@Blood-
I think it is because it is an extremely fun movie to watch. I know I got swept up in it for the duration of the movie. It was only after the fact that I had questions and saw plot holes. I doubt most reviewers worry about the science in science fiction. I also suspect that a lot of ordinary live action movies would likewise fall apart if you questioned the plot to closely.

I can understand why it would be so well received in Japan given the recent history it is referencing. I'm more curious about the reception in the West, both among anime fandom and general film critics.

But I think the wild, runaway critical and financial success of the film in Japan had a spill-over effect in the rest of the world. If it had made only a moderate splash there, I don't think it would have made the kind of waves it did in other places.
@ Alan45 - you don't have to sell me on the merits of the movie - I liked it. I'll buy a copy for sure (like I do for all Shinkai titles). It's just that, let's say I had been the first person to see the film before it was released and was asked, "Do you think this will be one of the most successful Japanese animated films of all time?" I probably would have said something like, "I doubt it."

I would have said No! shows I like are seldom popular (and I seldom like popular shows). That is why I'm so adamant that people should have faith in their own taste.

Lol I can't speak much for his other films; I only saw A Place Promised but I liked THIS way way better than that one.
I hear Garden of Words is good....but I've also heard Your Name is the only Shinkai film with a happy ending so seeing the others discourages me a little. xD
*hates tragic endings*

@Chiibi
That happy ending takes place in the last seconds of the show, after the credits. Almost like he hated to do it. A simple edit would remove it.

When someone's work is ALWAYS like that, it makes you wonder about his personal life. xD
Did a girl break his spirit for eternity or what?

I watched this for the first-time-ever, last night. And despite all the acclaim and accolades it's had since it came out, I actually had pretty low expectations going into it, as this was the only other viewing of a Makoto Shinkai project I've made the effort of seeing. The former being Voices of Distant Star (OAV), one-time only and over 20 years ago.
I remember barely caring about Voices, as I thought the idea was cool, but needed a little more screen time (than just 25 minutes) to fully flesh itself out. Then again, 20 years is a long time, and my sensibilities have changed a lot since then. That being said, your name. is pretty spectacular in comparison.
I'm sure I've seen these body-switching, slice of life, amnesic, and/or thread-of-fate elements in bits and pieces all over other movies and shows (both live-action and anime), but the art and execution were phenomenal. I didn't think anybody would be able to reach such a level of scenic beauty and bedazzlement as, say, a Studio Ghibli film. But holy moly, there was scenic porn galore in this! You can be sure I'll make a wallpaper album out all these backgrounds.
Story-wise, the whole transcendent bond thing was the kicker for me. Fate, reincarnation, karma, or whatever you wanna' call it is a very prominent theme in Eastern cultures. I see it every now and then via live-action movies and shows. But I think I hardly ever see it in anime, as over-the-top as they can be already, so that was a very pleasant surprise.
In the event that I actually have time to fully review this film, one day, I'm gonna' save the deep-dive analysis and just leave y'all with the acknowledgement that I *finally* saw it and really liked it. A definite 9/10 (Excellent), and probably an eventual bump up to 10/10 (Masterpiece) upon a re-watch in 4K.
Fun fact: the Japanese voice for the main guy (Taki) is the main guy (Shikishima) from Godzilla Minus One (2023). And he was pretty great in Minus One, too, which I also recommend.

Seeing all that sure brings back some memories, maybe I need to rewatch it one of these days.

And those are just background/scenery caps. It's insane how artistic this movie is. Whenever I get to the full review segments of each part, I'll focus on capturing the actual intimate/human moments of the art with character closeups. It's also unbelievable the budget for this movie was only about $7.5 million USD, and it ended up grossing $400 million worldwide.

Dude. You've only seen 2 Shinkai films in your entire life?
...
Dude. Well, let me tell ya, if you are into scenery porn, then Shinkai is your man and I envy you in that you have a whole bunch more stuff to check out that is going to make sweet, sweet love to your eyeballs. Have fun.
By the way, thanks for the reminder that I hadn't yet purchased a copy of Suzume yet. Just ordered the Blu-ray with 60 page artbook off of Amazon.

Congratulations on re-entering the Shinkai-Verse! I have been a fan since Voices, which really hit me emotionally, and is one show I could wish to be redone and maybe be expanded upon (no way Mikako would die in orbit and Nobaru is coming...) but artistically I couldn't imagine an artist like Shinkai doing that. I would recommend looking at The Place Promised in our Early Days, scenery was amazing and I think a fuller story than [your name].

Tony K. thanks to all those lovely screen shots you posted, I've been motivated to do something I've been meaning to do for years but never got around to: have a Shinkai-thon. Once Suzume arrives tomorrow, I will have all of his feature length films (plus Voices of a Distant Star and The Place Promised in our Early Days). I'll start with Voices and go in release order. Oh man, that's gonna be freakin' awesome...

@Blood-
I'll go Tony K. one further. Your Name is the only Shinkai show I've watched. If I had known what it was I likely wouldn't have watched it. As best I can tell from what I've read about Shinkai, he is the king of the three hanky weeper clothed in scenery porn. Real life is miserable enough. I do not need it in my entertainment.
