So, I take it the music didn't get an A, because of that chicken-shit Chariots omission?

I cannot wait for the UK release of this by ATA as it's been one of my favourite anime for something like 20 years.

The review was definitely right about episode 6, that is a bit of a roller coaster and has some of the best scenes from any anime I've seen.

Really glad that they got a dub done, and even more that it's by all accounts a very well done one.

Did Discotek explain why the audio commentary was left off the release at the last minute? It’s even still listed in the credits at the end of the disc.

You can be sure than anything omitted from this release was because Discotek couldn't get clearance for it from the licensor. Gunbuster took a long time to arrive - including having its release date pushed back - presumably because the licensor was being especially strict about its contents.

Someone will have to explain the Aim for the Ace connection to me, because as someone who basically went backwards in anime history (found Utena, stumbled onto Rose of Versailles, tracked that all the easy back to Aim for the Ace and missed Gunbusters completely) I feel I’ve got a serious missing link here.

No, why would they make an alteration to such an iconic part of the final episode?

A lot of the characters, situations, and relationships are lifted straight from Aim for the Ace:
-[Protagonist] was only average at [activity], and looked up to [senpai].
- A new coach comes along and elevates [protagonist] based on potential, rather than current skill.
-[Protagonist] faces bullying, especially from [rival who everyone assumed would have been selected].
-[Senpai] worries that [protagonist] isn't ready and will drag her down, voices objection to [coach], but [coach] refuses to change his mind
-[Protagonist] struggles with own feelings of inadequacy, damaged relationship with [senpai]
-Eventually, [protagonist] grows into potential and rises to the challenge
-However, she also loses connection to [best friend]

There's a lot of other little touches that strengthen the connection, like Gunbuster's first episode and a half being framed like a sports series

It would be interesting to know why the licensor wouldn't ok the commentary or the old science lessons for this release. It's such a shame to see such an important series get a release missing extras from all the previous Japanese & English releases...

The so-called “Gainax pose” – the protagonist standing tall, determined expression, arms crossed over their chest – comes straight from Noriko herself.

It actually comes from the climax of the Getter Robo G manga, but the number of people who read that is much smaller than the number of people who watched Gunbuster.

No reason it would be. The final episode being done mostly in black-and-white was an artistic choice, not a budgetary issue. (According to the booklet which came with the 2007 Bandai release, it was done that way to narrow the focus to the "immensity of ideas" from sci-fi storytelling on display in the final episode.)

Anyway, always felt that the lack of an English dub was a glaring omission from the 2007 release, so I am eager to see how the series plays with it. The price is plenty cheap enough to warrant a double-dip.

Bandai Visual had a big stick up their butts about being too snobby to make dubs. "We know anime fan wants" indeed.

The extras are a bit sparse: creditless openings and closings and the original Japanese promos.

So the Science extras were cut too? :/

The Science extras were included with the episodes, so I didn't really think of them as "extra" in the same way. Sorry for the confusion!

If you watch the show in one go, the science lessons show up after the episode they're associated with.
