Episode 9
Finally, Princess Bigguns is starting to get more of the screentime that the Royal Puppies deserve! My interest is... (wait for it) ... peaked. Yep, that's pretty much my report for the week.

I'm about 11% sure that I remember seeing that the title of next week's episode was "Leave it To Cleavage" out of the corner of my eye. That's obviously in regard to blade damage, and given that the princess has apparently mastered gravity defying magic, I'm expecting a lot from the confrontation.
On the plot development front, it looks like the scum priest who was trying to evict the orphans just became the avatar for a big bad...

That was what I considered at first but with the demons popping up again things ended up being quite different. I do wonder what the plan in teleporting the princess and Shin is though, there was no immediate trap/ambush sprung on them. Otherwise Schnee took care of business in the kindom in a rather brutal fashion.

I guess the cardinal wasn't the scum priest after all...so I'm not sure they're going to have time to tie that orphanage subplot back into whatever big move is being made here. The bad guys continue to be a fairly nebulous entity. Also, is the dragon guy going to reappear? They've got a couple of balls up in the air and not much time left.

It seems that if you want to know how that church subplot gets resolved you will need to read the novels, ditto for seeing dragon guy again. The final episode is very likely about clearing the horde of monsters heading to the city and joining up with Schee while doing so. Maybe also getting a clarification as to what the situation with Shin glowing and getting sucked to that monster was supposed to be. As for the episode itself....it had a lot of combat but man did it look goofy.

Yah, this episode was the first one where I got kind of bored.
Generally, the show's pretty enjoyable as its likable main character tries to figure out what the hell is going on, retracing his steps through a game that somehow became a real world 200 years ago. He meets characters who are tropes, but they generally have something distinct about them. Schnee has that Vulcan thing going on, y'know, lots of intense emotion kept tightly wrapped. Wilhelm looks and acts like a vampiric baddie, but he's actually a teddy bear.
This episode was set up last episode, so instead of introducing a new setting, it's all about watching the situation play out. The princess isn't unlikable, but she's a total trope fest and didn't do or say a single unexpected thing.. Bra breaking but not jaw breaking.
This put the pressure on the plot's execution, and the show's low budget and modest ambition really hurt it this time, at least for me. Generally, music can add tension in an episode like this. We got syntho cheese. The art can help build a mood. We got more still frames where the same pose got pasted onto slightly different bare bones backgrounds. Because I was bored, I made a game out of watching to see if the anime showed a single arm swing during all the sword fighting.
As to the mystery, it's a mystery without clues. I still have no idea why they were sent to the holy city, how it works, who sent them there, and what any of this accomplished. It just seems like an excuse hastily thrown together to try to make the princess a harem candidate.
Despite all that grousing, the next to last episode is often my least favorite in an anime season, and I'm still in for the finale. And as Smurky pointed out, I'm even hoping for a second season that might advance events a little further..

Episode 11
"Bra breaking but not jaw breaking." Hmmm.
*swishes cognac around snifter*
*lights up stogey*
I've decided. I like it. It doesn't quite make sense, but this is a mere quibble. Well played, sir.
Yeah, my least fave episode, too. And I'm a bit worried about the finale. Fighting an endless horde of monsters is always among my most yawn-inducing scenes. Betcha somebody says, "There's no end to them!" This title is starting to run out of steam for me but it went further than I expected so I'm not gonna kvetch too much.
Wait, wait, wait! Late breaking thought:
Bra popping, but not jaw dropping. Perfect! I can feel the waves of envy emanating from Shakespeare's grave...

Maybe jaw breaking is dated or an American idiom? It's mostly used to describe words that are hard to pronounce, but it can also mean that something was so unbearably exciting or surprising that mouths went wide open to the limit. I haven't heard it used that way in a good while though..
*Takes a sip of coffee. Tips top of folding laptop forward in acknowledgement or surrender.*
I have to admit that "bra popping but not jaw dropping" is much better.

I was thinking of making a joke about how they only had 500 Yen and some moldy cheese left to work with as the budget for the final episode. I decided against it but the animation or rather at times the utter lack thereof was pretty damn painful. It is sadly the biggest reason why I have trouble recommending the show. Not every anime needs to look stellar but man does The New Gate have many plain bad looking scenes in it. Most of the fights can not be taken seriously at all and there are so many blank looking faces.
There is value in watching the show thanks to the interesting premise of death game turning into real world. At the end it was hinted that other players are in said world and PKers also seem to be a thing. Add to that the concept of npc's turning into real people while retaining their memories from before and it is such a waste to see the abhorred production values make it such a hard thing to recommend.

Yeah, this show deserved better as it had a good concept and I think the pacing didn't do it any favors. If the reveals here were done earlier it would have helped but now any interested parties will either have to hope for an unlikely S2 to know where the plot goes from here or "read the manga!".

When they showed the line-up of soldiers the first time, all I could think was "Is this the blind regiment or something?" Then the next time we saw them, they all did have eyes popped wide, which just made me laugh at how stupid they looked.
I actually kind of liked this series, but I'm not totally sure what any of the main characters are supposed to look like, because they looked different in practically every scene in every episode. It's hard to even say they're off-model when it seems like there were no models to begin with. oO I have a hard enough time telling characters apart in the best of series, but honestly there were a few times when I was all "who is that?" only to realize "Oh, that's supposed to be Shin." Oy.

I thought the dropped hints of further developments were interesting.
Everything else I have to say, I've already said before. I probably liked this anime more than it deserved, but I did like it.

Episode 12
I ended up rating this as Decent which puts me solidly in Edjwald's "liking it more than I should" camp. Good lord the production values really were crap. The presence of other players and PKers is probably enough to lure me back for a second season if such a beast ever exists. And who the hell is Marino???
