Takes Off is so, so much more than it could have been, and is infinitely the better for it.
Much like HBO's Watchmen limited series, it retroactively makes the source material even better when combined with it.

Fandoms take everything as hostility. They are the apex of the vortex of dipshittery.

I’m not torn on them going on a new direction, but rather torn on them not telling people in advance that it was a Ramona focused spinoff because the author went through a pretty nasty divorce and is clearly using this to re-examine a lot of his past work and his feelings over said divorce can definitely be seen as disingenuous. Especially when this is a year removed from a Masters of the Universe series that did the same thing with no real warning that He-Man would spend most of it sidelined in favor of a very unlikable Teela. (And for those of you wondering, it wasn’t responsible for a film adaptation of Masters being canceled by Netflix to end up on Amazon, it was because Netflix refused to commit to the proposed budge while Amazon is buying up a massive IP war chest).
The problem is…the show feels like it needed that shock value to justify its existence and that it’s an alternate take/sequel to the original work, even if people wanted a straight adaptation. Scott was always about self-reflection from admittedly pretty terrible people who learn to be less terrible, and that the way they get to those realizations is never through gentle persuasion. So in a case like that, it feels necessary. I just wish it wasn’t right after a far worse show that pulled the same stunt.

All impact, and driving force of the show, would be completely, utterly, and absolutely lost if they advertised that. It would literally kill the point of the show. That's nothing to say of Episode 4. ALL point of "Whatever" would be drip-dry drained if you knew that going into it.
Imagine if Nier Automata's advertising told you that 2B dies less than halfway through the game. Not only would it be a supremely shitty thing to do, it would butcher any narrative impact as well.
But, if you REALLY want to get into it though...the show DOES tell it to you. Right in front of your face, in the title. Scott Pilgrim, Takes Off. It's even more blatant than, say, Bravely Default: Flying Fairy.

Everyone pointed to the Sonic conversation (two wildly different works with the same casts and characters) as setting the tone as well.
Like I said, I think you had to, I just wish Kevin Smith hadn’t poisoned the proverbial well because if it wasn’t for that Masters show, I think people would have gone in with more of an open mind. This is also where releasing it all at once is a big help admittedly, people get to take it all in, get context, and not have a more knee jerk reaction.

“Fans” are weird to hate this. I’m only halfway through Rebuild of Scott Pilgrim and I’m just head over heels in lesbians with it already

I was just hoping it was an adaption of the comic since I never read it so I stopped watching it since it expect you to know everything already and I didn't. Wouldn't have watched it if I had known it was one of 'those' fake-out sequel adaptions like FF7R

For me at least, it's the fact that the creator is writing it. All the characters feel as "scott pilgrim" as they should. Hell, there is no way a committee is going to put a Bubblegum Crisis reference in the show like Takes off did. This feels much better than someone else completely re-writing the story they did not create in the first place. That's my opinion at least.

Thats's not the same thing at all Nier Automata is the original story and source material. Spoiling who dies or not in the original material or marketing is of course a weird thing to do. This was an adaption of an existing work. If you adapt something then pull a bait and switch like He-Man or Scott Pilgrim then yeah, it's kinda lame since people went into it expecting something else.
As a fan of Higurashi Gou and FF7 Remake I'm not necessarily against these kinds of things, but the thing with this cartoon was the comic never got an adaption in the first place and people were excited to finally get one, and also it felt a little.. I dunno, intentionally retcon-y? Just seems like a stark contrast from stuff like the video game where they throw in Kim x Knives kissing and have them together in the ending because fans wanted it but in this they seem to be walking that back in an attempt to sanitize the series overall.
Also man, we're really never seeing Lisa outside that one Adult Swim short, are we?

The show was fine.
The only thing im not looking forward to is another generation of girls basing their whole personality after Ramona Flowers.
The last generation still hasn't recovered from the influx of the Wright movie.

The marketing didn't really help, even if it was purposeful to make people check it out in the first place, the OP feels like a constant lie.
It's not that the show doesn't still feel like Scott Pilgrim, and I respect that O'Malley wanted to do something different rather than just do the main story again just in animated form...yet at the same time I feel like the show only really works if you come at it having already read the original comic (especially when it comes to getting invested in Scott and Ramona's relationship) and get what it's trying to react to by doing something different.
And on some level it's just disappointing that a property tailor-made for an animated adaption ended up going in a completely different direction so you lose out on seeing a lot of great stuff animated that wasn't in the movie or a more faithful interpretation of the story than the movie did.

What does this even mean beyond vague sexism?

Aoi Koga Knives sounds incredibly powerful. Same with Tomokazu Seki Gideon.
Fuuka is a truckwreck and it's a damn shame that the anime didn't go through with its most infamous twist.

Knowledge of just the film is enough to keep up with it. In fact, the series even references a couple of things that weren't in the comic.

I mean that was almost a decade ago. I've followed both of them and have never heard anything specific, bad or good, about the situation, so I'm not sure where you're pulling that from?

When the series finished in 2010, I was around the same age as most of the cast, so it's always had a special place in my heart, even if I'm not as into the whole thing like I was back then. So the trailer got me a bit excited, seeing the scenes play out in animated form as they did in my head while reading. I found out it was more of a Higurashi Gou situation only by chance of checking out the episode list on wikipedia and seeing that it is, in fact, a very different approach to the series. So now I'm just kind of on the fence about even bothering. I'm glad it looks good and folks are enjoying it.
EDIT: Just amending this as I did end up watching the first two episodes late last night and freaking love it so far. A clip of Kim and Knives playing music together wound up in my YT algorithm and that scene was enough to convince me to give it a shot.

After all the atrocious amounts of money they’ve been spending on some of the series they’ve been producing with none of that being earned back.
This is a bold strategy to say the least
Quote: | Meanwhile, suppose it's not well-considered, or you don't properly communicate its motivation. In that case, you get stuff like the infamous 2nd season of The Promise Neverland, a bag so fumbled that people don't even talk about the manga anymore because they're too busy being angry at the anime. |
Weird I thought people do talk about the manga in addition to the anime while pretending that only 1 season of the anime was ever made….at least around these parts.

If that’s the case why not just watch the movie?
As eventhough it did make some changes from the source material including adding an alternate ending. It’s mostly the same story and plot beats. On some level people do need to get out of expecting adaptations or remakes of works they like (or have an interest in). In being a 1:1 adaptation of the source material especially if it was already adapted once before.
