This Shirobako fanart posted by an animator really sums it up: https://vxtwitter.com/wuokb/status/1724463429686333654

Jeez, that is dark and probably deserves a trigger warning. |

Every studio wants the succes of Kyoani but refuse to do what they do and treat their employees like human beings instead of rags that you wring animation out of and then throw away

Just to clarify, Maruyama isn't just the company's former CEO, he's still MAPPA's chairman.
I pointed this out awhile back in a thread about God knows what because life is moving at a breakneck speed at this point. Lol |

FYI M2 is working from at least 2017, not "recently"

I've said it before, and I'll keep saying it. The problems going on in anime eerily mirrors that of the VFX industry, and MAPPA is very clearly the anime studio equivalent to Technicolor and their scummy practices towards their artists.
The whole system's a mess, and the more people enable it, whether they realize it or not, the worse it's only going to get. We've seen studios close and animators drop dead from overworking themselves. If anything, the problem here is that the people running the studios are usually too blind or uncaring enough to actually realize the issues at hand (and those that try to be more welcoming or treat their employees better than usual, are usually unable to do much about it themselves because of the poor state the industry's in), and production companies like Aniplex, Netflix (which is its own can of worms in general, but that's besides the point), Kodensha, the various broadcasters and the like are as much to blame as the animation studios for forcing them to churn out as much content as possible. A lot of which is poorly received if it's not just ignored outright. Again, supply doesn't always equal demand. For every popular title like SpyXFamily, Mob Psycho, or even JJK, or every well-regarded, if somewhat overlooked title; there's a bunch of mediocre light novel adaptations, half-baked Isekai fantasies or pure and utter crap out there that under normal circumstances would never get made to begin with. |

The series looks fine for what it's trying to achieve and I am quite sure that if I was 14 this would be the greatest anime ever.
BUT, I am not 14 anymore and besides all the narrative problems JJK (I am quite frankly about to drop it) has, we have to add the fact that I appreciate fluid animation more nowadays. I have seen simple fluid and perfectly timed walking in Apothecary Diaries or Frieren which left me saying "Wow", JJK is jet to make me do that. When sakuga kicks there is simply to much visual noise, I will take Fern's perfect, calm and fluid side stepping to avoid attacks over anything that I have seen this season of JJK. Remember Deku vs Bakugo? That BS super fluid turn and heel kick Deku does its still peak animation for me, JJK will make 5-10 attacks in the time it took Deku do that kick but, it will have 1/10th of the weight and impact, it might look cool but it's just visual noise and will be forgotten since we are getting too much data in such short time. From my point of view, Mappa its wasting too many resources to achieve not worthy results. |

It also seems that Maruyama tried to force MAPPA into prominence way too fast, forgetting how long it took Madhouse to get its own reputation. Madhouse had done co-productions for around ten years before they did their first standalone production (specifically the film adaptation of Unico) and it wasn't until the late eighties that they did their first standalone TV show (the adaptation of Urasawa's Yawara). It took them a long time to get their reputation as one of the best in the business. Same thing with KyoAni which was founded in the 80s, but didn't take on their first principal production until 2003. What did he expect would happen? This is a dude with decades of experience in the industry and he's doing crap like this.
Altogether, even with the larger conversation around the industry itself, MAPPA needs to knock this off. It's good to have ambitions, but not when it's about how your studio is such a meat grinder. |

First, wtf is TWIA? I can’t figure it out or find the answer on Google.
MAPPA forcing such abusive, corrupt, and inhumane working conditions, expectations, and practices on the animators is absolutely disgusting and unacceptable. The executives should be fired and replaced immediately. The Japanese government needs to intervene and hold studios and executives accountable to make life better for all animators at every company. It’s interesting Japan has severe laws regarding defamation. I would argue since anime is a global phenomenon with Japan the primary source of industry, abhorrent treatment of animators by the likes of MAPPA is absolutely of the public’s interest, not only at home but also abroad. What happens when Japan loses too many animators to neighboring countries who are upping their anime production because these people can’t deal with this awful treatment anymore? What happens to Japan’s and these companies livelihood then? Also, JJK season 2 was bursting at the production seems much earlier than the Shibiya Incident arc. The shower scene where Geto looks like the Hunchback of Notre Dame until the last scene is a stark difference from season one’s incredible visuals (yes there were still some issues but it was much better than season two imo). Incidentally, this scene and others were not corrected prior to the BD releases, so don’t have too high expectations for the remaining releases. I’m sure it’s not possible for corrections when all (or almost all) the animators are being pulled to help finish a single episode because of the schedule. I wish there was more we as fans could do not only to show our appreciation but also to improve conditions for the animators. I appreciate the recommendations listed above. My heart goes out to the animators and I really hope things change for the better very soon. |

Now you're just confusing your own personal grievances with certain stylistic approaches of HI with actual objective problems resulting of the schedule. There was no "bursting at the production" anywhere in there, Geto looking like was the entire point, not a result of poor production. In fact, Premature Death is one of the best looking in the episodes in the series in general, in large part to Souta Yamazaki and Takuya Niinuma's drawing power. |

You should go back and rewatch the shower scene. In no way possible would any respectable animator purposefully want the first two shots of Geto’s backside facing the audience to look so deformed. Especially when these two shots were anime only. The third shot of Geto’s backside looks extremely excellent and close to the manga panel. |

I agree; I'd also wager that Otsuka Manabu (and likely Maruyama) are trying to pursue Legacy within their lifetimes - to be known as the CEO and founder who brought MAPPA to acclaim and glory within their tenured and lifetimes to match Kyoani, no matter the cost. |

And not just that, Moe Toyota said they're dubbing the season with completed footage. KyoAni were also sitting on Tsurune and Dragon Maid's completed second seasons prior to airing as well |
