Is that enough? The details sound expensive.

What do you mean by "enough"? It's Ghibli’s second highest opening in Japan. And considering that they didn't waste any money on the marketing, the results must be more than pleasing.

Matros: No marketing, but the budget must have been expensive, considering it's been years in development, and Miyazaki isn't in his prime...

That's where your misconception about the anime industry comes from. As confirmed by many industry people, high quality =/= big budget. It's not the same as the video games or movie industry, animation is for better or worse still quite cheap.
The movie had a relatively smallish team hence it took them so long, however Miyazaki is also a perfectionist.

How is the Japanese audience's general consensus on the movie itself, by the way?

I've heard that unlike Isao Takahata, Miyazaki has always brought his Films out on time and under budget.

would've been great if you didn't just suddenly throw up a description of the film. I'd love to have gone in without knowing anything. Didn't expect a NEWS article to spoil it

This is a strange criticism. ANN's format for as long as I can remember is to present the news, then offer a short summary of the media they're talking about and any relevant details, such as production company, released ate, etc. If you wanted to go in completely blind, clicking on and reading an article about it seems like a bad practice in general - especially when the headline gives all the pertinent information you seem to have wanted?

Most liked it, some found it to be too much, a lot of people were confused, and then there is a vocal minority that hated it lol. But the overall perception seems to be mostly positive.

I don't know the source, just found this pic on internet

Seems pretty mixed but I believe in Miyazaki's charm

That's from Yahoo! Japan.

You can say it's (together with eiga.com) Japan's equivalent to IMDB. Probably even worse.

With the ghibli movies I have seen, I've enjoyed almost all of them. Movies that make you think and appreciate life.

However I wish they didn't change the title here. I assumed at first Miyazaki was trying to make an artistic point with the title. But even so, even if it was based on a book.

Why did they change title for the US release?

I assumed with a movie called "How Do You Live?" Miyazaki was trying to make a point of his artistic message: appreciate life, be kind, etc on his way to retirement. I mean you can see this in every movie he has directed.

But yeah. Wish they kept the title the same worldwide.

I don't *think* they're gonna edit it, but I *hope* it's not them getting soft on Warriors of the Wind-type edits in their old age...

Wow, you’re incredibly pessimistic about this, aren’t you?
