I'm really enjoying the books so far. I have been wanting to read the novels for a while but haven't so the audiobooks are heaven sent as that's my primary reading source now.
It's so stupid though how Seven Seas handles the audiobooks. Yen has been so much better. I primarily use Audible but the third volume is still yet to be released on the platform. The release date for the fourth is just around the corner and the third is available everywhere BUT Audible. Ugh. I hope Seven Seas get their act together because the way they handle audiobooks is really hindering the releases.

Yeah, I agree. I listened to both volumes one and two on Audible and would love to listen to the next one, but it’s not yet on the service, I don’t use any of the other services on which it’s already available. I have an audible credit sitting waiting for the moment the third audiobook appears! I also see that audiobooks four and five now have release dates in the very near future but Audible doesn’t even seem to know they exist.
I wonder what the issue is? Sort it out, Seven Seas!

This sounds like series that could be fun listening to after I catch up on Saints power is omnipotent and Full Metal Panic. Well Audible is being dumb with the fact that they have volume 6 for Saint not 5 even though Its already out.

I just looked this up and you’re close! They have volume 7 up but not 5 & 6!! I sent an email via their website contact regarding Villainess but I really wish there was a way of finding out what’s going on. I hope someone from ANN is seeing this and willing to help with an investigation report.

I mean judging from tons of other isekai where male leads act way worse than Rae that are still popular, they absolutely would. Look at how big Mushoku Tensei is and the protagonist is infinitely more toxic than Rae. I'm kind of tired of the "they wouldn't put up with x if it was a male character!!!!" statement, when there are tons of examples than anime fans in particular absolutely would? Like at least we know Rae would never buy a slave.
If anything, I think yuri fans and queer fans are more critical of Rae than the average anime fan would be because people who are here for queer stuff aren't necessarily okay with tropes that are almost inescapable in isekai power fantasies. And I think that's fine, I'm the same and believe it's good to critique those tropes, but it's a weird representation to say it's the opposite.
Edit: oh wait, I remember who you are and the last review of yours I interacted with now. okay never mind, not interested in a discussion with you about queer media especially, I'll just leave my point up for other people who might be interested.

Call me a nitpicker, but yeahhh, this sentence rubs me the wrong way. I’ve seen too many toxic AniTwitter users saying pretty much the same thing about other characters in other series, in regards to this trope and others (like male/female-on-female/male violence).
I think it’s an unfair statement in general. I feel that there’s been as much criticism (or at least eye-rolling) around the “predatory lesbian” as there has been around “that one perverted guy in every ensemble cast,” a la Sanji from OP, or the “possessive touchy-feely boyfriend,” like Sasaki from Sasaki and Miyano (to clarify, the discourse around Sasaki was just the first example that came to mind; I’m not particularly one way or another about how overbearing Sasaki really is).
I think it’s also an unnecessary concern. Will the reviewer’s appreciation of Rae change depending on what gender/sex she is? Why does the reviewer care that the audience may see Rae differently depending on what gender/sex she is? In the first place, why does the reviewer think that readers appreciate Rae’s “toxicity”? This concern feels more of a reflection of the reviewer rather than of the work itself (and seems rather catty, too).
(Anyway, I appreciate I’m in Love with the Villaness’ dive into how society affects our view on and actions surrounding LGBTQ+ relationships. All this (my) talk about “what-if-Rae-had-been-a-guy” has also piqued my interest; if anyone knows of a work — preferably a manga — that examines how society affects the stereotypical male approach to heterosexual relationships, please let me know.)
