Quote: | Cietan Kitney, President of Visa Worldwide Japan, confirmed in December that while Visa wants to make its payment service available to legal and legitimate products and services as much as possible, it may sometimes decline purchases to "protect the brand." |
Protect the brand from what? Gooners?
This really does sound like some deliberate effort behind the scenes trying to pressure these companies with $$$ in order to get content they don't like off the internet. Still no idea who is behind this current wave, though.

Pretty much. It's pretty obvious what is happening, but why anybody cares is beyond me. How somebody else uses their credit card is about as far removed from the list of genuine things to worry about as it gets.

Nah, it was decades since the religious groups had this amount of authority over media. Most people calling for end of "Sex Sells" today are ironically antireligious as it comes.
Westerners hate this tend as well which is leading to Corpos massively losing money, and the trend had finally started to collapse in 2024. Hopefully it won't be much long before the corpos return to just selling what sells and stop using Twitter's echo chambers for market research.

That part's easy, they don't like it. Busybodies know that porn companies don't care about selling porn, so you attack the thing businesses need on an existential level and blame them for it. Saying "Visa makes a ton of money off of porn, including isn't that disgusting" is much simpler and more effective way to limit content than convincing a nation to change laws to target the businesses you don't like. Such people generally don't have enough going on if they are so concerned about people buying porn from across the ocean.

I especially hate when twitter echo chambers form a well oiled machine to harass companies for selling porn, just read the history section, the religious have nothing to do with it

I hope this was sarcasm(the juxtaposition is too on the nose) right? As the history section you're pointing to says three New York City clergymen founded the movement and a Catholic church guy was the face of the group. But we all know religious movement's have never been at the forefront of puritanical agenda's

Oops, wrong link, try this one?

All cheek aside, I have given my diatribe about this enough to where people don't want to hear it, said organizations have a history of convincing members to harass credit card companies into enforcing much stricter antipornography rules, I think that is most logically lead to Visa shutting down Japanese websites whether it was an internal decision to avoid future controversy or the direct result of harassment by such organizations.
It's hard not to gently tease the people who like to blame twitter or culture changing or leftists or "woke" as the issue when there is a well oiled harassment machine founded and run by Christians right over there who explicitly state it as their goal.

You're more hopeful than I am. I don't think it's going anywhere given how anti-sex Gen Alpha and Zoomers are and every hint of sex appeal garners so much backlash online. Even Japan seems to be more than willing to comply with this stuff. I've seen Korea and China pushing back against it more than I do Japanese companies these days. I'd love to be proven wrong though.

Is that why I’ve been seeing more uncensored Korean BLs from certain apps and uncensored physical releases of said Korean comics from Taiwan?
I don’t remember when was the last time I saw a fully uncensored manga released in English.

I know it's is a joke but I couldn't help notice that #Goonicide was the top trending tag on X recently. As silly as it is there does seem to be a really huge pushback against any kind of enjoyment of sexual content no matter how small or extreme. Even simply finding a fictional character attractive gets you labeled a "gooner" by people, let alone if a creator designs an attractive charactering the first place gets accusations of pandering to gooners. The fact that gooner even became a word people use in conversation in the first place kind of says a lot. So if a hardcore porn addict, a public sex pest, and a person who thinks a video game character is attractive are all given the same label of "gooner" then not wanting to associate with that stuff makes more sense.

If I had to guess it probably has to do with the Japanese market is becoming more and more reliant on the western market and in turn that means adopting their values and doing what the payment processors and marketing groups tell them to do.
Meanwhile the other East Asia markets are getting so competitive that they actually keep ramping up the sexual content in their games to stay ahead of their competitors. Azur Lane's been doing borderline porn recently to the point Apple and Google got upset and forced them to stop selling certain live 2D skins. But if you already have the skins you can keep them at least.

Well then, if I'm labeled 'gooner' for finding sexy anime illustrations/game characters attractive, then I'm going to wear that label with pride.
