If we're gonna talk about American box office gross for anime films, one wonders if any will ever dethrone Pokemon: The First Movie.

Given inflation- I doubt any anime move ever will. Not even Pokémon can dethrone itself The closest was Demon Slayer and that only earned a fraction of what Pokémon did in the 90s (in the US).

The theatre we went to usually has between 4-10 people for an anime movie, easily 20+ for Suzume last night.

I went to the Thursday evening opening. There were maybe a dozen people in the theater.

I imagine a similar trajectory to Air, critical darling but low returns and a second life on streaming.

Saw it last night on IMAX Laser. Theater was 3/4 full at 10:30pm and the previous showing was full. Seeing it on IMAX definitely got people out for it. And the movie really popped on the IMAX screen. I'm now spoiled and want to see all anime films on IMAX now.

It's trending around $5 million weekend. Just ok, not doing gangbusters like action anime domestic, or East Asian countries. Maybe not many people know about the movie compared to based on TV series
Or the story is a little bit more unbelievable than previous Shinkai films, that high school girl falling in love so easily on a grad student is more like a first crush, or how the adults act like naive teenagers, or who released the 2nd cat guardian

Aenurysol: It's doing better than Belle. it might have had a better shot, if Sony wasn't cannibalizing it with The Pope's Exorcist.

Saw the film last night and tbh, I enjoyed it a lot more than Weathering With You.
My criticisms mainly boil down to some of the third act stuff not completely coming together and I maintain the romance wasn't necessary, even if it was understandably more one-sided on Suzume's part. You could still pull off the same emotional beats with it being platonic and the seemingly out of nowhere "I love you's" felt tacked on, but that's pretty much it? Everything else I was on board with! How the film kicked into high gear pretty quick, the road-trip format with people across Japan (but primarily women) helping Suzume along the way, some stellar action scenes, etc...
While the inspiration was pretty easy to see early on, I'll be honest that I didn't really expect it to be so overt when they revealed the exact 3/11 date in the notebook. I think for some international audiences, if you weren't aware of the event prior (a couple people in my group weren't until afterwards), it was still broad enough up until that point that you could associate it with major disasters in general. But especially for those who have experienced one, or are living in an area prone to them and live with the still-visible loss it leaves behind. Like the amusement park segment immediately reminded me of how there is still a rundown, abandoned Six Flags that hasn't been torn down after Katrina because it's too expensive despite the residents asking for it year after year.

Aww none of my local IMAX theaters are screening Suzume.
