Although one is a human and the other is a monster, they slowly begin to connect to one another. However, they run into various enemies...

Air Date & Platform:
October 3, 2024 (Thursday)
Available on: Crunchyroll

Episode Count / Runtime: Pending
----------------------------------

For the first half of the pilot episode, I was firmly convinced that this anime was going to be one of the ones I was likely to watch all the way to episode 12. After they moved beyond the village and introduced the surprisingly bland Lamia, I wasn't so sure. I was really digging the rural slice of life vibe, but the standard OP dude collects an adoring harem route isn't as promising.

It's not a deal breaker, mind you, but now the anime is going to have to prove it can do more than soullessly paint by the numbers if it wants one Edward J. Wald to stick around. If they make some unexpected swerves or develop the village side of things like “Farming Life in Another World,” it’s all good. If this just turns into a slightly higher quality version of “I’ve Somehow Gotten Stronger When I Made A Long Title Involving Farming Skills” then I’ll probably be hitting the eject button. Next two episodes will tell.

[EDIT: Fancy opener stuff added. -TK]

The first episode clicked for me. Something about a chill mc just enjoying a calm life (most of the time) and dealing with issues that crop up in a competent manner speaks to me. I hope it turns out like Chillin' in My 30s After Getting Fired in that there will be adventure and fighting but the core remains the calm village life with friends. I also like the painting like look of the art.

Yah, the Chillin in My 30's approach would be a compromise I could live with. That anime hit a lot of the common tropes, but it also took unexpected swerves, like having the MC marry in the first half and so on.

And yeah, the art was definitely a cut above standard. To be honest, there have been so many anime with great, distinctive art this season - Negative Positive Angler, Blue Box, The Stories of Girls Who Couldn't Be Magicians, and Dan Da Dan to name a few - that I didn't comment on it even though I probably would have in another season.

So this village is...interesting. Is the milk maid Tauro's mother? He has the same red hair as Airi's entire family. So is her dad two-timing with the dairy damsel (or one of her species) and cuckolding the soldier who only thinks he's Tauro's father?

I'm curious now to meet the nature goddess they worship, who Dolan is friends with.

Lots of things happen in a small village, some better of not being known. Good to see that Celina found a place to live even if it took a fair bit of work. I do get the village for being careful though, they do not have much in the way of defensive options and they do have a lot of preconceived notions.

Wow, they took the milk maid thing literally. I kept thinking about that song about milk shakes bringing all the boys to the yard during that scene, which I'm sure is one more sign that there's something wrong with me.

Anyway, I'm glad they integrated the Lamia into the village instead of making her a separate storyline, because I think the village is interesting too. It sounds like the demi-human make-up is culturally different from the imperial capital...I wonder if that's got something to do with why the silver haired female is there.

It does seem like ''the town is their home but annoying events force them to go adventure'' is going to be the major theme of the show. Most of episode 3 showed the cozy village life where everyone is living in harmony (and drinking a bit too much milk). Said harmony sadly did not last and that one magician looks shady as can be.

Yup, shady as can be meant evil witch in the end, she was dealt with pretty quickly though. Now the gang is heading back home just in time for a demon invasion to take place. Said invasion might make Dolan enlist at the academy since that little town sure has to deal with a lot of danger.

So I'm liking this show alright, but I do wish it had more surprises. I guess you could call a sweet natured lamia a surprise, but to me, she's a typical ditz sweetie plus a snake tail. The silver haired noble academy student is so reasonable, supportive, and loyal that it's not hard to predict what she will do or say. I'm not saying she would have to be bad to avoid being bland, but maybe give her some distinct dialogue, or a dry sense of humor, or a piercing intelligence, or an impulsive streak...something. The MC isn't much different in that regard. I wish they would play up the differences stemming from his dragon perspective more, and maybe the demon outbreak will draw some of that out. What I'm most interested in is still the weird little village, and they spend too much time away from it.

It's basically the opposite of Grieving Soul in a lot of ways. I think I'm still watching because I think something interesting could happen, but when I stopped to think about, I literally can't remember if I dropped the show or not.

The OP feels like it's from a completely different kind of show.

I like the balance between adventure and the peaceful town life. Plus, even when going on a dangerous quest to explore a forest filled with demons there is time to sit back and have fun. During said break I came to wonder how they classify monsters since it has become clear that a lot of them are in fact not hostile (or at least not the entire race). Finally, a rest in peace for that one pig, the quest to let them graze in the forest was not a good call.

I had to laugh when they're all "the forest air is so fresh and clean!" while they're leading their pigs in to shit all over it. Also, monsters or no, pigs aren't exactly herd animals like sheep, so they're bound to lose a few on such an excursion.

And the soldiers were totally useless. Ok, so the demon couldn't be predicted, but monsters like the tiger aren't unheard of, so why was the soldier peeing his pants over it?

I see Dolan has his shirts made out of stretchy Hulk blends. His skin, too, I guess, though I don't know why he felt the need to apologize to his parents since his transformation didn't seem to harm his human body in any way whatsoever.

I think it is because he has resolved himself to life as a human with the life that his parents have given him and transforming into a dragon does kind of go against that.

I think it's because he's going to have to eat his parents to clean the stain on his draconic dignity now that he's reawakened his dragon soul.

Well, maybe not. But yeah, I think he saw it as a rejection of his human legacy too.

Either way, I thought the anime picked up a little with the Ente Forest episode. Chris showed some signs of life, and Celina got to do more than be sweet and naive.
