As some of you may know, I'm planning to write a paper in my technical writing class over anime.

I have other threads out there that coincide with this one. However, in order to prevent possible confusion, I've made them separate so that each one could concetrate on just 1 particular topic.

And for this thread, I'd like suggestions or information on any anime pictures or artwork to use in my paper.

Now, I'm still merely in the brainstorming process, as this paper hasn't even been formally assigned yet. But today, my professor has informed the class that artwork will be required in this and some of our other papers.

She went into particular detail over the front cover of our big paper (this one), and I was wondering what kind of cover I should have. Is anyone out there an expert in computer graphics designing or something like that?

She also mentioned that she will take the 3 best covers for this paper and whoever's is judged most noteworthy, the winner gets 1 and 1/2 points added to their semester average. And since my topic will be anime, I know I can win this. For the paper itself, I was going to try and get screencaps from the movies and weave them into their respective margins when I get to it. I was also thinking to, possibly have a few pages of artwork by themselves, but that might be percieved as just trying to take up space (I'll ask her, though). So, any suggestions?

EDIT: Here are links to the other threads:

I had to do a similar report just last week (granted, not on anime, on comic books). For the cover, I drew a variety of comic superhearos in there action poses. Then, on the next page, I drew the villlens ploting against them. Throught the report, I included famous covers and other drawings. Then, if you can, use Powerpoint. I had 5 frames filled with pictures. When I presented it in my class, people really liked that Powerpoint. I got a A.

I would take a few of the best drawn anime characters I could find, and then compile them together using paint shop or something, the only concern would be to fill the cover, but still keep it unclutered and make each picture easily definable yet go together as a whole with the others.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Your professors ask you guys to put graphics in your covers and papers? What kind of university do you go to?

What I'd do is put the respective pictures into the appendices and just refer to them either in the text or in footnotes, but it seems your prof just wants you to slap pictures into the paper itself.

Your report isn't big enough to do what I would want to do (and they rarely are), so I'd just make a collage of some sort and use that for the cover.

I am currently attending the University of North Texas.

And, I'm not quite sure on how she wants the visuals presented yet. She's lecturing about design this week, and I think, next week also.

If anyone else has suggestions for layouts, I'm glad to hear them. And no, I can't use Powerpoint because it's just a formal report on paper (and I think she want's them binded too).

I think production sketches are would be a very nice example of artwork for your report. You can find production sketches of both anime, and american animation all over the net.

Here are a couple utena ones for an example.

animation cel art

promotion cel art

Well one idea that pops into mind is, once you've decided what animes you're going to touch on, gather a collection of images off of various websites then edit them using Photoshop to form a type of collage (i'd be glad to assist if you're not familiar with the program). You can get some really amazing results if you put enough time an effort into it. Just a suggestion though.

I've been thinking. Should I use just any picture to make the paper look pretty/cool. Or, shoud I just stick to the pictures of whatever anime I cover. I'm going to make the assumption my professor has never really been exposed to the great artwork that is anime. So, I might want to impress her with all of the great pictures. What do you all think?

This might be too late for you to use this, but for a color reproduction purposes you will probably want to go with hanken mono art. Hanken mono is the rare promotional artwork found on the Lds, dvds, and cds. These are usually not available for sale to the public. The term 'hanken mono' means copyrighted object. A hanken cel is a cel that was used for such copyrighted promotional purposes. These were the basis for things such as magazine ads or stories and images on books, shitajiki, trading cards, CDs, DVDs or other goods. While many hanken are very large to accomodate the detail and quality required, they can come in all sizes. The familiar images can become quite valuable. Many hanken have hand-inked lines and are produced with much higher quality than a cel used for animation. However, others might be less detailed and cheaper if they were made for purposes where the detail and quality wasn't required (used for a very small image in a book or for a cheap set of trading cards).

Depending on which anime series you are writing on you have some options on where you can go to huntdown the most appropriate. Also, I would avoid putting too many gengas, dougas and concept art. Most people will not understand or care about what goes into the production and pro-production anime process, simply put it is too technical. Here are some sites that collect hanken art and without knowing which series you are using, I also recommend you using images of cel art.

http://www.eu.animanga.com/cels/book/archive1/p1241.html
http://www.animaxis.com/en/shop/find.asp?

This is get you in the right direction since the artwork is usually gorgeous and in color! As for doing combining them into one image for the cover, use Photoshop and blur the edges for some of them (try not to choose too many only the series you write about) and form some cohert theme or overall image. You could also try to use the image to fill-in text color. Oh and if allowed I recommend a gate fold cover! Smile If you need hanken images for specific series PM or reply, good luck!

I think I'll use a picture from Haibane Renmei as my cover page for my paper.

Perhaps this one?

If anyone else has suggestions, feel free to let me know. I need something asymetrical and eyecatching. Also, I'd prefer it be something that draws your eye from left to right. Thanks in advance!
