In regards to the Dragon Quest news, I think the brand has been kind of mismanaged in the West for a very long time, desptie the moderate succcesses of some titles like VIII, IX and XI I think the series never managed to achieve a truly breakthrough hit moment like other JRPGs like Final Fantasy with VII and Persona with P5. I don't know if part of the problem has to do with DQ's more traditional RPG design, that it always had to compete with other titles in the same genre or the fact that Enix has never tried to push the series, I mean Nintendo themselves were the ones who bother to bring the original NES Tetralogy, IX and some of the remakes outside of Japan, not to mention all the publcity they gave to XI.
It's a bit concerning the fact that we haven't heard anything about the DQIII remake since its announcement, one would think that an HD-2D of a classic game that has already been remade two times before wouldn't have been that difficult, especually seeing how S-E has released other HD-2D games like Octopath Traveller 1 & 2, Triangle Strategy and the Live-A-Live remake, that means there's probably some development issues going on. As for DQXII, I don't know what Armor Project will do with this project, some people are worrying Enix is demandingArmor Prokect to reinvent the DQ series to better suit Western tastes, but I think those worries are unfounded. I more interested on the console the game is being developed for, unlike Final Fantasy, DQ never goes for the console with the most cutting edge technlogy, it usually releases on the most popular piece of hardware in the Japanese market, that's why IX released on the DS and why Enix made a version of XI for the 3DS. The Switch has become the most successful console in Japan, but at this point I don't know if Armor Project is developing DQXII for the Switch 2, or if they're planning to release the game on the PS5 in order to give the game a more prestigious appearance |

I regret I took people's word for it on this game for years. I played the Xbox version and had a great time - I'd honestly rank it very highly among most of the 3D Sonic games. It's not without a stumbling block or two (the mandatory Lost Impact find-the-things objective), but a whole lot less than I would've expected given the game's reputation. I feel like people have forgiven games for much worse. All the Shadowiness and guns made some people too hostile towards it, I guess - which, fine, whatever, but it's sort of disappointing how many descriptions of it out there are just outright wrong about the overall gameplay. |

I'm not really concerned with Dragon Quest XII considering the producers are more liaisons between Horii and SQEX with Horii doing what he feels like. DQXII being darker doesn't feel that odd considering Horii's been willing to go places. Hell, he was all for keeping Crono dead in Chrono Trigger but got vetoed at the time. It's why I always laugh when people try to act like Horii is wholesome when in fact he's got a slyly twisted mindset as all good storytellers do.

Year of the Shadow will work better because Shadow is so infinitely memeable. Luigi is iconic and I love him in many games, but he doesn't have a set personality outside of some general characteristics. The way he acts in Paper Mario versus Luigi's Mansion for example, both work as interpretations of Luigi but he doesn't really have one set vibe besides being the little brother. Meanwhile Shadow is so iconic and interesting as a personality, and not just as a visually recognizable guy like Luigi. Shadow's personality has taken different tones over the years but he's come out of it with a distinct flavor that lets him motivate kids, be an anti-hero, and have an iconic design all at the same
Plus, lately everyone loves having a villain era where they worry about what's important to them and stop degrading their own needs and wants, he's the hero we need now |

Cautiously optimistic about DQXII. After games like Tales of Arise and Final Fantasy 16 which were also the 'we want to be a dark, Game of Thrones-y RPG now" I'm not exactly excited. The lighthearted aspect I feel is especially important to Dragon Quest than Tales or Final Fantasy.

Just so you know, I find this take very interesting since I only know of this game through memes and its reputation. I would like to play now, but emulation is unfortunately the only way to go at this point. Also, talking about memes: https://youtu.be/eZrXAWLyeRg?feature=shared Legendary TV show. |
