was up with the skipped OP, but I never criticize a translation due to omitted music. See, music rights are generally not held by the same people that hold the rights to the anime as a whole, and music publishers in Japan have a reputation for being completely unreasonable. From what I hear, it's not unusual for them to make stateside distributors jump through hoops or just refuse to let them use the music. That happened with Kodocha- the music rights-holder tried to screw FUNimation over, so FUNi told them to take a hike and replaced the first OP with the second. They drew fire from some fans, but the smart ones knew that they made the right choice. Actually, it sounds like what you need is new friends. I mean, they don't like your taste in anime, fudge 'em. You don't need that crap. (They edit out blood? I hadn't noticed...) |

I've bought a few, the thing I really have a problem with is the fact i'm supporting them, which means supporting the dubbed Naruto. I have a strong hatred for Cartoon Network, and 4Kids and any company who supports them. Kinda sad actually... I'm even more uptight about Yu*Gi*Oh, that one is permanantly destroyed. Everyone thinks it's stupid... but really that's just 4Kids. Kazuki Takahashi is a brilliant mangaka, since he doesn't know English he doesn't know how badly done the English anime really is. |

It's not my friends it's just other people who are listening i'm worried about. My friends are fine! What i'm talking about is the fact that in america it looks childish.... and i'm a young adult. |

If you're a hardcore fan, then I think the uncut DVDs that KairuRoukan mentioned are the best option. Certainly Viz realizes the different groups of fans that are out there. They have to have a different version for TV so they can get wider viewership and popularity for their title (plus they don't want to tick off parents and censors), and also the uncut version for people like you who may have watched the fansubs or read the manga and are already fans of the show and want it to remain as accurate as possible. As for editing out the blood, that's just what needs to be done to get the show on TV. That's not Cartoon Network's demand nor Viz's concession; it's just what they have to do because of the FCC. And changing the song, I agree that is kind of annoying, but they also want their show to appeal to as wide of a group of fans as possible. Or as Bellos said, it might be a licensing issue. Does anyone know if Rocks appears on the uncut DVD?
I'd try not to think of it as supporting the dub. You're supporting the company and the US anime industry, as well as even the Japanese anime companies. It means we'll continue to have companies releasing anime here, they'll continue to pay the Japanese companies to license their shows, and the Japanese companies will then have more money to produce new shows. It's a domino effect. Viz needs the dub on there because a lot of fans prefer to listen in English, which is fine. Viz certainly wants to make as much money as possible and satisfy as many fans as possible. Additionally, since you're buying the uncut version, that's also telling Viz what you want out of the title. There's no reason to doubt that they're looking at their sales numbers and comparing those of the uncut version and the edited version. By buying that version, you're essentially voting on what you prefer about current and future releases. Also, you shouldn't worry about what other people think. Some people are just ignorant. And, forgive me, but this was the first thing I thought of. I realize now that is not the case for you. Last edited by larinon on Sat May 31, 2008 4:34 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Whoa, whoa... I'm sorry, but the anime was bad from the start, okay? Admittedly 4Kids didn't do it many favors, but even with a top-tier translation, it has huge problems- the old DBZ phenomenom, where they catch up to the manga and have to start padding things out big time, is very much in effect from Battle City onward. They even stopped a major plotline dead in it's tracks because they needed to stall for time. The plot is weak, too- it's half standard-issue shonen cliches and half overwrought battle scenes. As things went on, it became more and more a merchandise-driven series. And since they constantly had to push new cards from new expansions, they had to continuously shoehorn new cards into the series. At the series' nadir, nearly every single move involved some new card that the combatant pulls out of his ass, followed by several minutes of exposition and internal-monologue strategizing. Let's point the finger where it should be pointed, okay? 4Kids may have made Yu-Gi-Oh worse, but it was already so broken that they would have had to trim 3/4 of the average episode to make it watchable. |

I agree full heartedly that Naruto voice is very annoying and scratchy, but i will also say that that voice can sometimes fit with his character. I'm not watching Naruto on tv anymore because it's just the filler stuff, and I think that Viz really did a quality job on it. the quirks about the blood is the FCC's fault, or more accurately, it's because they don't want to piss off the one Parent who just has to go and make a big deal out of a tiny drop of blood.
i've never watched the fansubs, so i can't comment on the opening or the preview announcer, but I'm sure that a preview for any shonen show is going to get pretty cheesy at some point in either language. |

That's exactly the thing I have a problem about, these parents are clueless. It wasn't made for 3-year olds, if it was made for toddlers it's home manga magazine would be called "Weekly Kodomo Jump" (Weekly Childrens' Jump), which isn't right! And for some reason they only left the Sexy Justu in , and that's real profanity. I just don't get it. Now we have a bunch of perverted 3-year olds saying ,"Haha, Sexy Justu, Haha". Which really, really, isn't right. |

but it wasn't intended for an adult audience either. i think it falls into more of a middle to early high school age demographic, but i mean no offense to anyone older who does watch/read it. and "sexy" really isn't profanity, "let's go have random, promiscuous sex in the parking lot while some old guy watches" is.

You missunderstood me, "sexy" isn't profanity ... a naked woman with a thin cloud around her is. You are right it is aimed at "middle to early high school audiance". |

Honestly, I think you're too hung up on this. While I understand that you (and many others) have a different view of what the company has done, I don't think it's worth it being hung up on a single or small group of very popular anime. Localizations are very likely to irritate you if you're expecting them to "be just as good as the Japanese version." To find the anime to your liking, you should follow the directors or companies that do dub anime to your liking.
My personal favorite was Geneon except... |

I can say for a fact that it's on the DVD.
The FCC doesn't regulate cable. The edits made are by CN's own standards. Anyways, the Naruto dub on CN has very few edits. But I really don't see why are you so upset if there's uncut DVDs available. |
