Hmm, that's what I thought that section on "downloads to special devices" meant... but it still doesn't make much sense to me. What "devices" exist out there that could allow high quality downloads? XBOX360's video download service seems like the only one...

Perhaps that's just a fancy way of saying that their downloads will have DRM. In any case if their strategy is to sell DRMed downloads and Japanese priced blu-rays... I don't see that denting the fansub market unless those releases happen the same time as Japanese television broadcasts. Without the simultaneous streaming options there will still be incentive (and TV rips) for people to translate it themselves.

If they're gonna go for simultaneous Blu-Ray releases, they should sell stuff which is recent and familiar to American audiences. Avalon and Cowboy Bebop fit the bill, but everything else will probably under-perform, even in a new format. I think Bandai E. still has it together more than Bandai V., since they chose to release GITS: Innocence on Blu Ray.

Read the news again... The list of blu-rays has nothing to do with simutaneous release plans... That list is stuff Bandai is releasing into the Japanese blu-ray rental market, and the news about the fall plans just was lumped into the same press release.
ANN maybe should make that clearer. Repeat: The only release that is specifically slated to be worldwide so far is FREEDOM. Nothing else is mentioned specifically.

only thing that would make me buy is if they add lossless audio for both Japanese and English audio tracks...

but i get the feeling Bandai Visual will use older DD 5.1 English audio from previous DVD releases which does not justify the price they charge....

It would be very nice if they would re-release those titles with sub. The ones i want the most are: Gundam CCA & F91 and Escaflowne the Movie.

Uh, what english audio? As I mentioned before, the list of shows like cowboy bebop have nothing to do with the worldwide releases planned. Those are the blu-ray discs that are already released in Japan (and didn't include the english track or subs, by the way), and are now available to rent IN JAPAN... It's two different pieces of news... Maybe you should clarify the write up, ANN editors? Because it's obviously confusing people...

I think releasing anime simultaneously is a fantastic idea. Sure, I don't see it bringing an end to illegal streaming/fan-subbing, but it will have it's advantages and perhaps decrease the amount of the forementioned activities. Besides, anything that means I don't have to wait months *cough*years*cough* for my favourite anime is a definite plus.

I predict PSP. Blu-Ray already supports PSP copies being placed on the disc.

PSP files can also play on computers. Then there's iPod files.

If they plan on going for Windows/Media Player only, they'll never see my money.

agreed, drm must die (the DMCA sould as well,) BV is like 2 year behind everyone else in this field it seems, just as itunes and other domestic services are removing DRM BV is saying they want more.

DRM does nothing to keep piracy down, it only hurts legit consumers who may not have the right DRM controls to use the content, or what is the authorzation server is taken down, what happens to the consumer then? DRM is "Defective By Design".

I'm not sure, but the latest thing in the audiobook market is an audiobook as a tiny iPod- I dunno if anyone has seen these things, if your local library stocks audiobooks they might have some. Essentially, it's digital audio in a tiny little plastic case, a little bigger then a cigarette lighter, with headphones attached. I can see someone basically changing the dimensions of the case and using it to play video as well. I'm not sure that it would work with downloads, though, because you'd need to get it onto the device, and that means some outlet which someone could use to take the stuff off, unless you could somehow make it a one-way connection.

I say they should use the same format as gonzo does with the crunchyroll download, decent avi with no drm and the only thing in the video is tracking software to keep someone from uploading the video to somewhere they are not suppose to.

But the .avi file was large prob due to it had to be compatible with Divxx. It wasn't an efficient download. The PSP and iPod files were efficient downloads and reach a lot of portable devices as well as computers.

your right that the avi file was large, about twice as large as a standard fansub avi file, but it was still not that big, you don't need divx to play it, if you use WMP you may need the divx codec, but everything else(VLC,zoom,MPC,TCMP) basically just about every player nowadays supports divx, there was no DRM at all, and the quality surpassed the psp/ipop download alot, and if its to big for you then burn it to a dvd, because there is no drm to stop you, dual layers are starting to run about $2 a disc now, or you can catch the single layer on sale lots of times as a buy 1 get 1 free and have plenty of those at less than 50 cents a disc. Size is the only problem( if it is even one) with gonzo's CR download, other than that it the most perfect one yet of the digital age.
