Thanks for the review Smile

I loved the previous LaD game (Yakuza 7), not just for the turn based combat and story (that ending!), but also because it featured a new protagonist.
I've only played 0 and 1 before, so getting a fresh start was a big draw for me in 7.

I was a bit annoyed to see them bring back Kiryu again for 8 and have less focus on Ichiban, so I have to ask, having not played 2-6 or the recent Gaiden game, am I going to be missing out on a lot with this game?

You'll be missing out on some context but that's about it. The Yakuza games have always told self contained stories with just a few recurring characters tying them together. Anything you need to know will usually be explained in the same game.

Hoo... that is some high praise. I'm a little skeptical, myself. I have a hard time imagining it topping LAD7/YLAD, or even equaling, that game was just so good and so refreshing, tackling such uncommon themes for the medium.

Also, just in case anyone didn't notice, preloads went live today.

To be fair, LAD7 wasn't entirely a clean break from the prior games, itself, so there was definitely some context you already missed out on without noticing. As for LAD8... I wouldn't worry about it. Anything that's important for you to know will also be important for Ichiban to know, so if nothing else you'll be sharing the same perspective as the protagonist.

I wonder if Kiryu dies for real or it's just his third fake death (you have competition Char and Kira). Then again, giving him Cancer seems one of the worst moves ever like what happened to Thor Love and Thunder

At least Love and Thunder was carrying over something from the texts. Which was Jane having cancer though unlike the comics Jane didn’t come back to life after succumbing to her cancer.

The only way Kiryu having cancer would be bad is if Kiryu cheated death (as usual) by surviving it. The guy have survived being shot, stabbed, & nearly blown up at a certain point it gets beyond absurd to keep him around to keep avoiding death in the most ass pulley ways.

Kiryu has lung cancer right? That's super survivable. My uncle was pretty frail and about 66 when he got it, and he lived another few decades. I'm literally going through chemo for colon cancer right now but fully expected to survive and I had it at stage 3 (likely early and I'm pretty young but still).

I kind of dipped out of Yakuza after Nagoshi and Sato left Sega. I'm not very confident in the future of the series without them. I did not enjoy Like a Dragon very much both gameplay wise and narratively and hearing some of the things about this game like the micro-transaction scandal with features like New Game+ really does not alleviate my misgivings things are heading in a better direction. I guess all the talk of letting Kiryu's story end with Nagoshi's departure did not age very well.

Nagoshi leaving Sega might really explain why they made Gaiden as another action game rather than try the third Judgment. Nagoshi was the one who came up with most of the plot from Judgment and Lost Judgment especially the idea of having Kimura as Yagami as a new lead. Still, all that controversy about the agency despite the ports might explain why the team made Gaiden instead of Judgment 3. A shame. Seems a lot of wasted potential since the cop drama of the Judgment had its own atmosphere when compared with the style of Yakuza/Like a Dragon.
