I guess I'll say it: This game is actually pretty legit. I gave it a chance and I'm surprised by how much fun I've had with it.

I'd had it set to Auto-Ignore like everyone else until I ran into this thread, which explains what the game is trying to do:

A big part of it (which weirdly seems to get ignored in a lot of reviews) is how it borrows the Dissidia Final Fantasy system of "attacks that build meter (but no damage)/attacks that do damage based on that meter". It adds an interesting degree of strategy, since you have to keep making judgment calls on which is more beneficial to go for (although the basic attack has a "little bit of each" option which makes it easier to adjust to). This is along with coordinating with your partner doing the same.

Yeah, the game is definitely not the best looking and the single player story mode sucks. No getting around that, and Bandai Namco should've provided more support on that end I think. There's also some dumb QoL mishaps, like rematching being broken and throwing you in with CPUs if everyone doesn't do it rather than cancelling. It's also got, uhhh, Anime Accurate Balance, for better or worse (I'm really surprised this review singles out Geto rather than Gojo & Sukuna).

But, there's a clever take on the Gundam VS/Dissidia format in there. Admittedly, not for everyone at full price, but it's too bad to see it get written off as something more generic everywhere.

Well shit that is odd. Not that Geto doesn’t have shades of brokeness in the source.

Ironically, that's the biggest problem of the game - asking the full price for it and the release timing, cause Bamco management just went full stupid and threw it straight under the bus with the same date as Persona 3 Reload and Granblue Relink without any real stuff to promote it at all, while expecting at least KnY game sales numbers from it only based on the JJK hotness on the market.

I tend to think the broken aspect of characters in a game like this is sort of acknowledging that it is primarily targeted at fans that are ok, if not outright prefer, that the balancing follows the material. I remember doing things like playing Tenkaichi with another person where if you picked, say, Gogeta then you couldn't have any other team members because he would easily trounce anyone else. Then again, that is something that worked when you could only play with somebody next to you. With online, there is a chance that a character like Sukuna maybe gets shadow banned because nobody wants to play against him, or have the opposite where everyone picks him.

The main issue is that these kinds of games that I have is that it's basically the same thing, regardless of what anime it is based on.

It’s all well and good until you take this bullshit online with other human players.

I remember the horror of Deidara in Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 and Minato in 3.

Wish they would have kept it to the MHA One Justice 2 formula, spent over 100 hours getting the platinum in that game. This JJK one will definitely not even reach a quarter of that playtime.

Vehemently disagree with this take, while the games are all "anime" inspired its doubtful it was thrown under the bus and over shadowed by other games...Granblue Fantasy Relink is limited in that it only appeals to people who already play the browser game (the Relink includes rewards for the browser game), people who were were captured by Versus Rising, or just people who had a passing interest, the game only getting 1 million worldwide so far kind of attests that the appeal was limited. P3R is just a turn based jrpg and people have been raging against turn based games, its not clear that P3R would keep people from getting JJK...and also people are turned off since P3R is a step backwards (in their eyes) mechanistically from P5.

Anyway, next on the fighter list is the HxH game, and it is continually unclear why Tekken, SF, MK, and BB devs dont ever get interested in doing more anime properties.

Would people really want NetherRealms working on an anime game?

The thing is - anime fighters too have a very limited auditory because core FGC (which play GG, SF, or Tekken, for example) usually ignore anime arena fighters existence completely, and the sales simply rely on the anime gamers community - and when you throw it straight to the competition where that auditory is supposed to choose between three full-priced projects, they go for better and more polished ones.

And then you get JJK: Cursed Clash, which despite being at the peak of marketing promotion with the anime and pretty much-known franchise both in Japan and the Western market (unlike GBF - which is not much known in the West outside of avid gacha gamers, for example), screwed up so badly with sales that below it only can be a real flop that was Naruto x Boruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections - and even it's abysmal sales solely relied on platform on which it's competitors just not exist.

Quote:

The real thing - the Steam version, which is the major driver of Relink sales, includes no reward codes at all. So nope, that's not the actual appeal of the game either.
