Yes they actually did. The short story is spoiler[Belldandy and Keiichi had been friends as children, but as punishment for breaking Heaven's rules, Belldandy was made to seal Keiichi's memories. That's why during the later part of the OVA Keiichi wanting to buy Bell that ring, before she has to go back to heaven, was so important. It relates to their previous friendship and is one of the main factors, along with other things Kei vaguely remembers, that helps to unlock Kei's old memories that had been sealed away. ]Unless I am very mistaken, as I have not read the early manga chapters in a while, this aspect was unique to the OVA and not part of the manga nor more current tv series. Though I could be having a brain fart of that part.

Whew. I finally found a day to myself when I can take some time to vote this round. I missed voting the last round and I actually knew a lot of the couples that time. I even planned on including a funny explaination of just how much I disliked xxxHolic with some lines from Green Eggs & Ham and I am very glad neither of those duos made it. There wasn't a single thing I liked about that anime, characters included.

Group A-17

Belldandy & Keiichi Morisato from Ah! My Goddess
vs.
Tsubasa & Hikaru from Figure 17

Winner: Beldandy & Keiichi
I've always had an attachment towards this couple, and with the voting as close as it is it would seem that both couples are equally worth of advancing, so they would be my personal choice.

Group A-18

Nicholas D. Wolfwood & Vash the Stampede from Trigun
vs.
Hermes & Kino from Kino's Journey

Winner: Nicholas D. Wolfwood & Vash the Stampede
Nicholas and Vash are a longstanding due, and are no doubt a viable duo even though there are other duos in this tournament I would vote ahead of them. In this matchup, I simply can't bring myself to vote for a motorcycle.

Group A-19

Rosette Christopher & Chrono from Chrono Crusade
vs.
Lelouch Lamperouge & CC from Code Geass

Winner: Rosette Christopher & Chrono
They were my initial pick before reading the guide, and the guide only served to back up that pick so it's Rosetter & Chrono ftw.

Group A-20

Renji Asou & Chihiro Shindou from ef - a tale of memories
vs.
Utena & Anthy from Revolutionary Girl Utena

Winner: Renji Asou & Chihiro Shindou
While I haven't seen either yet, ef is the type of anime which I am most attracted to, so I have no doubt that I will find the characters in it more appealing than those in an anime I don't care for all that much. I'm really looking forward to an ef R1 release Very Happy

Group A-21

Ash & Pikachu from Pokemon
vs.
Tomo Takino & Koyomi "Yomi" Mizuhara from Azumanga Daioh

Winner: Ash & Pikachu
It seems to me by now Tomo & Koyomi have won this category, so I don't feel too terrible voting for Ash & Pikachu. Those guys are one of the gateway drugs to anime and with the amount of attention Pokemon has grabbed with those two as the focus of the show it gives them a lot of pull as a duo.

Group A-22

Robin & Amon from Witch Hunter Robin
vs.
Takumi Mayama & Ayumi Yamada from Honey and Clover

Winner: Takumi Mayama & Ayumi Yamada
I didn't like Robin & Amon in the first round, and nothing anyone has said has convinced me I was wrong in that. Takumi and Ayumi should win the round, but at the moment it seems closer than it should be, so they definitely get my vote.

Group A-23

Horo & Craft Lawrence from Spice and Wolf
vs.
Shuji & Chise from Saikano

Winner: Horo & Craft Lawrence
I haven't seen either, but going by the guild and opinions of forum users, this appears to be a blowout. And from my initial belief, I agreed with the vote as well.

Group A-24

Van Fanel & Hitomi Kanzaki from Vision of Escaflowne
vs.
Jinto Lin & Lafiel from Crest of the Stars

Winner: Jinto Lin & Lafiel
Again, having seen neither series I have to go with the guide and opinion. Jinto and Lafiel seem to have had the strongest backers throught the tournament, so I'm going to take people's word for it.

Group A-17

Belldandy & Keiichi Morisato from Ah! My Goddess
vs.
Tsubasa & Hikaru from Figure 17

Winner: Beldandy & Keiichi
Only because I have seen some of Ah! My Goddess, as opposed to none of Figure 17.

Group A-18

Nicholas D. Wolfwood & Vash the Stampede from Trigun
vs.
Hermes & Kino from Kino's Journey

Winner: Nicholas D. Wolfwood & Vash the Stampede
I would rather not vote for a motor cycle in any match up.

Group A-19

Rosette Christopher & Chrono from Chrono Crusade
vs.
Lelouch Lamperouge & CC from Code Geass

Winner: Lelouch Lamperouge & CC
Well, I have seen some of Code geass, not that much yet, but I can tell that they will be a good duo.

Group A-20

Renji Asou & Chihiro Shindou from ef - a tale of memories
vs.
Utena & Anthy from Revolutionary Girl Utena

Winner: Utena & Anthy
While I haven't seen either yet, I will randomly guess.

Group A-21

Ash & Pikachu from Pokemon
vs.
Tomo Takino & Koyomi "Yomi" Mizuhara from Azumanga Daioh

Winner: Ash & Pikachu
Okay, this one bother me a bit, when people vote for tomo and yomi. Sure I liked AzuDai alot, and they were great friends, but they were part of a group of friends, on the other hand Ash and pikachu, who probably everyone found annoying at times, were always a team as them. They have been friends from the beginning and risk their lives for each other. they obviously deserve to move on.

Group A-22

Robin & Amon from Witch Hunter Robin
vs.
Takumi Mayama & Ayumi Yamada from Honey and Clover

Winner: Takumi Mayama & Ayumi Yamada
Random Guess.

Group A-23

Horo & Craft Lawrence from Spice and Wolf
vs.
Shuji & Chise from Saikano

Winner: Horo & Craft Lawrence
Random

Group A-24

Van Fanel & Hitomi Kanzaki from Vision of Escaflowne
vs.
Jinto Lin & Lafiel from Crest of the Stars

Winner: Jinto Lin & Lafiel
Again, I haven't seen either series, but according to what other say, these two deserve to move ahead.

One last argument for Renji and Chihiro before the round wraps up.

Himura, Chihiro's guardian, lost faith in love years ago. This is part of the reason he tries to stop Renji and Chihiro from becoming a couple. However, their feelings for each other and lengths to which they go in order to overcome the obstacles the face not only wins the support of the cynical old man spoiler[as evidenced by his entrusting of the key to the school's roof to Chihiro to give to Renji], but also renews his faith in love, and spoiler[Himura is reunited with the woman he's in love with.]

*in before the end of the round, I hope*

Group A-17
Belldandy & Keiichi Morisato from Ah! My Goddess
Tsubasa & Hikaru from Figure 17
Taking the fight to the bitter end. Yeah, Belldandy and Keiichi are one of anime's iconic couples, but from what I've heard they're a bit on the tame side as romantic couples go. While they're often imitated, never equaled, Tsubasa and Hikaru are rarely imitated, never equaled. About the closest parallel I can draw to them is the tournament powerhouse of Kurau and Christmas from Kurau Phantom Memory. Tsubasa and Hikaru are one of the best "friends from unusual circumstances" pairs I've seen, and their relationship is moving and powerful every step of the way.

Group A-18
Nicholas D. Wolfwood & Vash the Stampede from Trigun
Hermes & Kino from Kino's Journey

I was going to go for Hermes and Kino, but decided to switch it. While Hermes is a great "sounding board" for the thoughts and philosophies featured in Kino's Journey, I remembered that he doesn't actually do all that much. So I'm giving the vote to the more active competitive/cooperative duo of Vash and Wolfwood.

Group A-19
Rosette Christopher & Chrono from Chrono Crusade
Lelouch Lamperouge & CC from Code Geass
LeLou and CC are more of an artificial, uneasy alliance in my view. Maybe the second season will establish something, but for now I'm going with the amusing and tragic antics of Rosette and Chrono.

Group A-20
Renji Asou & Chihiro Shindou from ef - a tale of memories
Utena & Anthy from Revolutionary Girl Utena

It's a tough choice, since Utena and Anthy are a core duo in one of the earliest anime I got a taste of. But since theirs eventually winds up as one twisted connection in a show full of twisted connections, I'm going with the duo from the show I watched because of this tournament.

Group A-21
Ash & Pikachu from Pokemon
Tomo Takino & Koyomi "Yomi" Mizuhara from Azumanga Daioh
I gave Ash and Pikachu the semi-default last time around, but they don't win out over this hilarious manzai duo from Azumanga.

Group A-22
Robin & Amon from Witch Hunter Robin
Takumi Mayama & Ayumi Yamada from Honey and Clover
I don't feel too strongly for or against either one of these duos, so I'll vote for the one that inspired a little more emotional reaction in me, thanks to Ayumi's spoiler[bean-sprout] scene in H&C. Heh, I guess that's not really a spoiler if you haven't actually seen the show.

Group A-23
Horo & Craft Lawrence from Spice and Wolf
Shuji & Chise from Saikano
Never saw Spice & Wolf, but I don't see that duo winning over the Saikano pair that people are still talking about 6 years after the initial airing.

Group A-24
Van Fanel & Hitomi Kanzaki from Vision of Escaflowne
Jinto Lin & Lafiel from Crest of the Stars
Somewhat tough choice in this Sunrise Showdown, but I'll go with Jinto and Lafiel for reasons stated in the previous round.

With close to 9 hours left to vote all contests have more or less be decided except for:

A-20 - where Renji & Chihiro are in the lead 17-16

A-23 - where Horo & Craft are in the lead 17-16

pretty close, will be interesting to see what happens.

Oh, on a side note, as far as I can tell the most votes ever cast in a round in any of the previous tournaments was Round 1 Group A of the Crazy Tournament with 33 votes.

Right now we stand at 33, so close.... come on one more vote Smile

Hello, I'm the record breaker (I have about 5 free mins to vote so bear with my quick reasons this time around)

Group A-17

Belldandy & Keiichi Morisato from Ah! My Goddess
vs.
Tsubasa & Hikaru from Figure 17

Tsubasa & Hikaru. I never actually liked Belldandy nor Keiichi much, she's too fabricatedly perfect, while from what I know about Tsubasa and Hikaru they indeed are a very strong duo, and deserve to go on.

Group A-18

Nicholas D. Wolfwood & Vash the Stampede from Trigun
vs.
Hermes & Kino from Kino's Journey

Hermes and Kino. They have a deep level of understanding of each other both personally and philosophically that Wolfwood and Vash don't match up.

Group A-19

Rosette Christopher & Chrono from Chrono Crusade
vs.
Lelouch Lamperouge & CC from Code Geass

Rosette and Chrono. CC and Lelouch aren't really that strong of a duo, she's just there and he just needs her to help him. Rosette and Chrono not only work together well, they really care about each other, not just in their words, but in their actions too.

Group A-20

Renji Asou & Chihiro Shindou from ef - a tale of memories
vs.
Utena & Anthy from Revolutionary Girl Utena

Renji and Chihiro. Sorry to Utena and Anthy, who I know are a strong pair, but Renji's willing to do anything for Chihiro and vice versa.

Group A-21

Ash & Pikachu from Pokemon
vs.
Tomo Takino & Koyomi "Yomi" Mizuhara from Azumanga Daioh

Ash and Pikachu. I'm still of the opinion that Tomo and Yomi are barely a duo and shouldn't be here.

Group A-22

Robin & Amon from Witch Hunter Robin
vs.
Takumi Mayama & Ayumi Yamada from Honey and Clover

Mayama & Ayu. Robin and Amon shouldn't be here either.

Group A-23

Horo & Craft Lawrence from Spice and Wolf
vs.
Shuji & Chise from Saikano

Shuji and Chise. What he's willing to do for her is astounding. Plus they travel to faraway places together and are at each others' sides at the last critical moments of survival.

Group A-24

Van Fanel & Hitomi Kanzaki from Vision of Escaflowne
vs.
Jinto Lin & Lafiel from Crest of the Stars

Jinto & Lafiel. Er...I'm by now more than convinced that they're a strong duo.

Hmmm. . . unless someone slips in a vote or change at the last minute, looks like we're going to have a tie in group A-23.

Which I'm perfectly fine with, as both duos are fully deserving of advancing to at least the third round. That just means Jinto & Lafiel will be facing off against two serious competitors instead of one in the third round. Razz

Anyway, the Group B Duos Guide remains from the first round. Later in the week, when I (might) have more time, I'll shuffle it around so the still-active duos are at the top of the list and updated for the best arguments to come out of Round 1. That should become standard practice for all of the groups, and expect longer entries (possibly with multiple supporting arguments?) for most survivors as the tourney progresses

Since frentymon is super busy tonight I'll be posting the next round at the 10:00pm PST deadline.

Now in the event of a tie how does that effect mini game votes? Do both pairs get considered a winner then?

Well, regardless of whether both count or neither count, relative score won't change.

Group B-17
Saber & Shiro Emiya from Fate/Stay Night vs.
Solty & Roy Revant from Solty Rei
Voting for: Solty & Roy
Reason: I've seen neither, I still have the impression that Shiro is unimpressive, and the first round gave me a strong impression of a father/daughter bond between Solty and Roy.
Possibility for change: Yes

Group B-18
Shinichi Chiaki & Megumi "Nodame" Noda from Nodame Cantabile vs.
Albert & Count from Gankutsuou
Voting for: Nodame & Chiaki
Reason: I've seen neither show, so I'm picking the romantic relationship. For now.
Possibility for change: Yes

Group B-19
Athrun Zala & Kira Yamato from Gundam Seed vs.
Ayato Kamina & Haruka Shitow from Rahxephon
Voting for: Ayato & Haruka
Reason: The relationship between Ayato and Haruka is one of the strong points of Rahxephon. Couple that with the lukewarm opinion of a couple from a series I haven't seen and this is an easy choice.
Possibility for change: No

Group B-20
Minamo "Nyamo" Kurosawa & Yukari Tanizaki from Azumanga Daioh vs.
Tomoyo Daidoji & Sakura Kinomoto from Cardcaptor Sakura
Voting for: Sakura & Tomoyo
Reason: Has Nyamo ever called Yukari for help? No. Does Sakura ever call Tomoyo for help? Yes, frequently.
Possibility for change: No

Group B-21
Rakka & Reki from Haibane Renmei vs.
Hikaru & Kaoru Hitachiin from Ouran High School Host Club
Voting for: Rakka & Reki
Reason: Hikaru and Kaoru's bond comes from isolating themselves from other people. Not a healthy thing.
Possibility for change: No

Group B-22
Mireille Bouquet & Kirika Yuumura from Noir vs.
Lumiere & Eclair from Kiddy Grade
Voting for: Lumiere & Eclair
Reason: Because I've seen one episode of Kiddy Grade compared to one AMV made using clips from Noir.
Possibility for change: Yes

Group B-23
Midori Kasugano & Seiji Sawamura from Midori Days vs.
Nanoka Kohinata & Koshiro Saeki from Koi Kaze
Voting for: Nanoka & Koshiro
Reason: They try to fight their feelings, but they just can't.
Possibility for change: Slim

Group B-24
Nagisa Furukawa & Tomoya Okazaki from Clannad vs.
Sousuke Sagara & Kaname Chidori from Full Metal Panic
Voting for: Sousuke & Kaname
Reason: Nagisa and Tomoya are a sweet couple, but Tomoya could have ended up fine paired with just about any of the girls spoiler[ZOMG, I'm penalizing Clannad for being based on a bishojo game], but Sousuke NEEDS Kaname.
Possibility for change: Yes

Group B-17

Saber & Shiro Emiya from Fate/Stay Night
vs.
Solty & Roy Revant from Solty Rei

My vote is for Saber & Shiro because even though they spoiler[weren't able to stay together], they did their best to protect each other.

Group B-18

Shinichi Chiaki & Megumi "Nodame" Noda from Nodame Cantabile
vs.
Albert & Count from Gankutsuou

I haven't seen either but I like what has been said about Shinichi & Megumi

Group B-19

Athrun Zala & Kira Yamato from Gundam Seed
vs.
Ayato Kamina & Haruka Shitow from Rahxephon

Ah, this one is easy Ayato & Haruka. For her faith and trusting that she will find him again and for his memories of what used to be.

Group B-20

Minamo "Nyamo" Kurosawa & Yukari Tanizaki from Azumanga Daioh
vs.
Tomoyo Daidoji & Sakura Kinomoto from Cardcaptor Sakura

While I hate to vote against Nayamo and Yukari, I just like Sakura and Tomoyo a lot better.

Group B-21

Rakka & Reki from Haibane Renmei
vs.
Hikaru & Kaoru Hitachiin from Ouran High School Host Club

As much as I would like to vote for the twins, I honestly think that Rakka & Reki are the much stronger pair.

Group B-22

Mireille Bouquet & Kirika Yuumura from Noir
vs.
Lumiere & Eclair from Kiddy Grade

Hmmm, two groups of strong women but I'm going to have to go for the relationship that has lasted longer, Lumiere & Eclair

Group B-23

Midori Kasugano & Seiji Sawamura from Midori Days
vs.
Nanoka Kohinata & Koshiro Saeki from Koi Kaze

Going to vote for the couple where one really gave the other a hand, Midori & Seiji

Group B-24

Nagisa Furukawa & Tomoya Okazaki from Clannad
vs.
Sousuke Sagara & Kaname Chidori from Full Metal Panic

Ah, another VERY easy one Sousuke & Kaname!

Group B-17

Voting For: Solty & Roy Revant from Solty Rei
Reason:I love both shows and would to see Shiro and Saber go on but honestly they just don't stack up here. I mean both duos started off as strangers, but through the course of equal amount of time I think Roy and Solty grew much closer then Shiro and Saber and had a more significant impact on each other. That's not to belittle the impact Shiro and Saber had on each other. But if they were a 5.0 earthquake Roy and Solty would be a 7.0. Their bonds are stronger, deeper, and in the end more sincere to me. It's also different to see a father daughter bond when you often see more mother daughter or mother son type bonds. It was refreshing.
Possibility of change:Little

Group B-18
Voting For: Albert & Count from Gankutsuou
Reason: Both pairs seem equally deserving honestly. Both give off that air of being refined and classic in nature. Both are strong and play off each other well. However I think in the end Albert and the Count are just a bit stronger and more deserving IMO. I honestly don't care which pair moves on but I think they are a bit stronger and more deserving.
Possibility of change:moderate

Group B-19
Voting For: Ayato Kamina & Haruka Shitow from Rahxephon
Reason: Personally I think neither should have one in round one. Especially not the emo pair of Athrun and Kira. They seem to much like an overplayed soap opera. They also are not anywhere as close IMHO or as strong of a duo as Ayato and Kamina. Athrun and Kira annoyed me more then anything, and even without that they simply do not compare here in this match up. Ayato and Haruka have them outclassed in almost every conceivable way.
Possibility of change:very little

Group B-20
Voting For: Minamo "Nyamo" Kurosawa & Yukari Tanizaki from Azumanga Daioh
Reason: Honestly I don't think either pair is that strong nor really that deserving to go onto the next round. There have been many stronger duos that had unfortunate match ups early on that should be heading on and not either of these two. I don't think either couple is even the strongest duo from their respective show. I honestly think they're about equal in this match up so I'm going to vote for the duo I simply liked better and found less annoying. My vote could easily be swayed here as I honestly don't care about either duo moving on that much.
Possibility of change:high

Group B-21
Voting For: Rakka & Reki from Haibane Renmei
Reason: This one is an easy choice IMHO. Hikaru & Kaoru are fun sure, but they simply aren't as strong as Rakka and Reki nor are they as liked by the other characters in their respective shows IMO. I think Rakka and Reki are a closer, stronger, and more honest duo then Kaoru and Hikaru. Rakka basically saved Rekki and their bonds are just more genuine to me and they are more deserving to move on. They are easily the stronger duo here.
Possibility of change:very little

Group B-22
Voting For: Lumiere & Eclair from Kiddy Grade
Reason: I didn't expect Kirika and Mireille to make it to this round. I enjoyed the show a lot and am happily surprised they did make it especially since I figured they wouldn't. However, this is as far as they go. They are a good duo and do work pretty well together. They go through a lot of action much as Eclair and Lumiere do. However they simply lack the deep committed bonds Eclair and Lumiere have. I mean Mireille and Kirika go through Noir gaining more trust from the other as their bond deepens. Lumiere and Eclair start off with that deep bond from the start and have actually had it already for many lifetimes. They;ve literally spent a half dozen or more lives together supporting each other no matter what, and are willing to sacrifice themselves for the other without question. Their devotion to each other is the strongest aspect of the show and is one of the strongest non-romantic friendships in all of anime IMHO. Very few, romantic or otherwise, could even begin to measure up to those 2. They've been through hell for each other and despite it all have never faltered in their devotion and friendship for each other. Even when their previous memories have been hidden from them. They are the more deserving pair here.
Possibility of change:very little

Group B-23
Voting For: Nanoka Kohinata & Koshiro Saeki from Koi Kaze
Reason: While Seiji and idori do arguably go through a lot together, with her being his right hand and all, I just don't see their relationship stacking up to Nanoka and Koshiro's They're simply stronger and more believable as a duo to me. Since I didn't expect either to make it to this round though my vote could be more easily swayed here.
Possibility of change:moderate

Group B-24
Voting For: Nagisa Furukawa & Tomoya Okazaki from Clannad
Reason: While I haven't seen hardly any of Clannad, besides previews and 2 episodes, I simply find Kaname to be damn irritating. I don't know what it is but I find her character to be whiny and just annoying. Maybe this changes as I have yet to watch The Second Raid all the way through but so far she's annoyed me more then anything else. I'd have much rather seen a Souske & Tessa pairing representing the show. So from what I've seen of Clannad I feel I would like Nagisa and Tomoya more so they get my vote. Plus I think in the end they would become a stronger duo then Souske and Kaname as Kaname half the time treats him like dirt. Even if they are being an iconic duo she honestly does not treat him the way a strong duo should IMO.
Possibility of change:little to moderate
