Well, with those price raises surely you can pay what the guilds are asking for. Right?

They were going to get everything and more but the union decided to add one more clause without warning to benefit themselves directly, so it fell trough.
No offense but at this point the union itself is what is holding these strikes to let and frankly they are getting a little too demanding a greedy. |

I don't follow the union strike stuff at all, but rising prices are just going to hurt everyone in the long run.

Well, SAG-AFTRA decided last minute that they wanted a price hike for subscriptions (about 50 cents to a dollar) and that money would go directly to the union. I can see why the companies aren't that willing to negotiate. |

Most actors in SAG don't make enough to qualify for health care. Asking for a livable wage is not greedy when your employer is a billionaire. This strike is pushing 100 days and the AMPTP is the only one to blame.
SAG didn't ask for a price hike. The AMPTP rejected SAGs proposal for a 1% revenue share. SAQ countered with a per-subscriber model as an alternative proposal, which AMPTP also rejected. Even if SAG was asking for a price increase, which they aren't, this is more than 5x the $.57 per-subscriber amount they were asking for. |

This is just Netflix raising prices to pay their executives and shareholders more, then blaming the unions.

The anime and Asian live-action stuff is on the rather lean side for Netflix, so I'm fine with letting it go if the prices go up.

Yeah heard about this yesterday via newsletters from Variety, Deadline Hollywood, and The Hollywood Reporter.
I knew this was going to happen at some point. I have a feeling this is going to backfire given the cost of living is also rising, and there's no way you can combat cost of living while having a price hike on streaming. While we're talking about Netflix, when they're raising subscription price, Netflix's "original" content (both 3rd party exclusive, and 1st party contents) are being removed on there, and I believe I mentioned this on another topic on ANN. If Netflix continue to do both of these, I expect more people to unsubcribe from Netflix. |

I hope this pays for Spriggan Season 2 and beyond... But the first season aired outside of Netflix in Japan after a gap, too, so maybe it's not a Netflix-dependent project? I haven't heard anything about it being cancelled or renewed.

I'm expecting that at some point we'll see them say that they are "happy to announce" a deal with the union, while also pointing the finger at the union for a price increase. The question is whether people will see through it. At best, these new increases are anticipatory since they haven't settled on a new deal yet. And even if that is the case, as the post above mentioned, it's more than would be necessary to compensate for SAG's demands. Increased costs aren't a non-factor, but an awful lot of the spikes for anything comes from businesses just plain charging more because they can. |

Most actors are unknown people in a very talents and looks discriminating industry. Bit roles that many do as extras and walk ons until they make it big (a very big hope) is not at all worth more money. Hence the long story of working two or three jobs in Hollywood etc. The rest are millionaires. Do people buy tickets to see Tom Cruise or Joe Nobody? It's the nature of the industry. Any sensible parent would discourage their children from having unrealistic expectations as this is a long known thing that cannot be practically solved just by "more money" which simply means less people hired or non union actors taking advantage of union folly. A guy off the street would be happy with a few bucks just to walk by the camera. Also SAG is sideways asking for a price hike. They know what they are doing. They are just trying to look like the good guys. And it is impressive that somehow they are managing to look the villain against the big studios of all things, the general public mood has been unsympathetic to them. SAG also knows that their method guarantees them money even if the streaming service itself loses money. Studios are aware that this is a nonsense deal, that top Hollywood actor politics are also costing them viewers and tanking box office and putting off general audiences, and hence why they are walking. Bigger pay means you either take on greater risk or bring something valuable to the table. As the top actors of the old celebrity era phase out, the new generation no longer brings star power and instead doubles down on controversy. YouTube and TikTok personalities have more brand power than new Hollywood. Even voice actors are getting up there. Times have changed. Negotiations do not favor the actors guild. And with revenue dropping and losses, studios are going to be more conservative on spending. So even if a new deal is reached for better salaries and benefits, look forward to far less hiring and more layoffs. The guild and unions won't care, they will get their cut. |

Why is it hard for the big-wigs to understand that the more prices you raise, the more customers you lose???
Keep it cheap and you'll get lots of customers and you'd be rolling in the money. Or alternatively, raising your product by few cents (or whatever currency you're in; not big increase by few dollars) until you start to see the dip in the customer population, then roll back a bit and you'd be content with that price while keeping customers they're happy with. |

Considering how the general public has repeatedly shown to be on the unions' side, I'm not worried about obfuscation. In fact, from what I understand Netflix is the one who's been throwing the biggest hissy fit at every opportunity and even producers are getting sick of the AMPTP's antics. |

I get that Crunchyroll has more anime than Netflix, but what would you say is the best streaming service for live-action stuff from Japan? I feel like Netflix is actually pretty good in that department, at least compared to Hulu, Max, etc. |

Unfortunately, there is no definitive option. Viki has some Japanese dramas and films. Also, Hulu is getting more Japanese dramas and anime as well. Especially with the Disney Plus content that gets aired in other territories. As for Max, the only ones I recall were Tokyo Vice and Miss Sherlock. You're right, Netflix does have more in that regard but their main focus seems to be on Korean content. |
