The series just didn't use it premier well. It's basically just "people stand around and talk about movie making" the series. In stories like this, the MC and the ghost usually have contrasting personalities and how they eventually come together to archive a common goal which was something this series didn't do and led to a story without any tension and drama. By the time it finally inject some drama into the story it was already too late.

Tenmaku deserves that bonus chapter IMO.

Astute observation. I agree.

...

I'm surprised Do Retry's last chapter wasn't this week.

After this series' cancellation, I'm done with WSJ manga, with the exception of Ichinose Family as I plan to continue reading that series until it ends. I'll just stick to Shonen Jump+ manga.

For WSJ manga, I'd probably just buy the print copies.

In hindsight, I think that having an actual ghost writer and not really using it was a mistake; Tenmaku could have been a living character and the story wouldn't have changed a little bit, as it was a little "Film Making 101". I agree that the manga needed some tension, drama to catch the readers' attention.
At least they managed to finish the movie, but the mystery of how Tenmaku died, why nobody remembers him, etc. remains.

It's a pity because I was almost sure that Nue's exorcist or Do Retry would be the first to fall.

Nue's exorcist is becoming pretty popular among Japanese readers so I doubt it is going anywhere for awhile at least.

We remain at the mercy of Japan's reader base.

I pretty much always agree with them so it is a win for me. I did grow up there though so maybe that's why.

Just the west.

Shueisha: "We listen to Western readers on Manga Plus for our series"

If that's the case, why is Me & Roboco still serializing and not this? Anything Shueisha says about the foreign readerbase should be taken with a grain of salt. They are so fake.

Do Retry might as well be considered ending at the same time, as it almost certainly ending next week. The only reason it lasted one extra week is that when they do batch cancellations like this one (Fabricant 100 last week, Tenmaku Cinema this week, and Do Retry next week) they typically do them in the order the series came out.

They may listen to Western readers, but the Japanese audience is still the more important one. If something's not popular in Japan, popularity in the West won't save it, and something popular in Japan isn't going to go away for not being popular in the West. Where the Western audience could make a difference is in keeping around series that Shueisha is more uncertain about; if they're choosing between two series to keep around, and one has more of a Western fanbase, that could be a reason to keep that one over the other. If Tenmaku Cinema had been a middling series, a strong Western fanbase might've kept it around, but even a strong Western fanbase isn't enough to keep it with its lackluster sales.

However, Tenmaku Cinema wasn't particularly popular on Mangaplus either. Looking at the series on it listed in order of popularity by views, about 2/3 of the Weekly Shonen Jump series are currently getting more views than it does there. I believe the only series with fewer views are Witch Watch, Ice-Head Gill, Do Retry, The Elusive Samurai, Cipher Academy, and Me & Roboco. Even if we only compare Tenmaku Cinema to the other series of its batch of releases (Kill Blue, Nue's Exorcist, and Do Retry were released in about the same period), it is in third place of those four in terms of views.

1. They do not really care -specially since Manga Plus it's free-, but it helps them for licensing series overseas. Also, Shueisha really prefer us "Westeners" (India, Vietnam, Thailand are among the biggest readers) using a official release than a pirate one.
2. A lot of "Western" readers, like me, do like Me & Roboco [which is quite popular among Japanese young readers, it seems]. And it's even announced a physical release in Spain (I guess France will do soon, as they publish almost everything).

The way I see it. I cannot decide what series are cancelled or will start, but on the other hand, I can read [almost] every WSJ/J+ series legally, for free. It's a boon, not a right.
