Basically with the files, all you need is a 3D printer and you can create Gundam models that haven't even released yet entirely for free. I don't condone piracy or anything nor do I have the patience to build models most of the time, but this story is freaking hilarious!

Has anyone deciphered what the VR component of this is, that the articles have mentioned? I don't know if it's a reading comprehension thing on my part, or if they're light on details because it's still a ways off.

The reviews on the Gundam Metaverse Project are bad, with constant crashing in some areas being quite the issue and the system requirements are very high for what it is, like worse than a good number of AAA games being released this year.

Someone is getting fired, sued, or possibly beheaded. Of course this was going to be a trashfire, but at least it's a hilarious one. The whole Metaverse thing has been a complete blackhole for businesses and the sooner they move on, the better.

We got Gundam Build Metaverse out of it. So it's wasn't a total waste.

I don't think 3D printers are really good enough to substitute actual figures. I've bought a few 3D printed accessories and upgrade kits for figures before and, well, while some are passable, it's still obviously different from molded plastic with the grain and fairly brittle material. Fine for a gun or sword, but maybe not joints and other stuff. Maybe technology will improve eventually, but I doubt pirating figures is going to compare to the way other things get pirated any time soon.

It continues to baffle me that they're this out of touch. There's a VR company in Japan called Hikky that multiple times a year, holds various VR expos and they've been getting more elaborate/advanced/impressive each season - the Gundam folks could have literally just tossed the license over to them and had them make a really competent virtual mall for Gundam, yet Bamco had to do this on their own time so they could brag that the company had a metaverse presence/app.
Is this why we don't get good/proper Gundam games anymore? They're afraid we'll rip the 3D models? I get that some of the data that was mined was for kits that aren't even out yet, but if I really want to 3D print a Gundam I have like a decade+ of PS2 stuff that is going to be infinitely more nostalgic to me than some throwaway G-Witch background MS or Build Meta chimera that I have no interest in sitting on my shelf.
The wild thing is, if you're in any way an enthusiast about this stuff and have seen Adam Savage build the RX78 or are learned up on the quality of the plastic they put into this, it's highly clear & obvious that 3D printing this stuff is in no way going to churn out anything of quality. I just can't even.... So help me, if Bamco's logo is on something, wait for it to hit 80% off or there's a good chance you're wasting your time and money. Ask the Gundam Evo players how much bang they got for their buck.
