A B- for animation? Wow, this must look way better than the previous Rascal anime. Even the previous movie had terrible animation.

"Terrible" animation? Where? It certainly looked very underwhelming for a movie production, but I do not see at all anything about it that can be even remotely considered "terrible".

Agreed, I would go for good enough, at the worst decent, truly terrible animation is something else. Also, it will be weird to see more of this anime and not have a supernatural mystery going on.

The Kaede storyline was great because of how - whether intentional or not - it absolutely destroyed the "little sister incest" fantasy in anime. For a good bit of the show it did actually play with the common tropes, but did so with a big brother and little sister that have deep emotional, psychological, mental, developmental and - in the case of the Sakuta's scar - physical problems. Sakuta was a bitter, cynical loner who at the beginning of the show was "in love" with a girl that a lot of people were convinced only existed in his head. Kaede was a teenager that was exhibiting the intellectual and emotional maturity of a 7 year old, and a terrified antisocial one at that instead of a precocious one like Naru in Barakamon. It was perfect for a "still like the little sister incest anime jokes you creepy jerks?!" deal.

And then she had the best line/moment of the show. After spending the entire show to that point depicted as being jealous/competitive/in delusional denial of the females around her brother - though the show left it open as to whether the true cause was a fear of being abandoned - out of the blue she decides all on her own "if I don't get over being a hikkimori my big brother be stuck taking care of me and he will never get married and be happy" and then she gets better shortly after. Of course, not the most accurate depiction of a resolution of severe mental health issues - though it is hard to complain about this in a show whose early arcs included a Schrodinger's cat scenario playing out in real life - but still mighty entertaining.

That alone is more than enough reason for me to get my hands on this when I am able to and see the rest of Kaede's arc play out.

Having read this novel and the following volume, I'm honestly surprised they didn't release the two together, as they definitely work better together. But yeah, imo, Sister Venturing Out and Knapsack Child are absolutely essential to the story in terms of wrapping up loose ends. They actually also set up the next arc, but I'd go as far as saying that with these two films we get the end of "Part 1"

What 2D anime movies have worse animation? It's the worst I've seen, personally.

Awesome review. When can North American audiences expect to see this in an actual theater?

'Terrible animation for a movie' and 'terrible animation in general' are not the same thing.

These 2 movies are a mixed bag, the reviewer is incorrect about the sister not venturing out, not introducing new characters.. 2 of them are to be exact. Well 1 in person and 1 first gets mentioned by name.

I am surprised that this was turned into a movie, as neither really has enough substance to support it. And yet even so much was left on the cutting room floor, but I think overall that is a good thing.

The purpose of these 2 volumes is to wrap the first half of the novels up, and to lay the foundations for the upcoming University Arc as you are introduce to just about all of the "Heroines" to be featured moving forward.

At the end of Knapsack Kid, they do announce they are animating the University Arc.
