Yatagarasu: The Raven Does Not Choose Its Master (TV) Source: Novel (ongoing @ 10 volumes, by Chisato Abe) Demographic: Seinen Animation Studio: Pierrot Genres: drama, fantasy Themes: aristocracy, conspiracy, historical, politics, power struggle, royalty, social disparity, transformations Plot Summary: Yamauchi is a fantastic world where the Yatagarasu live. Yukiya, a young Yatagarasu, is appointed as the personal attendant of the eccentric Crown Prince Wakamiya. Soon, he is entangled in a web of conspiracies attempting to overthrow the heir to the Imperial throne. Air Date & Platform: April 6, 2024 (Saturday) Available on: Crunchyroll Episode Count / Runtime: Pending ---------------------------------- Sounds like Wolf's Rain with crows meets Kingdom. Very interested in checking this out. Am also curious if Pierrot can maintain their recent trend of "way-better-than-I-thought-it'd-ever-be" production value. Episode 1-2
I initially didn't sample this because I was scared off by some of the comments in the Preview Guide. I got the impression that things were hard to follow and a bunch of names were being thrown at the viewer. Fortunately, my innate curiosity took over and I did check this out. Glad I did because I'm enjoying it. It's actually dead simple to follow and yes there's a chunk of names to keep track of but nothing too daunting. Naturally, I'm rooting for Sweet Girl Asebi to win the Crown Prince sweepstakes. Putta ring on it, Princey! There's a scheming Empress in the background and some dudes can turn into giant, three legged crows. What's not to love? |

I can't think of anything not to like either. I've been actively looking forward to this one, but somehow it slipped by me on whatever day it debuted, and I didn't realize it was out already. Now it's another new favorite. Lots of distinct characters and atmosphere. Well drawn, unpredictable, with good voice acting,

Y'know, this anime's only had one real fight - maybe two if you count a giant bird getting bodyslammed by some bodyguards - but the character driven tension and political infighting is as intense as most action anime. Plus, this anime's original world is handled so...I dunno...organically? Seamlessly? that it feels like a historical anime rather than a fantasy. Still awesome 3 episodes in IMHO.

Im also very much enjoying this one, but this is one of those that needed a dub. Not because it's bad or the best of the season, but because it's so dialogue-heavy, that it makes it easier for me to take in these more dense period dramas easier when they are flinging names around left and right.
Like, it's compelling stuff, but not the easiest to digest. |

In ANNouncements #161 regarding Yatagarasu, they ask why we aren't watching the show. I just wanted to say I am watching Yatagarasu and I love it. Every part of that show is so interesting and so well written. I love all genres of anime no matter what age group the target audience seems to be, but it is nice to have a show where adults look like adults and the plot line, or should I say plot lines, are filled with intrigue.
I agree that this show should have an English dub. I usually do not care one way or the other overall, but I can already hear some of my favorite voice actors playing these roles. Even without it, this is one of my favorite shows this season. |

Maybe they're referring to their rankings, however they work? I'm still digging it too, though it's not one of the ones I comment on regularly. I don't always watch this one as soon as it comes out because it and Tonari no Yokai come out later on Saturday than is convenient, and they also form a double hit of strong, semi-bitterness, kind of like dark chocolate. Which I prefer around 85% and with a bit of sea salt.
No idea what that implies metaphorically. |

Episode 12
Oh, my god, what a bombshell! I did NOT see that coming!!! Now what will the prince do? Maybe he can still marry that Southern assassin lady? Hamayu? This show is so damn interesting. I wish more people were watching and talking bout it. Cannot WAIT til next week! I think I read somewhere that there will be 20 episodes? Gives us plenty of time to tell the story. |

I'm withholding judgement until she answers for whatever she put in the letters. I was a bit taken aback by her casual classism ("what's the prob - he's just a hill raven") in how she used him. It seemed very out of character.
Likewise unsettling was the revelation that the "horses" are people who've had their third leg removed (which the art doesn't seem consistent about, so maybe I'm missing something). It also bothers me that they said they couldn't ID the intruder they killed in raven form. Ravens can tell people apart, so I imagine they can tell birds in their own flock apart. Are these shapeshifting creatures less discerning than actual birds? |

Not me over here getting whiplash from the many revelations dropped in this episode, lol. Looks like Asebi isn't all sweetness and apple pie after all, but like Gina said, will have to reserve judgment until we see what's written in those letters.
Wish we could get this show voted into the summer 2024 reviews, even if it's the last 4-5 episodes. |

Have to say that this series have been pleasantly surprising and is probably the one I enjoyed the most this season. It definetly started a bit slow but this last episodes things have been getting speed. Would be good to get the series last episodes cover as well.

To me this tied into the classism. The nobility spend all their time in human form, and shapeshifting in front of a court lady is considered scandalous. They never have to shapeshift because their needs are all taken care of. It’s associated with punishment and poverty, and being reduced to livestock. So I don’t think it was that the guards were necessarily unable to identify the intruder, they probably just determined he wasn’t part of a larger threat or conspiracy, so his identity didn’t matter, and they could just use him to paint a convenient picture to explain Samomo’s death. Since the nobles associate shapeshifting with lack of personhood anyway, they accept it. Asebi’s classism felt fitting to me for the same reason. It’s normal for her as a court raven to see hill ravens as animals, but she’s so naive and sheltered that she doesn’t understand the impropriety of what she did, or have any awareness of the casual cruelty in her attitude. In retrospect, you can see this aspect of her in how things played out with Samomo earlier in the series. |

I don't see what the big deal is myself. Asebi being an Oscar worthy, two-faced schemer capable of both character and literal assassination would make her a much stronger candidate for empress. Given what we've seen of the imperial court so far, If she really were a sweet, naive young romanticist, the wedding aisle might as well be a cattle chute.
Well, maybe I'm being a bit facetious there, but just a bit. I love this show, but in a lot of ways, it's an anti-romance. |

Lady Asebi, say it isn't so! And it probably isn't so. I have a hard time believing she actually is a baddie but mad props to the show if that's the way it goes. Anyway, consider me thoroughly riveted.
