Ah yes, this one. It seems absolutely bonkers in a good way with rather impressive animation to boot.

Yup, the first episode was indeed in line with what was shown in the trailers: over the top in every way possible with lots of silly gags and absurd situations. The show is no masterpiece but it is amusing enough and it is hard to predict in what crazy direction they will go. Most of the gags got a laugh or at least a chuckle out of me so I will keep watching.

SHIKANOKO NOKONOKO KOSHITA-- SHUDDUP! I've heard it before, but I can see why people have drawn parallels between this and Nichijou. Actually, make that Nichijou and Lucky Star. It's the whole zany randomness coupled with the fourth-wall-breaking bit. Comedy is a risky genre. In many cases, gags (or bits) can either hit or miss, and the only thing you can do is just move on to the next one. That's fine, but as a whole series, if there are more misses than hits, then the show will end up being a miss too. There are a lot of elements that can make or break a gag/bit, and even if you can break them down into punchlines, timing, originality, relevance, etc., there's no consensus on which formula works. As for breaking the fourth wall, if you do it too often, it can get annoying. Just look at Deadpool; either you love it or you hate it. Even if this show is self-aware by pointing out its own clichés and tropes, it still means this show has clichés and tropes. A self-aware a-hole is still an a-hole, right? The other thing about breaking the fourth wall is the anime and RL references: Detective Conan, Tokyo Revengers, Higurashi, Tokyo Disneyland, Singapore's Merlion... well, finding Easter eggs can be fun, right? Like most comedies, all I want to see is how this show tries to keep it fresh in every episode. I don't know for sure, but I think this show is only one cour, so that is (usually) a good thing. Even Nichijou struggled at some point with its two-cour length. The whole "shika-shika" thing can get old really quick too—in fact, it already is—so I hope it brings something else to the table. Kyoto Animation became famous many years ago for pulling off this uniquely boke-tsukkomi comedy. Let's see how Wit Studio does it. |

I do have to say that the show is already a good case of effective marketing. Due to the trailers and especially that short dance bit the show was already popular before it even started. Now with all the memes and such it is only getting more attention.

Episode 1
I found it, I watched it, I loved it. The curious part is... I don't think of it as a gag show. What we see happen is what really is happening. We see Nokotan remove her head? We see her pull out an impossible level of deer crackers? We see an eldritch deer god in the form of a girl? We do because that how she do. Doe a deer. It's not zany randomness, it's chaos centered around a character; The character I would say that is closest to Nokotan is the Dodo from the old WB cartoon "Porky in Wackyland".... but in this show the Dodo knows where you live. And demands worship or at least an hour's worth of grooming once a day. |

Well....that happened, and I'm not sure why.
And I watched it happen...again, not really clear about why. And I'll probably watch it again next week? Maybe? I think? |

I larfed. This is definitely a wavelength show. By which I mean if you are on the wavelength its broadcast on, you'll probably enjoy but if you're not, it's probably torture. So far I seem to be receiving the signal just fine. Whether the wackiness can sustain or overstays its welcome remains to be seen.

Given episode 2 it really is a gag show where anything can happen and stupidity is always around the corner. This week we had the introduction of little sister Anko who is more than a little unhinged. What followed was a quiz mostly just to embarrass Toraki (a common theme in the show) and we got some deer lore with the deer god?
Anyway, I like the show for it being a dumb yet amusing time, people going in expecting more are probably not gonna leave happily. |

I agree with that. I had a particular moment of when she was entering the classroom I thought that obviously she won't fit, then thought that a good show would not let that actually get in the way and she should go in regardless of the damage it would cause. Which was immediately followed by her seemingly walking in with no resistance to herself as she destroyed the door and wall and debris hitting the smiling classmates, like she is the Juggernaut in deer girl form. It put a big smile on my face as I think the exact kind of humour that attunes to my wavelength, because damn logic other characters need to abide by when you have an anime deer girl that doesn't care whatever story the other characters want. |

When things like that start popping up you know a series is getting pretty popular. I also kind of like that version of the song...... |

Episode 2
Deer God! Or at least deer Jesus, kicking her out of Deer Heaven. I had the thought, that it reminds me of the show Sabagebu, another show that mixed comedy of anime high school girls and often over the top violence and wackiness. Also a similar feeling protagonist... with introduced this episode a younger girl who is way too obsessed with her. Although, the second episode did feel a bit narrow, as I think was mostly her going to the club room, finding it trashed, sees her sister, a challenge is issued, and a game is afoot. Certainly not a huge amount of plot. |

I had the same thought. Maybe a little bit of The Lies We All Tell too. Anyway, if walking the line between random stupidity and absurdist humor was a sobriety test, I'm not sure this anime would always pass it, but I'm enjoying it. I smiled a lot and I wasn't bored. |

I wonder, the PV's had a bit about a deer prophecy so there might actually be a main storyline at some point. I doubt things will ever feel serious though.

And thus the deer club is now complete. They may have no real goals (no good ones at least), the members may be quirky at best (Bashame is a sloth and not a deer) and an actual deer might invade (that was a fun bit) yet they do seem to be having a good time. Judging by the end that may change.
