Assisted suicide is legal in my country. If his parents wanted it, why is it a problem?

Because the whole reason that they considered suicide was HIS behaviour which shamed them.

Seriously? Because there's only the son's word that they "wanted" to die at all, let alone the fact that assisted suicide isn't "feeding people a shit-ton of pills unsupervised at home". Confused

Earlier voice actor was also arrested for the same reason. Is it a tradition in Japan, I wonder?

People trying to kill themselves because they got in trouble with the law or had their reputation ruined and want to avoid the consequences is not a thing exclusive to Japan.

There is a tradition of this in Japan (i.e. seppuku).
You are correct that it is something that happens all over the world, but Japan does indeed have a history of committing suicide due to shame/to try and protect honour.

For the people looking at this as just assisted suicide, we have to look at the whole situation. He was accused of a number of crimes. Whether they are true or not is unknown but the shame that would come from the allegations could ruin his career. It appears to be an attempted family suicide (if his telling is to be believed), which means his crimes shamed the entire family, not just him. So this appears to be a different case to just "guy commits suicide to avoid getting jail time" or "parents are sick and son assists with euthanasia".

Sad. From the summary it seemed like the son forced or encouraged his parents to commit suicide (ie: belittling them— that’s where my mind went) but after reading the whole thing it sounded more like a suicide pact and he was the only one to survive. Either way it’s a sad situation all around and we’ll never know what truly happened that day.

Also keep in mind that this is a heavily traditional kabuki family and the man is using an inherited name. There's a LOT of shame involved here for a lot of people.
