The year with my favorite anime of either the previous decade or the decade that I got into anime, justified by other good-to-great shows and movies that came out that year.
Obviously. |

It's really hard to beat the mid-aughts, especially 2006. It had this energy of being inspired by anime's past while also setting up so many ideas and tropes that would define anime for me.
Shows like Ouran High School Host Club, Kanon, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Code Geass, and Hellsing really came to define what made anime so unique to me in that era and other titles close to those years like Mushi-shi, Black Butler, Clannad, Gurren Lagann, K-On, and Soul Eater forming the basis of my anime tastes. My taste has broadened since then, but something about so many of the anime from that era just feels wild and unpredictable in a way that's hard to quantify. I still get that feeling with older and newer anime, but when I think back to the stuff I grew up with it seems like I could barely throw a stone without hitting an absolutely bonkers plotline that took me off guard. |

Despite writing 3 posts already, I forgot to say that I used to think 2017 was the best year ever. Why? It had several really great shows:
1. Girls Last Tour 2. Made in Abyss 3. Land of the Lustrous 4. Kobayashi's Dragon Maid 5. Little Witch Academia 6. March Comes in Like a Lion Season 2 7. Gabriel DropOut (of course!) 8. Saga of Tanya the Evil 9. Re:CREATORS 10. NEW GAME!! 11. Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju 12. Konosuba (its a classic now, despite being like, not really great ) So while 2004-2012 might have been the golden age of anime, since 2012 the best year is likely 2017. |

I'm also a fan of 2017. My top 10 would be:
1. Girls' Last Tour 2. Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju 3. Made in Abyss 4. Lu over the wall 5. Night is Short, Walk On Girl 6. Land of the Lustrous 7. Space Battleship Yamato 2022 8. Princess Principal 9. Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel I. presage flower 10. Napping Princess If Girls und Panzer das Finale ever finishes, it'll probably kick out Napping Princess. I rated the top 3 as masterpiece (which is unusual for me in one year), the two Masaaki Yuasa films as excellent (I highly recommend this Youtube video: The Year of Yuasa) and the rest as very good. My view of the Made in Abyss franchise is declining over time. I'm beginning to think it has an underlying nasty view of human nature. |

I kind of changed how I rate things mid-2015 so I only considered 2016 till 2023 for this, and I wanted to try and use averages. Using all-around averages provided by Anilist (every thing I watched and rated) it'd be 2023 with 25 finished and rated anime, but I feel like averaging out everything instead of the top isn't really how you'd think of a given year, so I had to go do manual averages
For my Top 10 of those years, it's actually 2016 with the better average, from In This Corner of the World at the top to Sweetness and Lightning at #10, including Concrete Revolutio, two planetarian entries, Durarara, Grimgar, Kizumonogatari, Mob Psycho 100 and Tamayura For a Top 5 and Top 3 however, I end up being basic like the rest of the thread and it's 2017, from Owarimonogatari at the top to Prisma Ilya Vow in the Snow at #5, including Just Because, Land of the Lustrous and Tsuredure Children But if I consider my ratings from before 2015 as well, then all the manual averages point to 2012, with Hyouka, Fate/Zero, Humanity Has Declined among others (Anilist's average would be 1997 with 2 anime rated that year). If I had the patience I might try to keep doing this for earlier years but going from an eyeball it doesn't seem like anything would surpass it |

I’ve seen post saying that the 2000s was the worst decade to be an anime fan in the United States and it might have something to do with 4kids. Remember people hated 4kids back in the 2000s because it was visibly antiquated even in its own era. So was 4kids the cause of why people said that the 2000s was the worst decade ever for the US anime industry?

@ mgree0032
I've merged your 2 topics as they're really the same thing. As an aside, the most common opinion expressed in this thread is the 2000s was the best decade, not the worst. But then, are you talking about the quality of anime (ie animation made in Japan)? Or the quality of the media by which it was available to consumers in the US (ie 4kids)? Oh, and I've updated the name of the thread. |

Macross DYRL & Locke have hilariously stilted English dubs made in Hong Kong & they are very funny to watch if you can find them. They were my first instance of buying anything with my own money |

Looking thought my Anilist with titles rated either 10.0 or 9.5, of which I have over 60 out of 1,030 anime I rated, they are distributed as follows:
1978-1995: 11 titles (of which only 4 are series and 7 are movies) 1995-2004: 22 titles (of which 17 are series) 2005-2014: 17 titles (all of which are series) 2015-2024: 15 titles (of which 14 are series) So, according to my tastes at least, it looks like the golden age of anime series began with Evangelion in 1995 and continues to this day (although 7 out of the 14 series from 2015-2024 that I rated equal or higher than 9.5 were released in 2017), as the drop from 17 series for both 1995-2004 and 2005-2014 to 14 series over 2015-2024 is not statistically significant. Looks like since late 1990s on average at least 1.5 great anime shows (according to my tastes) tend to be released per year: over 2023-2024 we had Frieren and Vinland Saga. While the golden age of anime movies was the age of Ghibli from 1984 to 2001, although I rate three non-Ghibli anime movies as 9.5. The earliest anime I rated 9.5 was Miyazaki's series Future Boy Conan released in 1978, the earliest I rated 10 was also Miyazaki's Nausicaa from 1984, and basically nearly all anime I rate highly released before 1995 was from Miyazaki and Takahata. It was true back in the mid 1990s that an animation critic reportedly said that if he made a top 10 anime Ghibli would take all the spots, but the reality today is different. |

Ha ha!
His actual rating was 65 points (presumably out of 100).
Takahata 's rating was only 30 - if the movie was that bad shouldn't they have fired the producer? N.b. I rated Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind Masterpiece. |

Miyazaki is extremely harsh. He once said that he only liked the movies he made.

Well, in this case it is Miyazaki and Takahata bashing their own work. |

I'll use my ANN rankings, so I'll only count my 10/10 anime (using a scale where masterpiece is 10 and worst ever is 0) as ANN doesn't allow for ½ points. I've scored 51 anime with a perfect 10 out of 1028 titles (about 5%). I'll break them into 5 year periods - I tend to lump the 80s, 90s, 00s etc together. 1976-1980: 1 out of 37 watched = 2.7% (see note A) 1981-1985: 1/60 = 1.7% 1986-1990: 1/118 = 0.8% (see note A) 1991-1995: 1/84 = 1.2% 1996-2000: 3/91 = 3.3% 2001-2005: 9/128 = 7.0% 2006-2010: 12/149 = 8.1% (see note B) 2011-2015: 9/135 = 6.7% 2016-2020: 9/108 = 8.3% (see note C) 2021-2025: 5/61 = 8.2% Note A: Rose of Versailles premiered on 10 October 1979, so is technically my oldest 10/10; however Anne of Green Gables began on 7 January 1979. I rate the latter's 50 episode TV series at 8/10, whereas I rate the 1989 movie compilation at 10/10. The compilation abridges the first 6 episodes with absolutely zero new animation. You could say that 10/10 belongs in the 1976-1980 period and become my oldest perfect score. Note B: I scored both the ONA and movie versions of Time of Eve as 10/10 which perhaps distorts the score. If you count them as 1 then the % is 7.4. Note C: I scored both In This Corner of the World and the significantly extended In This Corner (and Other Corners) of the World as 10/10. Again, if you count them as 1 then the % is 7.5. That means my best 5 year period, in terms of the % of anime getting 10/10 is either 2016-2020 or 2021-2025 and, thus the best decade is clearly 2016-2025, which caught me completely by surprise. I'd have said my favourite period was 2001-2010, as reflected in the amount of anime watched from that time. A possible explanation is I'm pickier about what I watch from the last 10 years, so I'm watching fewer mediocre or poor shows. I mean, I'd rather watch a crappy moe anime than a crappy isekai anime. Another is I've just had more time to watch mediocre anime from earlier periods. One thing that doesn't surprise me, is the drop off between 2011 and 2015. If you take away my 3 10/10s for 2011, then the remaining 4 years get 6/103, bringing the % to 5.8. I noticed it at the time. I blame it on a combination of the Asian Financial Crisis and the 2011 tsunami. Quite a few studios went under (so to speak) and the average production quality took a noticeable dive for a while. So, generally, I agree with Jose Cruz's thesis that we're in an ongoing golden age, although I reckon it began a little later and had a short-term dip. And, if you're wondering why my 1986-1990 totals are so high, you can blame my Beautiful Fighting Girls project, which I've paused from 1990. |
