I was gonna shit on this news until I read that Kishimoto himself will be collabing the writing and direction.
That's great. Otherwise, even if Shang-Chi was really good, most of these greedy hollywood directors, or worse, cheap unknown ones easily ruin adaptations with their stupid vision by changing the source material somehow or another. |

Shang-Chi wasn't about world-building like Naruto. But anyway, LG needs something after The Hunger Games and John Wick, seeing as no one saw Margaret and Joy Ride. Also, who's betting that this is all because of the Netflix Airbender and One Piece, even if LG had the Naruto rights before those two? Also, funny that they hated on the live-action GITS, but are ripping off the latter's use of creator endorsements for One Piece and Naruto. Oh, and the live-action OP also white-washed Nami, but no one raised a fuss.

Expecting this to be mediocre or outright bad.

If this was to be simply an adaptation of the Zabuza Arc, with maybe some small hints towards to larger plot (like maybe changing things so that Zabuza has some direct connection to Orochimaru, or something), then I think this could have the potential to at least be a solid standalone film that could potentially be the start of an entire film franchise.
Unfortunately, I don't think Hollywood is capable of that kind of safe, patient execution anymore. Even with Kishimoto apparently on board, should this actually get made I kind of expect it to try jumping ahead ASAP into the stuff with Orochimaru, because that's what people want. |

What the hell are you talking about? The casting for the straw hats was based on Oda's SBS answer, where they would be from if they lived in real life. |

Exactly. OP had the benefit of having Oda as an executive producer. I doubt Kishimoto will have any part in this movie except “creative consultant.” We saw how well that role went with Bebop and Ghost in the Shell. |

I’m disappointed they switched directors if only because Michael Gracey, the previous one, was adamant he would not begin filming unless Kishimoto signed off on the script. I have no idea if Cretton will agree to such a deal

We are talking about fiction writing here. Oda isn't required to follow real-world naming conventions. Despite the name, Oda officially considers Nami to be the equivalent of Swedish, not Japanese. |

I believe it when I see a trailer and the last thing anyone should be excited about is an Avi Arad production, who remains as the producer. Arad did Venom 1-3, Morbius and Kraven but not Madam Webb. Even he knew, lol.
Hollywood should get back to doing Gantz. That can absolutely work as 50+ million hard R self-contained film. It can even have its own plot. Naruto on the other hand is harder to do than even late-stage One Piece. |

Whatever happened to those redrawn episodes that were supposed to be released for the anniversary of the franchise. That's what I want to see, I'm tired of all these live action takes ruining otherwise solid IPs.
First DC and Marvel tried to make every comic into a live action adaptation, and now that the well has run dry, Hollywood wants to take big name anime's and make them live action. Just stop! Some things are always going to look corny when you try to present them in live action. Does anyone remember Dragon Ball evolution! |

I’m still not sure if Naruto can translate well unless they age up the characters, but after One Piece I’m willing to give it a shot. Destin Daniel Cretin is a great choice, I’ve liked most of his films, and they’ll most likely be able to nail the fight sequences, but I’d feel more confident if it was a TV Streaming Series. Unless it’s adapting the Zabuza and Haku arc I’m not sure if they’ll be able to do it as most arcs are too long to be able to do in a movie.

The article does state that Masashi Kishimoto is co-writing the film's script. There's a good chance that it will be faithful to the manga. |

Nami and Tashigi have Japanese names but it´s clear to see which one is supposed to represent Japan by just reading the introductory chapters. No one needs to read Oda´s SBS segments to pick out the descendants of Wano. They might as well carry a neon sign with a rising sun on it even if Zoro´s names are from Spain and France.
No studio will allow a comic author to write a script for a blockbuster. Christopher Yost is the only person I know who got to do that. Even esteemed novelists are barely allowed to do that. A known rapist or manslaughter will have an easier time to get a gig in Hollywood. Let´s not even consider the thought that Kishimoto is a foreigner without any known knowledge of writing in English. He would be lucky to share a "story" credit, at best, but he could become an executive producer. THE most nebulous credit of them all but you at least get paid! Lastly, never trust a press release that has a connection to Avi Arad. A miracle that he survived those Sony leaks. His next victims: Borderlands and then Zelda. This is common misinformation I see get repeated a lot. Oda's SBS answers were not meant to be about their race or casting, but a lighthearted joke about stereotypes based on what the characters represented. Franky likes Cola and wears Hawaiian shirts so he was American, Chopper was a reindeer so he's Canadian, Luffy is made of rubber and most of the world's rubber supply comes from Brazil, Robin is a spy so she's Russian, etc.
Also note many of the actual casting did not reflect these nationalities. Oda also changed his answer in a later art piece so why do people always flock to the random SBS jokes and not the actual official art and later answers he gave? Please need to stop taking some joking answers in an SBS as gospel truth, let alone what Oda "officially considers" the characters to be. That being said, an all-Asian cast for Naruto would be nice to see. I wonder if such a thing is possible from a western adaption. |
