If not for the potentially dire stakes involved, this whole affair would be almost hilarious in its incompetence. Like...what did this guy think would happen next? The entire military would get right in line behind him, the national assembly (in which his own party was a minority) would roll over and allow themselves to be disbanded, and the entire populace would buy his ridiculous assertions? It honestly feels like he was following the South Park underwear gnomes' business model and wound up square on the "???????" step.

Knowing at least some South Korean history, I wouldn't be too surprised if he DID believe that.

Well, that would explain why my post is gone even though my first half of it is just talking about my thought on the protest in South Korea, and mentioning some of the K-pop idols and people that are involved in the protest. But looks like I have to start over again, so here I go:

As a long time K-pop/K-drama/Hallyu fan, I've been watching this protests calling for impeachment of President Yoon since the failed martial law attempt. I never seen anything this mobilized since the 1987 June uprising (which was the last wide-scale protest in SK). I mean this protest is just I don't know what to say. But as a K-pop fan, I'm amazed that the protestors are using K-pop light sticks for this protest (yes, you read it right, K-pop light sticks are being used for this impeachment protests). It's not just webtoons/manhwa artists and illustrators that are getting involved, famous celebrities of South Korea including K-pop idols are also getting involved and political too, I'm made aware that Park-Chan Wook (the director of Oldboy) has also gotten involved and called on the ruling party to impeach President Yoon. One famous K-pop, IU (uh, think of her as South Korea's version of Taylor Swift) has take it further by providing the protestors with food and coffee. So yeah, this protest has gotten a lot of attention not only from international observers and mainstream media, but it's also gotten a lot of attention from K-pop fans around the world too.

But yeah, I've been following this impeachment protests since Yoon's attempt at martial law, and let say I've never seen this big mobilization of protestors in SK ever since I became a K-pop fan in 2013, it's just well I don't know what else to say but overall I'm just amazed and left a big impression on me. Nice to see ANN is reporting on this.

So do the laws there allow for the president to unilaterally declare martial law, or was this guy just trying to jedi mind trick his way into dictator-hood?

So, how often does impeachment happen in South Korea on the Federal level? I want to say one of the last few was impeached because of her being in a cult of some sort, or am I misremembering something else entirely?

I have to wonder if he wasn't a North Korea plant. Declare martial law, declare yourself president for life, then sign a treaty with North Korea giving them full control of South Korea.

I am still debating if this or Pedro Castillo's self coup d'etat was the most stupid.

Seeing how at least the some part of the police listened to Yoon for a couple of hours I am gonna say Castillo's was the best (most stupid) one.

Another thing that I find really funny it's how this situation it's practically carbon copy of what happened in Spain a couple of months ago, the difference being that Pedro Sanchez's followers did buy his BS "I love my wife" letter to the public.

To the best of my understanding, yes, but a huge caveat is that the legislature can overturn it with a vote. What appears to have happened was that he called for martial law after the assembly had released so that cops would block reentry into the assembly and prevent them from voting to break martial law.

Another aspect is that there are legally defined conditions to prompt imposition of martial law. Unsubstantiated claims that your opposition contains NK plants or sympathizers is not one of them. If anyone wants some entertainment, look up the multiple SK presidents that have been convicted of crimes after leaving office.
