It's great to see the quality continuing to hold through these episodes.

Wistoria is proof that tried and true storytelling can still work in this day and age. You don’t need to reinvent the wheel to make things interesting.

It's unfortunate they are already airing a recap this early into the show's run. So far the animation has really lived up to the manga's art. Hopefully that continues without staff being sacrificed in the process.

This is a pretty familiar fantasy story with all the usual beats, and definitely some riffs on the authors' DanMachi series, but there's phenomenal animation and a genuine sense of earnestness that just makes it so enjoyable.

I feel like they're definitely centering the main romance on WillxElfie but Colette just seems so likeable...even if that makes her losing all the more obvious.

I hear that has to do with Olympics programming rather than an internal delay.

As much as I would like to believe that, I doubt it. Why air a recap if they're being preempted by the Olympics instead of actually airing the Olympics in their time slot? Other shows being delayed for that reason are airing the Olympics instead.

An enjoyable watch, and probably more consistent, but so far I haven't seen any individual scenes that grabbed me as much as ones from Reign of the Seven Spellblades (as an example). I guess expecting a show to showcase a sense of wonder about magic when it's protagonist can't use it is unlikely, but I would like at least some scenes like the one where the Spellblade cast picked out their magic brooms.

the main reason i am watching the series is for the fact that danmachi's author fugino omori is the author for this one!

and speaking of danmachi, who here predicts that he might do a himoru awakawa (author for full metal alchemist) and have some of the danmachi eng dub cast in wistoria!? specifically, the dub VAs for bell, aiz and hestia?

cause after all, its kinda known that himoru asked that both vic mignonga and arron dismuke (orginal 2003 FMA VAs) to be casted in the anime adaptation for arslan senki in which she was adapting as a manga!

It's kind of funny that now that Sion is more of an underdog type character they introduce an even more snobby arrogant character in Julius who even has his own set of flunkies (because he's contractually obligated to have them). I can imagine they were probably also having some fun casting Tetsuya Kakihara as an ice mage on the same day as he's voicing Natsu. I guess there's also some irony that Will's latest rival is an ice mage like Elfaria.

Is there something going on with Earth Mages? They don't have an explicit seat in the Magia Vander but we see Colette using it.

I feel like we've kind of moved past the "oh woe is me, life is so hard for me and everyone judges me even though I'm secretly more powerful than 90% of them." Hopefully Will's performance in the Festival will completely dispel that.

Are we sure Will isn't half-dwarf? It would explain a lot.

Elfaria needs screentime stat because Colette asking Will out on a dungeon date and being his hype-man is just too cute.

Maybe they'll cover this later, but if the Magia Vander are responsible for maintaining the magic that holds up the fake sky shield keeping everyone alive, what's Will going to do if he actually becomes one? I get he's trying to challenge the preconception that magic is everything, but he's also aiming for the literal top mage position.

Doesn't the tower have support staff? (We've already seen the Watcher working with Elfie.). Couldn't he have kept his promise in a supporting position instead of Magia Vander specifically?

Maybe in the last few episodes they'll heel-turn, reveal that Will is actually the central antagonist of this show, and that his great plot is to, by becoming one, make sure the magia vander maintaining the sky are understaffed.

In all seriousness, though, we already know the end goal is not to maintain that barrier forever. There's a day of reckoning coming and the Magia Vander are looking for candidates to fight against the coming doom.

Fantastic animation, great action scenes. The story is fun so far. BUT, the writing is AWFUL. At one point a teacher outright say "In a world full of magic, he's the only warrior" to describe our main character.

Oh God.

But yeah, I am glad the people who like this have something they like.

As an Omori fan who's read all his novels but dropped the Wistoria manga after one volume and have found nothing nice to say about the anime so far...

The Wistoria prequel novel is pretty damn good!

It starts on their first day of magic school, aged ten, and goes through Elfaria leaving and Will establishing his current arrangement. (It doesn't cover meeting his roommate or getting a familiar, so we may see another prequel novel later on.)

Omori's certainly an author whose works are carried by the strength of his prose, and that's certainly a factor here, but the novel's timeline is just a far better place to start the story. He has to build the relationships the manga asks us to take for granted; Elfaria's actually in it, so their relationship is actually tangible instead of a vague motivation. Supporting cast members have minor roles here, but that still told me more about what makes them tick than the anime has. But most of all, we're far more inside Will's head, so his struggles are much easier to sympathize with.
