Looks like Miyazaki might do it again. I'm honestly surprised The Super Mario Bros. Movie got snubbed though. I was sure it would make it in.

It's a video game movie, and not the biggest movie of the year, nor the most well reviewed. So I'm not surprised. If anything was denied that deserved it, it was Suzume. But the voters hate non-Ghibli anime, so...

Looks like Miyazaki has a shot for another stealth lifetime achievement award using his worst movie as a vessel.

I hope The Boy and The Heron will win! Out of the nominees, Spider-Man probably has the edge, though, but we'll see. I've heard so much praise for the movie, so maybe this will be the year for anime.

I have seen all of the animated movies nominated, except for Robot Dreams, which I haven't heard anything about it. I'd say that both Across the Spider-Verse and The Boy and the Heron have a good chance of winning the award. I think I enjoyed Spider-Verse 2 a bit more, but Boy and Heron has some beautiful animation, while the story is kind of confusing (but not as much as people say), I think Miyazaki has a better chance of winning because of the legacy of his career, which has become bigger over the years, while Spider-Verse has the problem of the movie ending in a cliffhanger and since it's a sequel, it didn't have the same impact as the first one. Nimona is actually a pretty good movie as well, while I found Elemental just OK, it wasn't as good as previous Pixar movies like Soul and Turning Red, but it was better than Luca.
Though, no matter if the Oscar goes to Spider-Verse 2 or Boy and Heron, it'll be an award for Emilio Treviño since he voiced both Miles Morales and Mahito in the Neutral Spanish dubs for both movies
While I enjoyed The Mario Bros. Movie and I don't think it's Oscar material, however we have to remember that the Academy nominated the Jimmy Neutron movie and Shark Tale years ago, so I think it might have had a chance. I'm actually kind of sad that TMNT Mutant Mayhem didn't got nominated, but I think the Academy probably thought that very toyetic movie didn't deserved it, kind of like how The LEGO Movie didn't got nominated despite having great reviews back in 2015 |

I see Boy and the Heron winning if for no other reason than the Oscars don’t usually give the middle trilogy film an Oscar, even in the category that they widely defer to their kids on.

Another thing to consider is that this is, supposedly, Miyazaki’s final film, the first Spider-Verse won Best Animated Feature at the 91st Academy Awards, and there’s going to be a third Spider-Verse movie. I could see The Boy and the Heron Winning because, 1 it won the Golden Globe, 2 they already gave the first Spider-Verse movie best picture, and there’s another movie coming out for it, and 3 this is Miyazaki’s last film. I could totally see the academy member being , we already gave Spider-Verse Best Picture and there’s going to be one more movie, but this is Miyazaki’s last movie and we’ve only ever given 1 of his films the award, we should give it to him now, because it's our last chance to honor him.

I'm just cackling at the fact that, on Disney's 100th Anniversary no less, Wish got snubbed for Best Animated Feature, while Nimona, the film Disney tried to erase because of its LGBTQ+ themes, gets nominated instead.
Realistically, it's basically a 2 horse race between Across the Spider-Verse & The Boy and the Heron, but the fact that Nimona managed to get a nomination is a win in and of itself! |

Db: It's not Miyazaki's last movie.

Honest take, actually. I do think that Miyazaki's body of work is deserving of recognition, and I'd even happily support him taking a win for that reason alone. But The Boy and the Heron was self-indulgent to the point of open contempt for the audience. A movie that's poorly constructed, poorly written, and openly confusing that's mistaken for a movie with depth is a mistake that the Academy often makes. |

Why Suzume? Outside of the visuals the movie was pretty mediocre. |

Just say you didn't understand it, there's no shame in it. It's a movie with a lot of depth and there are tons of analysis that dissect all its meaning; it's simply a difficult one filled with metaphors that isn't concerned with being accessible or a people-pleaser. It requires knowledge of Miyazaki as a filmmaker and person, his and Ghibli's history and situations and all the themes he cares about. It's a movie that an old creator made because he needed to put out his feelings, not because he had to make some company money. Not that the Oscars are worth anything considering this year's new rules, but The Boy and the Heron deserves to win. I'd also love for Perfect Days to win the international feature award, it's an amazing movie that deserves all the recognition it can possibly get. |
