Even considering FuniRoll stopped actively getting the newer Hosoda movies for whatever reason this seems pretty surprising since they did give the 'original' four some decently nice releases and they're all well known and popular movies. GKIDS really just is the GOAT for anime movies, aren't they?

Just letting you all know that Crunchyroll is streaming all of those movies except Summer Wars. I believe they will remove Wolf Children soon enough, then remove the other two at a later date.

I saw the news earlier today, and I have question to ask regarding the license acquisition:

Will GKid's keep the dub done by Funimation? Or are they going to record a new English dub using celebrity actors? If they are going to do a new dub, will GKids allow to have Funimation dub included as an option alongside any potential future new re-dub for the 4 films?

Indeed. The only one's I think can touch them is Discotek and that's only because they have great 4K and regular Blu-ray discs. If only they did theatrical releases.

Curious if there's anything worth buying new discs for.

Were there any Japanese extras that Funimation didn't get? I know Bandai had a bunch for Girl Who Leapt Through Time and they were on bonus DVDs in both Blu-ray & LE DVD releases. I still own the former.

That's good, I had noticed the earlier Hosoda films had gotten harder to find for a normal price. It'll be nice to have them all widely available again.

I own all of these in Region 2 BD discs.

Is this an American thing, were they somehow not released there or is this just a license save and reprint?

Funimation had them last and their licenses expired.

GKids had been getting Hosoda's latest films since Mirai and this was somewhat expected since they started rescuing other non-Miyazaki titles themselves like Evangelion & 5 Centimeters per Second.

Meh, nothing special. Just basic re releases of the four Hosoda films. Nothing will change, just like when Gkids acquired the licenses to the Ghibli films. Same video, DUB and everything else.

I have 3 out of 4 of those already, and Funimation gave them pretty nice releases. I'm happy if it means they get wider streaming releases though, as Summer Wars is probably my favorite film of all time.

Why would GKids redub them? They never redubbed any previous anime movies they’ve rescued licensed and they’ve released plenty of anime dubs that are primarily dub actors and not celebrities. I would say the majority of their anime movie dubs use voice actors and it’s only their Ghibli releases that still use mostly celebrities.

^And the ones with "celebrity" voice actors were done by Disney originally anyway.

And I want to remind people that before Disney dubbed Ghibli films, there were 3 Ghibli films that were previously dubbed by Streamline Pictures: Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro (here's a weird but cool fact: Troma Entertainment, yes the same Troma distributed My Neighbor Totoro back in the old days before Disney and GKids) and Kiki's Delivery Service. All 3 of them had previous English dub and were not done by celebrities, but by voice actors that dub anime for Streamline Pictures and Harmony Gold.

My point is that because of Mamoru Hosoda's high-profile status in the US and the fact that Mirai, and Belle had received a top-notch celebrities cast for the English dub for the last 2 films, I can't help but think that GKids may try to have a new English dub for Summer Wars, Wolf Children, & The Boy and the Beast. I don't know if it will applied for The Girl who Leapt Through Time given that particular film's dub had Emily Hirst voiced the main character which sort of count as a celebrity cast, although that dub was done by Canada's Ocean Group which operate differently from Hollywood.

The Boy and the Heron, the first Miyazaki dub in GKIDS history, has celebrity VAs.

Makoto Shinkai is a bigger name than Hosoda and GKids never redubbed any of the Shinkai films they rescued licensed that had older dubs.

The Japanese version of most Ghibli films also used Japanese celebrity actors and not many anime seiyuu.
