Wow...

Just wow.

I guess all manga is supposed to be hardcore.

I also feel the attack on the art is a bit unfounded.

Another thing is I think Vol.1 is the weakest of the volumes, simply because it has to introduce so much.

Wow, reviews for 3 of the titles I am currently collecting! Between this and the new anime season, I am just on cloud 9. Even if I do often use this column to figure out new series I want to collect (even though I really, REALLY shouldn't).

I'm quite sad to see Nodame rated so low (and given what a fan of the series you are, Carlo, I bet you're probably sad too). I have a lot of catching up to do with the Nodame manga (vol 9 should be arriving on my doorstep any day now) so I haven't read this volume yet, but I do know a fair amount about this arc because of watching the live action special, which I thought was quite fun. But I can see how it might not work quite as well with manga, with multiple competing storylines. But I still look forward to reading it, because it is Nodame!

And I have to agree that Ouran isn't as focused on club development lately. I have to wonder how long this manga is going to go and how much development it will get. One thing I've always felt is that if Haruhi ever actually did become romantically involved with anyone, it would really be a detriment to the series. I think the club dynamic works so much better without full-blown romance being added to the mix. Fan fiction can deal with that just nicely Smile

Welcome to the NHK 6 is also due to arrive in the mail for me any day now, so I can't really speak about it, especially since that latest volumes deviate a decent amount from the anime, which I have seen to completion.

Finally...Yotsuba&! is a series I have been thinking about looking into, because I do love Azumanga Daioh (and, on a side note, I had thought the mangaka was female but now I see that I was mistaken, crazy!). It still is on my list of things to eventually check out, but it might not be quite as high as it was (since my main reasons were because everyone seems to love it so much and once again, Azumanga Daioh being great...I wonder what the Reader's Choice reviewer thought about that one, if he/she's read it)

Well, I love Yotsuba, though I haven't picked up a new volume in a while, and, while I can accept someone not liking it, it would be nice if he made a convincing argument. Instead of just ranting, provide some at least seemingly rational evidence for your opinion. And even the worst piece of trash at least has something good about it, and you should examine the good points and show why they're not enough to save the book.
And, besides that, it is one of the only manga I can see as a sort of "all ages" titles, and it's a lot smarter than some of what's out there for kids.
Someone just doesn't get nonsense comedy. They're missing out.

It's strange; all of the "bad points" that he objected to... are "good points" in my eye. o_O Also, it's one of the most "human" manga I've read -- being that this is slice-of-life, that's a very important factor. Being a sixteen-year-old boy and discovering the very majestic beauty of raising children (none of my own, have you, but viewing options for when I'm old enough), and differences in human personality, well, I enjoy this manga very much. I guess that's why it's seinen -- for teen boys or grown men.

Haha... Japanese FPS players: more likely than you think. Among seiyuu (and the blogs that write about them), Ueda Kana is known (?) for being a Halo 3 player (addict, maybe?). She's supposed to be a decent enough player, too.

On the Yotsuba thing, maybe, just maybe, the people on ANN have learned to be a little bit calmer, unlike our friends on /a/. Or maybe all the diehard fans are out for dinner and will flame V. Kraetke to a crisp when they get back. In cruder language: inb4 a major atmospheric disturbance of bodily waste.

In any case, like marie-antoinette, the low rating for Nodame makes me an unhappy bunny. Is it possibly the lowest-rated volume of the manga that's been reviewed on RTO so far?

well it is kind of late, and I noticed alot of Yotsuba fans are in rage mode tonight (especially on 4chan) because of that section of the article, though I could be a little off there.

The /a/ thread on this Yotsuba review is hillarious.

I'll admit, this sounds much more true than I typically see of reviewers.

Well, I was quite taken aback by the Yotsuba&! review, especially when you gave Ouran a B (such a lame one).
Not that I'm a fan of Yotsuba&! or anything. The only impression I get is that your fanbase is quickly growing.

Yeah, nothing hurts quite like having to give a low grade to a personal favorite. But I guess it's because I expect a lot out of Nodame, and this one really wasn't meeting my expectations. 'Tis a shame.

Interesting point about the live-action special ... I was actually expecting to see spoiler[Nodame's Mozart concert] in Vol. 12, since I ended up watching ahead of where I was in the manga. But apparently 12 is so filler-y that the producers had to adapt stuff from further volumes (and that's the nice thing about screen adaptations sometimes, they take out the fluff).

*nods* Yeah, I would know in an instant. Usually the series ranks A's or B's in my reviews but this volume just didn't do it for me.

You do realize that the review for Yotsuba&! was NOT the same reviewer who did Ouran. Carlo is the regular reviewer and all the reviews except Yotsuba&! are by him. But the Reader's Choice section of the column is for people to send in reviews.

And yes, the best adaptations are the ones that find the problems in the source material and fix them, such as cutting out needless filler and moving on with the good stuff. To go back to the main series, rather than the special, I will always love spoiler[how they made Kiyora a main character from the get-go, because she is very important and it is a bit awkward just adding her in later on. Especially for someone who saw the live action first and just thinks of her as a student at the same school as everyone else because it seems so natural.]

I'm a fan of Azumanga Daioh, and I've been reading Yotsuba&!, and I can say that I don't feel like they're very similar at all to me, from format to focus. Yotsuba&! seems more focused on generally cuteness and quirkiness, rather than the laugh out loud, high school nostalgia humor of Azumanga Daioh. I find it fairly enjoyable, but I was pretty disappointed when I started reading and realized it just wasn't that fun. Plus, Yotsuba herself is a bit like a dumbed down version of Tomo--not a favorite character of mine. You'll still possibly like it if you like the non-comedic parts of Azumanga Daioh, but I personally don't think it's anywhere near as good.

I believe everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and I always find it funny when people go off the deep end when someone doesn't share their opinion. That said, you can mark me in the "Love" column when it comes to Yotsuba&! It definitely gets better after Volume 1, and I wish ADV would hurry up with Volume 6!

Seriously. Mine's been on backorder forever at TRSI. Vol. 5 made me laugh so hard I cried, but I was on an airplane, so I couldn't really laugh out loud, so I was sitting in my chair looking like I was having a seizure as I tried to hold it in. I literally had to put the book down and cover my face to get back under control. I really really want vol. 6!
